Finally Played Tokimeki Check-In!

A friend of mine got TCI the other day. I’ve played it a bit on his comp and am borrowing it right now. So far I’ve gotten the best endings for Natsuki, Kumi, Yuki and Mokoto.

All their endings are very sweet but I think I like Makoto’s best. Of course, she was my favortie girl from the get go. She gets the award for girl best able to look cute while performing oral sex.

Kumi was just too sweet not to love and her ending made me smile.

I liked Yuki’s story the best. It had some real heart to it and her VA was just gret.

Natsuki, boy, is she a trip. That first sex scene with her is pretty kinky. It’s also fun how embarresed she is to show off her body. Personality wise she’s really buried teasure.

My buddy isn’t interested in the CP and neither am I. We’re waiting for Bravesoul.

That’s all well and good, Kumiko, but neither of us can really afford to buy games for the sole sake of supporting the Bishoujo industry. We’re poor college students, after all.

But when something we want does come out we will buy it.

Hey Skyrocket,
what about other Tokimeki Check-in stuff?

I mean the T-Shirts are pretty keen (I have one, and it’s fun wearing the cute girls around town), and the collectable cards are pretty swoovy too.

Gave one to my friend for Christmas. He liked the artwork but he got tired of trying to explain who the half-naked girls pictured were. (Gave him the game too but he hasn't done to well in it.)

The shirt’s okay, but on the pricey side. Plus, people on the street would give you some odd looks. It’s not an EVA shirt, y’know.

I don’t know what “violent” EVA shirts you mean.

And before I’d swear I saw those T-shirts listed as being $40. The current $15 is pretty reasonable.

I’ve been playing the game some more and one thing has become clear; whoever was in charge of the English script did some sleeping on the job. I saw one of the characters say “your” instead of “you’re” today. Plus, several instances of doublespacing.

I can tell by the credts that a lot of people who worked on this were donating their time (hooray for them), but still, when I see goofs that could have been caught with a simple spelling and grammar check in Microsoft Word I can’t help but feel let down.

I also have a gripe about the traslation. When I hear a word in the dialoge I tend to get ticked if it doesn’t show up in the translation. I know there’s more than one way to translate something (I have been taking Japanese for 2 years for nothing) but if Yuki says “teribi” I expect to see “TV” in the script. I get mad when I see this happen in anime too.

If PP wants to crack the bigger markets they’re going to have to be a bit more polished than this.

You have to remember that when these games are translated, it’s not likely that Microsoft Word is used, but more likely that a plain text editor or a tool designed specificly for writing the script files and no spell checker would be available.

I have too noticed that some words that are mentioned in the speech are not in the English text; I’ve only learned Japanese for a few weeks on my own. It’s probably because the English version flows better or sounds more natural to us than a fully accurate translation.

If I’m not mistaken, didn’t Final Fantasy 7 have a number of grammatical errors and just plain clunky dialogue? And that certainly didn’t detract from it’s widespread appeal.

Yeah, I know the occasional grammatical error (or frequent in the case of some of the older bishoujo games) can be distracting and annoying (I’m an editor of a scientific journal, so these things tend to make me physically cringe), but you’re likely to find typos and instances of poor grammar in most written media. Almost every novel I read (especially earlier printings) have a dozen or so such mistakes, and books go through various edits and proofs (which games don’t necessarily have the luxury of doing) before they’re printed. The typos and such in PP games, at least in my opinion, are few and minor considering the text-heavy nature of the games.

I can’t comment on any translation errors, however, as English is my only language other than what I remember of three semesters of German I had back in college some four years ago.
