Astonished that no-one else has taken any notice of this yet. The EGS score pretty much speaks for itself, and at present, it’s currently the highest ranked eroge of 2011. I’ll be grabbing it the second it hits dlsite.
Before I go off into a corner and cry, I really have to wonder how it came to this, because my mind can’t fathom how this sudden decline is possible. This shouldn’t be hard I mean, if Cyc wants to recapture its former glory than all they have to do is take a look at the games that earned them that glory and make more games just like them.
And for those who are interested, the middle chapter of Monmusu Quest has been released. It’s only been out for just over a day, and yet it’s already made it into the top 20 best selling games for 2011 on maniax. As Princess X comes with the benefits of good art + much better seiyuu, all Poison@Berry had to do for the original/fandisc, was copy Monmusu Quest and watch the money roll in. Doesn’t seem like that’s in their plans though.
I guess they’ve started this new branch for low/mid-price nukiges. The artist’s certainly lost some of his skills over the years - this game from 2003 has fairly decent art for the time. Writer worked on Inunaki, so the scenario/text is unlikely to be much better than the art.
Either that, or the artist wasn’t paid enough to give a crap about what he was drawing…
Looks like Cyc is dropping the entire “Cyc” brand altogether. Or it’s possible they realize these games are ruining the legacy of quality old Cyc game had. Meh… whatever… Cyc has been dead to me for a long time now. Looks like they figured out that just because you have an intro with Yui Itsuki/Karen/Fairy Yui, doesn’t make it an instant success.
Tsurumiku (a minor studio from Hobibox) is my bread and butter these days. They’re decently dark and have a semi-balance of plot to keep things going. I’ve been wishing they’d move into supernatural plots – they’ve only stayed with “realistic” settings (i.e. protag and girls are just regular humans) – but I’m satisfied with their offerings for now. Avoid the anime adaptions though… total suckage, primarily because they cut out so much of the story and characters.
I personally recommend Yume Kui and/or HOUND out of their current lineup. Yume has twincest and a girl with emo hair. Yummy.
I’m starting to believe that it’s not that whoever’s in charge of the company doesn’t understand why the old releases were so good; they understand why, but have a deep and seething hatred for the old company and all its fans.
It’s also a good way to cut costs, as while theoretically, an eroge sold for 3000 yen should give you 1/3rd of the value of a full price eroge, in practice, it’s closer to 25%. Well, that’s with normal companies - going by the reviews of Cyc’s previous 3000 yen titles (Mugen Kairou 1.5, Ageha EXTRAVAGANZA etc.) that mention very short playtimes + a relatively low number of CGs, you’re probably getting approximately 1500 yen ‘worth’ of content.
That said, the artwork is very impressive. I wonder why she hasn’t left Cyc yet like all the other core staff, as she’d probably be able to earn more either going freelance or attaching herself to a more profitable company.
All the MiO titles are directly related to each other (same way all BCyc titles take place in the same universe). The plot lines in the previous release indicated there would eventually be another: there were major cliffhangers. While I lament that BCyc is dead, MiO has carried the torch for Otome fans.
If you’re willing to experiment with otome (i.e. see what Japanese girl gamers are into) the MiO collection is good. There’s no hentai, so anyone homophobic won’t need to fear, and the Chinese myth setting has all the appeal of a kung-fu fantasy. I’m NOT an otome gamer, but I found it interesting. Plus the guys are as pretty as any anime girl… except for the whole, being dudes thing. Be aware however, that unlike the old epic Cyc titles, MiO doesn’t obsess with combat. The action and battle sequences aren’t given as much attention or badass-y-ness. They also don’t devote into “Tenchi Solutions” – it wallows in romance triangles, jealous competition, and loooooooong courtships (only one guy is going to win). You know… girly way of love… not the “man ravages girl until she’s only loyal to his cock” kind of thing.
Been playing Hakuoki and liked it so far (though I admit Okita’s route was pretty meh) so maybe I’ll try these out whenever I have e time and some money to spare.
