Has anyone on this BBS played the puzzle game Kotobuki, released by C’s Ware under their label Himeya Soft USA? I looked at a lot of reviews for the game and lots of people had complained about how drab the game was. It’s true you don’t need to know the secrets in the game to finish and beat the bosses, but at 2:00 AM in the morning I stumbled upon ‘Kotobuki’ and came to the realization that this is perhaps one of the cleverest puzzle game title I’ve played, a true testimony that there’s more than meets the eye.
Hmm, I havn’t played it yet. From what I understand, the characters from the other C’s Ware are sort of ‘on strike’ in this game and you go in to put an end to it. So I was waiting till I played a few more of the C’S Ware titles before playing it, I’m guessing I would enjoy it more that way.
I’ve played Kotobuki, it was actually the very first bishoujo game that I played (I had no idea that they existed until my friend bought Kotobuki to my house). I have to say that, as a game, it’s okay, not what I would really call a puzzle game, more of an ‘arcade’ style game if that means anything, kinda reminds me of single player Bomberman. Personally, I found the gameplay to be a bit too slow and unresponsive, thankfully, the game had the option to increase the speed, which helped a little, but I also think that it’s much too easy considering that you can just keep continueing from where you’ve left off everytime you lose all of your lives, it’s just like having an infinite lives cheat. What I did really like about the game was the artwork and music, they really got the feel of the game right and many of the characters in the artwork look so much better than they do in their original games, especially the ones like Love Potion and Fatal Relations.
Well, appearances can be deceiving. At first I also thought that it was just a arcade game, and I wondered out loud to myself, ‘where’s the puzzle’? If you read the game manual carefully and take special notice that this is not a billiards game, but billard balls are used, and make the correct setup, then all becomes clear. The game was already a lot of fun for me, but after discovering that secret it became enormously gratifying, and raised the bar for new challenges.
It’s okay, for an arcade game. I didn’t find it particularly addictive but it was rather interesting to see characters from C’s Ware titles like Gloria, Love Potion, Amy’s Fantasies, etc. in arcade mode.
It has lots of daring CGs…
I have a review and some screenshots here:

Hey Bokmeow,
I’ve played Kotobuki, and felt it was a lot of fun. It reminded me a lot of Bomberman. It actually didn’t take me that long to realize how the game played, and, if you read the Help/instructions, it actually goes over the gameplay very well.
It was also funny to see some of the other Cs Ware characters in other situations.
Overall, just a fun little game. No deep story or anything. It had that “oh-I-have-a-quarter-why-not-play-it” type of arcade feel to it.
If you’d like another review of it, I have one up here:

Hmm, I can’t remember when was the last time I used a quarter to play a game. It’s all tokens and “game credit cards” and such now. Even then, it still comes out to something like .50-.60 per play. (And I’m suddenly feeling old for some reason… )
Really? Over here we still just put money coins into arcades to play them… though most cost ¬£0.50 or ¬£1.00 per play ($0.75 and $1.50). They have to be about 5 years old or more over here before they charge less than ¬£0.50 to play.
If I could remember, this is the game where you choose from two characters in the beginning, right? . I always choose Pino . I think this game would be better if it’s game pad compatible .
Sorry for you guys, but down here, it is still one quarter, even the new games! Some arcades are beginning to switch to tokens, but most people frown at it (we use US $ as currency, which are easier to use, at least for us).

Actually, I remember there was some pinball PC game that you had to put in "virtual" quarters before playing.
Sorry, I had spent a lot of time last week with a buddy home for vacation at Dave & Busters. (For those of you who aren't familiar with D&B, it's an 'adult' arcade, meaning video games and alcohol. Nothing like a bunch of drunks playing Dance Dance Revolution...) They use "charge cards", where you get points on the card and then use them to play the games.
It's actually an interesting little psychological trick. It's harder for people to relate the points on the card to money than it would be if they used tokens. Let's say you get 48 points for $10, then play a two games for 3.6 and 4.7 points each, how much did you actually spend to play those two games? It's rather easy to lose track and spend more than you would normally on the games. (Yes, I was bored one day and actually worked on the math of the whole thing once...)
