Any market for U.S.-made Bishoujo games?

Before anybody could answer these question, would you mind to clarify/define first your new-invented terms:

  • bishoujo-esque and its differences to real bishoujo
For example: drawing-style of the CGs, focus of the storylines, set of stereotypes used in characterdesign, …
  • japanese-ness and its typical traits - besides the voice-acting.

For maximum effect, try creating a game of this type. Japanese or not, if you insert never-seen-before, “forbidden” themes which are taboo for Peach Princess and other resellers, you surely will spark interest.
The lack of voices is a serious handicap, however.

About voices:

True Love and Kana Little Sister are two of the most appreciated bishoujo games, and they don’t have voices.

As someone selling anime games, I can tell you that there is definitely a market. Of course, you haven’t asked any questions about the SIZE of that market…

If you are including adult content, your biggest hurdle will be in getting your products to consumers. Standard channels for independently-developed games will not accept adult content. Standard channels for Japanese anime games will not accept works created by Westerners.

This doesn’t make it impossible, but it means that you are going to have to budget for advertising and think carefully about building a customer base. Buyers will not just come to you because you exist.

It seems a bit late for you to be asking these questions now, though. Shouldn’t you have researched your market before starting to make your game? Or if you haven’t begun it yet, how do you know it will be finished within four months?

You might also want to look into producing a game for the Mac rather than the PC. Anime games are in very limited availability on Mac.

Another option would be to look into licensing your game to a large adult site or network rather than selling directly to consumers. This would work best if the game can be streamed in a browser, of course.

Erogames with a good story maybe can survive with no voices, yes, but sex-and-violence romps absolutely need superior graphics and sounds, in my opinion.

A few questions though:
(1) Is there be a market for a U.S. made, non-Japanese fantasy "bishoujo-esque" game, or is "Japanese-ness" an essential ingredient?
(2) What would you like to see in such a game?
(2) How important is voice acting to your enjoyment of Bishoujo games? Would you consider purchasing such a game with no voice, but music?

Voice acting is important...

That said, no voice is better than bad/mediocre voice acting.

Japanese seiyuu seem to be much better at faking orgasms than do American voice actresses.

Japaneseness? Well, since bishojo games are Japanese to start with, Japaneseness is always present. That said, there's nothing wrong with something that isn't Japanese on a cultural level. However, it does add an extra layer of "exotic" to the products, but that's not something I'd advise you try, as faux exotic is often something that backfires, badly, for products.

What would I want?

No lolicon!

Fantasy? What type of fantasy? Swords & Sorcery fantasy or that one with the current line-up of Victoria's Secret models and myself are castaways in a tropical paradise?

Although you've not specified whether this is an adult bishojo game, here's something else I want:

No scat!

If we're talking Swords & Sorcery here, nekkid female elf nookie is a must.

Well, then we shouldn't forget about our lesbian stripping succubi either!

Is it even possible to forget about them? I mean, they're lesbian. They're stripping. And they're succubi. I can't see what's so forgettable about this combination ...

I would love to be able to make my own games. But I neither have the technical nor artistic skills nor the capital to do such. All I can do is come up with ideas.

You mean like her?
Or (not worksafe!)her?
Or perhaps even better (and not worksafe either!): her?

And what do you think of her as an alternative concept?

In D&D manuals there are a lot more non-human races in fantasy worlds other than elfs, catgirls and succubus.

We can add dark-elfs, Half-dragons, dog-girls, mermaids, nimphs, goddesses, halfings, fairies, angels, devils, vampires, undeads, mummys, elementals, etc.

We can add futurist elements to the RPG too. Besides female androids we can include robots, cyborgs and aliens.

Since when did aliens belong to the “futuristic” category?

In RPGs generally the theme is Mid-Age or something like that. And aliens need modern, futuristic spaceships or flying saucers to go to other worlds, right?

They could use magic or something else. Look at Final Fantasy V.

Wouldn’t Silk from Totemo Pheromone qualify as an alien?
