Heart de Roomate Quickie review

Or those killer clowns from outer space

Unusual for it to be me who brings a thread back to topic , but I will in this case because I’ve just started playing the game I’ve not finished a playthrough yet (I’m on about chapter 8 or 9), but I just wanted to say based on what I’ve seen so far: Asumi all the way!! Admittedly her character design visually is just my type (certainly more than Tomoe or the intriguing Marutan), and I do tend to have a soft spot for the Asuka Langley style of bossy self-obsessed girls. Especially when they finally start to show a slight hint of vulnerability…

There are three other things about this game that strike me so far as worth commenting on:

* The music (just does an excellent job of fitting the feeling of the times it’s played).

* The comedy is very impressive - I don’t think there’s been a game that’s made me laugh out loud so much for quite a long time.

* And finally, the choices, the decisions you have to make. I’m impressed. In the most part these really aren’t obvious which choice you “should” make. Is it better for Asumi’s route to do what she wants or to stand up to her? Should I tell the teacher what’s going on or try to hide it? It’s often not clear what the best choice is - but in a good way, not a stupid TCI-style “mountain versus lake determines which girl likes you” way. In my opinion this is the way ren’ai game choices should be: obviously significant and relevant decisions, but not always clear-cut which way is best.

I’m looking forward to next weekend, probably the next time I can play it some more…

Now you have me thinking about that "Tripping the Rift" show. Man that was odd...

Hmm, maybe chronoluminaire-san should write a review instead. I had a slightly different take on some of those points. Besides, I'm not sure I can get a review out before I start getting distracted but Bunny 2...

Hey stop trying to pass the buck…that’s my job Well Ekylo you still got this week to finish up the review that’s plenty of time for a skilled writer like yourself.

I somehow feel that this review is the new running gag of this forum...

Well, it's sort of been awhile since we put together a new gag...

Actually, I did put an outline together, need to just write the thing up. Unless I get struck by lightning this week. (It's been a really bad week for me so far so I wouldn't be surprised...)

Yeah we been running outta gags lately And the vampire lemons aren’t appearing as often now either

See my prodding is paying off Ekylo actually did something

Right, but on the downside this would very quickly kill the running-gag...

That depends. I mean, I never did finish writing that review for Critical Point. (Besides, he'll just start bugging me to write a review for another title...)

If I do keep bugging you I’m going to start demanding payment from Peter

Fine by me. Though I wouldn't be suprised if he ends up asking Spec-san to sic a lemon on you...

Hah I’m not afraid of Spec no more, he’s hardly ever here Hey instead of posting get back to writing dammit, how else can I convince Peter that he shoul give me review copies of games

Heh, I know. I finally got past him in posts and I didn't think I'd ever get to that point. And actually, I might finish a review on Bunny 2 first. I've already got a general idea on how I want to write that one.

Well get to work, I’m thinking up payment options peter can use to pay me

So I just got done playing chapter 18, and I’m thinking to myself …

They’ve only got 3 hours before the meteor destroys the earth? No problem. All you have to do is find some bodybuilder to dye his hair yellow and stand around screaming. It will make those 3 hours stretch out for a good 20 episodes or so.

Rofl heh I think you’ve been watching a certain anime too much

That was a hilarious chapter in roomate, came outta no where

Roommate was full of hilarious chapters. Not so great for replay since morst of them don’t change much, but for a first playthru there are some utterly inspired moments. The recap episode and the Naze Nani HatoRoo! Had me in stitches

Actually, I think I have watched it too much; my roommate one year liked it. I happened to be watching probably the most interesting part (the Frieza fight) where it does in fact turn into 5 minutes that takes like 10 episodes.

I haven't watched ANY of the show in like 4 years, but 5 minutes -> 10 episodes is kind of ... obvious and you tend not to forget things like that.

Hah it happens all the time in that series, but to make up for it they’ll go 3 years in a span 2 minutes

obvious spoiler rambling

Having so far done Tomoe, Yoshiko, and Marumu (in that order) I find myself alternately pleased and pouting all the time - not really annoyed, just a little let down sometimes. I definitely like this more than other games I’ve bought.

Tomoe - Adorable, but the romance felt so “h-game cliche” that I kept rolling my eyes. (Things like “Wow, our first date - Instant sex!” or the constant “No, no, don’t look at me…” blushing silliness (but no embarassment at all about blowjobs? Weird girl. )

Marumu - Reminded me of Guu straight from the start, and was quite a surprise to find out that there was a reason behind her behavior and she wasn’t just an alien. I was impressed that the relationship moved slowly (however, this makes the post-Hikaru-sex dialog make a lot less sense than in the Tomoe thread) but sad that in the end the game never really took the time to sit down and work through her problems. I felt that she deserved a long sensitive scene to deal with her developing emotions, and that never happened. (And WHAT did she DO to that cat?)

Haven’t done Asumi or Namiki yet. While I love Asumi’s visual design, violent crazy girls put me off.
