Bishoujo review website, seek advice

Hi everyone, posting from the great Taiwan Republic of China, I’m having a good time here, seeing a lot and eating a lot. I’ve started to write my diary and I’m surprised how disciplined I am so far, I finished writing the first day and have already started on the second day. Because internet connection time is somewhat of a premium here because I can’t just walk over to the next corner and have access to a kickass T1 internet connection, updates will be done probably on a weekly basis but it will have a week’s content uploaded all at once. If anyone has questions about Japan or Taiwan they want answered please send them to yeoushiu@eden.rutgers.edu or yeouhsu@princeton.edu, I check both email accounts. My diary is accessible online at:

http://www.eden.rutgers.edu/~yeoushiu/diary

and

http://www.princeton.edu/~yeouhsu/diary

The most significant item that’s been on the new for 3 days straight now is the flight crash of the CI-611 belonging to the troubled China Airlines. This marks the third major flight crash in 8 years, but the airlines has had an extremely poor record in airplane maintenance, procedures and operation, so it comes as no surprise that people are furiously demanding redress.

I will be working hard to provide Japanese parallel text for my diary. Yes, I am a glutton for punishment.

Hmm, does the ‘copyright’ on GIF means if I use that kind of compression format, I have to pay a royalty or declare that I use GIFs on my page?

Going to Japan on 1 June 2002, currently entering 48 hour countdown

Basically yes. That's why I will be changing my images of my site from GIF to PNG soon (as soon as I have some time, that is...).

And for further reading and thought:

Actually there is a small issue with PNGs to be considere and is noted on this page:

It looks as if most of PNG's advanced functions are broken on Netscape and IE for windows, but straight transparency works, making it OK for just replacing static GIFs, even in IE on Windows. You'd want to check your pages in IE to make sure, of course.

As far as I have tested it, transparency does not work on Netscape 4.x (Win32 & Linux). Oh, yes, I do use Netscape 4.7x, and I am pretty sure of at least one user in the BBS that also uses 4.7x.

No, sorry, I haven't tested animations with PNG.

Nice Diary so far, its well written and a interesting read. Keep it up!

Hmm…so you are in taiwan eh?
Get me some doujinshi~~~!!! :stuck_out_tongue:

Letsee…when’s the last time I went to taiwan…at least 15 years ago.
Japan…5 years ago, and I went out of cash at that time so I couldn’t buy as much bishoujo stuff as I wished…

Hopefully I will have time to travel to Taiwan and Japan (and meet up with Peter) for a little trip sometime after I graudate…

Hi, I’m writing right now from the great historical Kanazawa city of Japan, there is lots to do and lots to see, of course there are lots of Anime goods and hello kitties. I want very much to buy some of the limited edition ones, but 4,000 yen is a shock for someone who has a very limited budget. I’m even paying some of the expenses out of my pocket until I get reimbursed, and man does it hurt. Saw Super Real Mahjong PVI and P7, as well as a G-Taste Mahjong game in the Taito Game Station here in Kanazawa. My hosts are very nice, and there’s lots of cultural notes that I will be recording in my diary, so please look forward to them. Because internet access is very expensive, we have limited access to one of five computers. Because we come from outside of Japan, I have even observed some cultural tension, one that I can fully understand since I am quarter Japanese and 3 quarters Taiwanese, and that kind of cultural tension is familiar to one who lives in Taiwan with an oppressive Nationalist in power in the past. Anyways, I will try to update my diary in the next week or so.

Yes, pirating is bad, but it does allow Japanese games to be introduced into a market where there would normally be little or no knowledge of them. I don't fully endorse pirating, but I don't hate it either. Yet, there must be a balance. If people do not pirate, some things would never be known, and great games like Wind -a breath of heart- would never be purchased by overseas buyers. Yet, too much pirating makes companies lose money. There are times when I believe pirating is okay, but I do encourage people to buy a game if they really like it.

Well, that's originally what the idea behind fansubs were. They were a way to get other audiences introduced to stuff and hopefully convince companies in the profitability of translating their product. The problem is, along the way, it became someone else's profit venture, where people are doing fansubs to reap the profits of English versions rather than to help introduce people to the genre and get them to support it. And I dare you to say with a straight face that the majority of pirated material currently out is to "introduce people to new things" rather than personal profit.

In the past, yes, pirated material was pretty much the only way to find out about some material but that really isn't the case anymore. That's why places like this BBS are important in helping to spread the genre. There are several people here who are fluent and do get the games in the original formats and are helping to spread the word about how great certain games are without getting into piracy. They're a great source for opinions on games from a player perspective, also we all share info on sites where games and material can be legitimately purchased.
