Bishoujo games/Hentai games

A friend of mine asked me some time before “why shouldn’t I call “games like this” for Hentai-games, since they have have H-scenes in them, right?”. Since I’m not sure about how to answer that question, I decided to seek some wisdom about this among others in this forum. . Well?

Spec,

I think it’s more the fact that “Hentai” carries a different sort of meaning in Japan. And, the Japanese companies call these games “bishoujo.” So, since the game companies call them “bishoujo” (with all that the term entails, i.e. sexuality, nudity, feminintiy, relationships, eroticism, etc.) it’s more accurate to call them this.

Okay as an aside, there are three terms for sexual idea, Etchi, Hentai and Sukebe. Now, what one person might consider Sukebe, another might consider Etchi… so a lot of it’s taste. Because of this, it’s probably more accurate to use bishoujo, since bishoujo ignores this aspect, and more implies the entire idea of a pretty girl.

If you want to see a fairly good set of definitions of such things at Etchi, Hentai, and Sukebe go here:

Um… I hope that’s fairly accurate. I’m sure Kumiko could give a much better answer.

Mike

Ok. Thank you very much

That 's why I prefere calling them bishojo games Kumiko

I’m to use to calling them “hentai games”… Been calling it that for several years now, didn’t really learn what the real name was until i came to this forum…

I was used to call them “H-games”, and since the “H” was the initial for “hentai”, I thought it was all the same…
But now, I know I was wrong and am training to use the right words.

Yeah, you are informing us well enough Kumiko and if I forgot to tell you : arigatou gozaimashita, you are really doing a fine job

You should see how many people call them ‘otaku’ until they find out about the real meaning LOL.

Well, I did. And still do. Personally, I find it as offensive as being called a 'nerd', that is not at all, since it's what I am...
And since every definition of 'otaku' fits as well what I am...
When someone shows me what makes 'non-nerd' people better than nerds (or 'non-otaku' better than 'otaku'), perhaps I'd consider being a otaku computer-nerd may be bad...

Conotation and implied meanings. It's hard to get those things completely right when you're going from language to language.

Well, otaku was fine in Japan for the most part, until the Miyazaki guy (not Hayao Miyazaki of course) was arrested for child abuse and murder. It went into very negative light for many years, but today otaku is once again very accepted in Japan - mainly because people who have grown up with the current pop culture explosion are now working as salarymen or office ladies and such, so being an otaku is no longer associated with the stigma that it had for several years.

Revenge Of The Nerds was hailed as a terrific movie exactly because of what it showed about people... basically, that people are just people, and should be accepted as such.

"Revenge Of The Nerds"??!! What's that? An US movie?

Heh, “Revenge of the Nerds” was an 80’s movie in the US which featured a bunch of college ‘nerds’ who decide not to take it from the ‘jocks’ anymore and fight back. They formed their own fraternity (oddly enough, the fraternity they joined up with was an African-American fraternity and the only African-American they had was gay.) and participated in a competition that allowed them to take over the ‘Greek Council’ from the jock’s fraternity.

This movie along with other’s like “Real Genius” is mainly responsible for forming my very wrong perceptions of college life…

Whoops also forgot to add that like many other movies that ended up being a big success, the concept was then run into the ground with various sequels. (I know they made up to ‘Revenge of the Nerds IV’ but I only saw 3 minutes of that one and never saw #3 at all.)
