Article (Time Asia) - Anime Goes Live

One noticeable quote:
"Exactly why remakes of classic cartoons are booming is open to debate. Some cite nostalgia, others a lack of imagination… director, Anno, takes a crankier view. “Japanese people can’t grow up,” he says. “When they’re not reading comics and watching cartoons, they go to see movies about cartoon characters. It’s sad.”

As an longtime anime and manga consumer, I find that quote regretably accurate. Although there are some excellent anime titles, the new releases are generally either idiotically cute or shamefully imitative to early successes.

The Japanese take pride of being one of the most literate society in the industrial world. Indeed the amount of book per capita consumes is amazing. However as people increasingly embrace manga and its derivatives as the mainsay of literature, there will be barriers to limit readers’ pursuit to a more refine form of literary excellence. For one thing, manga has no need to be scrupulous about footnoting, thus leading to blandness and even outright plagurism.

My 2 cents

PHI

I don’t see what’s “sad” about having a hobby. There are pro football players who also play football outside of work, play football video games up to 8 hours a day, and read lots of sports magazines but that’s never considered “sad.” As long as you have a hobby that you enjoy, it’s not “sad.” The only thing that’s truly “sad” is being a person who goes to work, goes home, and goes to bed day after day without any real interest in anything. That’s my 2 cents.

I would consider it that, because the person keeps to one thing and doesn't try to broaden his horizons, have social interaction with people and such.

Who says that the Japanese keep to themselves? The exchange student that from Japan who lived with me wasn’t even a fan of anime. I had a lot of fun with him while he was here. Making such a generalization about a whole country isn’t a good thing to do? Have you ever been to Japan? I have.

Actually, I wasn’t talking about Japan. I was talking about your football player example.

Oh, sorry about that Benoit. Okay, I see what you mean. You think that it’s pathetic if people get too wrapped up in anything, football included. Yes, I agree. I don’t think that it’s fair to sayt that it’s okay to be obsessive with some hobbies but not with others. And there are anime fans are are too obsessive, the kind that hardly leave their rooms. The funny thing is that these kinds of fans are made fun of in anime. Digi Charat, Comic Party, etc. I think it’s funny. Still, there’s a famous quote that fits this conversation pretty well. “No man is a failure who is enjoying life.” I forget who said it though.

It’s not live action, but another thing that’s booming these days is remaking old anime with modern animation quality. Tetsujin 28 and the FANTASTIC NHK remake of Hinotori that just ended last week, are all great. MAN I want that Hinotori on DVD so bad I can taste it.

It's mostly because of all the new members. They don't know how to go off-topic so they start a whole new thread. Amateurs.

It could have been worst. The "thread of insanity" started up during a period I was away. Just trying to catch up in that one thread was nuts...

Then it would be old members' duty to teach new members how to post
correctly, wouldn't it ?
