Yup. 
I also found the Eastern European derived school based setting of Gakuen Redux very refreshing and unique. With every second game Japanese game involving a school in some way, it’s a relief not having to read an OELVN work set there as well.
There’s some information about the controversy on Heisei Democracy . It’s a good game as it is, with great art and music, but if light had stuck to their original single route plan, it probably would have turned out a lot better.
I haven’t played nearly enough games to assemble a top 10, or even a top 5 list, but Clannad would be my No. 1 ranked game at the moment.
