The thing that sets Eva apart from most anime is the fact that Eva doesn’t have any “heroes”. Every chactacter is flawed, and stays that way. A veiwer needs to try to understand a chacter before they can sympathise with that character. It is a very pessistic view of the human psyche.
Eva wasn’t meant to have a happy ending. From what I understand, Anno made the movies out of spite, because people were complaining.

Frankly, Kumiko has never heard anyone call the TV ending of Eva “uplifting”…… Japanese fans were throwing their LDs out the window… and she knows people over here who liked the show until the ending… even though Anno-san wanted that ending… and did not want to do movies or anything else (but money talks, ne? )
… of course, Eva is not Kumiko’s idea of a good example of anime to be popular, either… she’d prefer if ADV had promoted Blue Seed like they did Eva, as it is a better type of story to represent anime, she thinks… (no offense to anyone who’s a big Eva fan or anything, ne?)
