Everytime you do a "mandatory" mission, you are around 15-20% more into the game....

Guess i AM the only one that ready the manual (no offence) and so i dont ruin it for any other people who dont have the game yet. Pages 10-13 have some helpful hints to the questions you asked...
as for fastfoward, you can hold Tab. i dont recommend holding it though tough battles though, or where theres lots of enemies

None taken, although I actually did read the manual.
Put it down to stupidity. Instead of TAB I was using the shift key (which fast-forwards dialogue but not character movement). After years of using a keyboard please don't ask how I managed to mix them up ^_^;;;
