Well, ADPCM files are one of the standard types, so it’s unlikely that it’s your system. Probably either some error in the install or somewhere in the game’s setup stuff. Try reinstalling (maybe even just the standard install) and letting the sounds run from the CD.
Hmm, try downloading an ADPCM codec anyway… (google ADPCM and I’m sure you’ll find a zillion choices) although it should already be installed and then you’re back to an issue within the game
Here’s some instructions on how to reinstall and check to make sure it’s enabled under windows:
If the Microsoft ADPCM CODEC is not listed in device manager, install it using the Add New Hardware tool in Control Panel. To do so, follow these steps:
- Click Start, point to Settings, and then click Control Panel.
- Double-click Add New Hardware, click Next, click No, and then click Next.
- Click Sound, video, and game controllers, and then click Next.
- In the Manufacturers box, find Microsoft Audio Codecs.
- In the Models box, click the ADPCM CODEC, click Next and then click Finish
