Never bought an adult anime video before (Unless ‘GUY: Awakening of the Devil’ counts). My favourite two would be the only two that I have seen (I’m not as much into anime as bishoujo games ):

The first i ever bought was “First Loves vol.2” VHS… why you might ask? cause the store i bought it from didn’t have vol.1 there. The second i bought was “Venus 5 vol.2”… again same reason… Anyway the series i really like was “End of Summer”, “Can Can Bunny”, “New Angel”, “Gloria”… i’ve seen too much, so that’s enough
I think the first hentai anime I saw was Flare: Legend of Lyon. And I swear it was by accident. I was new to anime and I found it in the Action/Adventure section at the local Blockbuster Video store. God, it was horrible.

1)Homeroom Affairs (It counts right)
My favorites are (counting down to my most favorite):
10)Magical Twilight (despite the rape scene in part one)-How Tenchi should have been done. Plus, Chipple is cute and you can't go wrong with sexy witches. :-)
9)Call Me Tonight-The weirdest and funniest take on the tentacle monster anime I've ever seen.
8)Mako-Has Toshihiro Hirano doing the character designs. That's enough for me.
7)Lady Blue-I'm not a big fan of La Blue Girl but Lady Blue gets points for (excuse the pun) fleshing out Miko.
6)End of Summer-Charming and sweet. Nice to see the female characters instigate the sex instead of the males.
5)Escalation-Despite falling apart in part three, a nice little drama about growing up too fast (at least that's what I got out of it, since I don't understand Japanese).
4)Rall-Science fantasy with the cutest lolicon style girls ever and some cool action scenes (the nude sword fight).
3)Astalot-Again cute lolicon lead and she's an elf to boot.
2)Homeroom Affairs-No sex but it has the most beautiful music (namely the piano instrumental of the main theme). Funny and sweet.
1)Pop Chaser-It has THE best animation in an adult anime and the hottest lesbian scene ever.
Well that's all I can think of.
I can’t believe I forgot about Pop Chaser. I loved the way the “last battle” was done. Also, the way the animators stripped the maid at the end was pretty cute.

Kumiko, I have heard that the second(?) OVA for the Maiden series was not brought over, the maid in training was too young for the U.S., maybe this is why after watching the first two, it seemed disjointed, in the first foster is opening up in the next he is cold again. Also both of the videos seemed, to me anyway, to be a bit repetitave after a while. I may buy the DVD and watch all of the video that was translated to see if I get a differant impression on this series. But like you have said Without all the necessary background and "pieces"... people get a bad impression. (so sad...)

Perfect Blue is considered adult anime? I know that it’s got an 18 rating, but I really didn’t think it should have more than a 15 rating at most… It was a really great anime though, I got my parents and brother to watch it (They would normally NEVER watch anime) and they thought it was pretty good too.
Perfect Blue was a mind-trip.
I don’t know why, but Perfect Blue is marketted in the adult section, at least at Right-Stuf. That doesn’t seem right to me.
Yes, there is a “rape” sequence in the middle but it lasts all of a few seconds and doesn’t even really happen. The story doesn’t focus on that event or anything close to it but instead upon the consequences of the heroine leaving the career she always wanted (singing) to go into acting (as pressured by her agents).
Are the issues that it deals with so mature (grown-up) that it needs to be labeled adult (sexually oriented)? Go figure.

The same thing is going to happen with "Night Shift Nurses", Anime Prime said they had to edit it because of a law in three states. The site said that the missing Maiden episode has underage sex in it. I wonder why they even bother at times, since they have to hack up the story to meet cultural standards.
