I just watched a new anime called Excel Saga. I bring it up since in episode 3 or 4 er… I forget which, they poke a few jokes about bishoujo gaming. I thought it was pretty funy.
Oh yeah, episode 4… that was hilarious. Each episode has a theme, and that was a love sim or something similar. It was pretty good.

Excel Saga’s some funny stuff. There’s entire episodes that just aren’t funny (like the Menchi episodes), but when it’s funny, it’s flat out hilarious.
I sponsored several volumes of the Slow as Hell fansubs.
I will get Excel Saga Vol. 1 DVD in Best Buy in New York City soon. It costs $15 as I saw Sunday ad Best Buy did say so.

Couldn't get into Excel Saga for some reason. @_@
I think it was the episode with the bug and the talking cactus, but don't hold me to my shoddy memory~ ^^;

I thought the bit when Menchi escapes into the flooded streets with I think "ode to joy" playing in the background was pretty funny.
Anyone see puni puni poemi? Its a bit farther off topic, but its even more hillarious than excel saga. Technically, its a 2 episode OAV based on Excel Saga, but only keeps a few characters (peticularly Nabeshin and Kumi Kumi, and all the voice actors). They also pull a huge joke about trends in bishoujo games in episode 2. I couldn’t stop laughing.

There were isolated parts to the bad episodes that were funny, but they spent too much time following the structure of what they were trying to make fun of and not enough time making fun.

It's even worse than that. Excel Saga was on a premium channel (which has fewer restrictions) AND it was on at 1 AM. And they STILL couldn't show episode 26 on TV. It was IN.SANE.
My (ex?) anime club showed Excel Saga in its entirety (including 26). Ducked up slit.

There's an edited version? We saw the uncut version. There'd be...what, five minutes of an edited version?
If you guys don’t really care about dubs and just want to watch the whole entire series for a lesser price of the ones that Tokyo-Pop will release, try this website: dscountanimedvd.com .

Yes. I know (albeit tangentially, but I do know) the translator for Excel Saga. Support her work. I'd hate to have to come over there.
Did anyone else notice the jokes in the credits at the end of each episode in the ADV dvd? If so what was your favorite?

Alas, I lack the funds to buy the DVD. Yes, I know this is hypocritical of me when I just told someone else to not buy the pirated versions. I like to think fansubs are ethically superior if not legally so. And I do fully intend to buy the Excel Saga DVDs when I *do* get the money (and anything else I have fansubs of when they DO come out).

I like fansubs when they are used the way they were initially intended, to help generate interest and a market for when an legit translation comes out, and not as a way to get "cheap anime". I first saw Love Hina's fansub, enjoyed it, and now that the DVD's from Bandai have been coming out, I've been picking them up. (Despite not even having a DVD player yet.) People think I'm crazy when I do stuff like that, but I want to support the legitimate enterprises since I'm hoping they'll keep producing more things I like. (Kinda like Peach Princess!)
Saw the Excel Saga DVD today but like many great intelligent things to do, the store put the security tag right over the description on the back so I couldn't read it! I mean, yeah, less chance of it getting stolen with the tag on, but don't you want someone who's interested to be able to read the bloody description?!?

Here's my recommendation: Buy it. Buy it now. Even if you don't like the other episodes on the disc, the first episode of Excel Saga is...how to describe this? Like Kodomo no Omocha on crack. And speed. Lots of both. Well worth the cost of the disc just for the first episode.

*shrugs*
I suppose now is as good a time as any to bring this up. Mostly my entire anime collection is all, uh, fullylegalbackupcopies. I'm a broke ass college student, recently turned broke ass college graduate. My personal attitude is that I view my activities as time shifting: I can't pay for it now, so I'll just get it now and pay later. And I WILL pay later; I'd just be broke, all the time, if I bought anime eps now.
That said, my first principle in this is "do no harm." I saw Peach Princess' site, and hung out on the boards, and realized just how poorly the games sold.
In a sort of interesting twist, I would probably never have bought a single product from Pea Pri if I hadn't already downloaded the CG for Tokimeki Checkin. I figured that since I'd bootlegged it, I ought to buy it. So, of course, I bought Snow Drop :P Then I was hooked.
Well, you’re intention to get legite copies eventually is still more than what most people do. Just remember to do it. And it takes awhile to get one’s budget straightened out. Took me two years after college to get to the point where I can save for a downpayment on a place, pay all my bills, and still have enough to spend on extras like anime and games.
Actually there is a store locally that does something I do like. They have a fansub rental section. And once the licensed product does come out, they immediately remove the fansub version. Also, I think they give you some kind of discount on the legitimate versions rental if you’ve also rented the fansub. (It’s a bit out of my way to rent from there so I forget what exactly they do but my friend rents from there quite often.) Granted, it’s not perfect but it’s still better than places who are always selling fansubs, even after the liscensed translation comes out.
Actually, I am finding that one of the most effective arguments to give to people to purchase the legitimate copies is that keeping companies like PeaPri alive is the best way to see even more English versions of things come out. (Not the best argument, but the most effective one.) Again, I wish that wasn’t so but it is. I think it’s mainly because it then doesn’t become a point of “sticking it to big business” but a self-interest thing, allowing you access to games and anime that you can understand and enjoy further. It’s funny how people are sometimes.
Well, I am a CS major by trade and would-be game industry professional. I feel it behooves me to not adopt a stance that would make me a hypocrite.
And yet, I own 2 VCRs, because a place in my college town rents subbed anime.
I do intend to buy everything, because otherwise I would be a hypocrite. I am the sort of person who would buy Japanese imports that I could neither view nor understand simply because I owned a fansub of a show that never saw domestic release. Or at least, I would if I had the money to burn.
I’ve bought every Peach Princess title that interests me, and some other stuff besides. Because I know they need the sales (remember, they haven’t moved all of Crit Point LE yet). I’ve even pushed the games down the throats of friends of mine. And I support risky business decisions in the more mainstream gaming industry (like Rhapsody, for instance–the musical RPG). Because I can.
I try to refrain myself as much as possible to enter any discussion about piracy but…
One thing I’d like to remind all “I-don’t have-money-right-now-so-I-pirated-but-I’d-buy when-I-have-the-money”: anime, bishoujo games, etc. are NOT a right. So, if you can’t afford them, you have NO right to have them. Watch them/play them at someone’s who have them legally or just don’t watch/play them. Trying to justify having pirated version in a public BBS is hypocrisy any way.
