One thing I'd like to remind all "I-don't have-money-right-now-so-I-pirated-but-I'd-buy when-I-have-the-money": anime, bishoujo games, etc. are NOT
a right. So, if you can't afford them, you have NO right to have them. Watch them/play them at someone's who have them legally or just don't watch/play them. Trying to justify having pirated version in a public BBS is hypocrisy any way.

You confuse legal with ethical. I never claimed that [5th amendment]some things I may or may not have done are not illegal[/5th amendment]. I claim they aren't unethical.

If I buy it and then copy it (for personal use), there's no problem. So if I copy it and then buy it, what's the problem? I get the product, they get the money. Aside from the fact that most people don't actually go out and buy it, which is why it's _illegal_ to do that.

No, I'm not. Perhaps I'm misunderstanding you, Nandemonai-san, but the way I see it, you're using the fact you can't afford them now as a justification of you owning pirated copies. So I was just pointing it was not a valid justification. If my understanding was wrong, please excuse-me.

The copy is legal as a backup of the good you own. So, you have to own the good for it being legal to own the copy. As such, for instance, if you ever sell your good, you can't legally own the copy anymore.

I think one of the problems as a collector, a collector wants to have everything. However funds not being inexhaustable collectors tend to buy what they can and copy the rest. Unfortunately, this hurts companies especially industries that are trying to gain a foothold like bishoujo gaming. Now I’m against piracy but, I wanted to know what people thought about games that are out of print and no longer distributed.

E-bay? Second hand items? It worked for me on one of the Kakyuusei CDs (thanks to Anime Jungle).

I'm a bit ambivilous on this subject. While I'd hate to see the games totally gone and unavailable, a lot of the pirates and download sites are the ones who helped to cause the failure of those ventures in the first place.

But Fxho-san does list the normal alternatives. Like I mentioned in another thread, I had run across some old Jast games at one store and this past weekend I saw a copy of Ring-Out at the swap meet. And while E-bay if full of pirated material, there are occassional valid copies put up like when Bigdog-san did his and I know a "Knights of Xentar" was sold recently. (I think it was a legit copy but I forgot to follow up.)

Well, this isn’t really the place for me to debate the ethics of my practices. Pirates frequent these boards, and it wouldn’t be a good thing to have any sort of topic that might seem to be supporting piracy (which I don’t).

But I think I’d look bad if I didn’t try to explain myself, so–olf_le_fol–if you don’t mind, I’d like to move this discussion to email.
