Just wishing everyone a happy Halloween/Samhain or whatever one wants to call it.
Because I need brushing up on my Japanese Culture … does Japan celebrate a similar holiday? For some reason I seem to have recall somewhere that they did, perhaps I’m mistaken though…
Additionally, to go along with the theme, I’m pretty new to Anime as a whole (I said I’ve been playing English Bishoujo games for the last three years… Anime on the other hand I’ve only ever seen two. Lain and Perfect Blue) and was wondering (and again, for most this probably seems like a silly question) are there any horror based Anime or Animes with Horror elements in them.

Now that you mention it, yeppers! Although I never thought of them in terms of Anime before... I knew, from somewhere, that it was/is a popular fantasy aspect...
Now that I'm also thinking about it seems there was one called Bible Black too... Happy Halloween, All Hollows Eve, Samhain, or whichever you prefer to you as well ScorpioMysterica.

Er, yes and no. Samhain, the "Feast of the Dead" definition, probably comes close to Obon. It was a time where the barrier between the living and dead was at it's thinest, and it was possible for ancestors to pay a visit, so you'd put out lanterns to guide them and set a place for them at the table (the "feast" part). Obon is generally about honoring your ancestors and did include the possibility of them paying a visit to you (At least I think that's how the last part goes, it's been awhile). Lanterns again are used to guide the spirits, especially at the end when they use them to guide the ancestors back to their world. (When they put the lanterns in the water and out to sea.)
Halloween, as most Westerners know it, (and without the commercialism) is slightly different. Again with the origins in Samhain, it was believed to be a time of great spirit activity and you would encounter such spirits while about. So you wore masks so that the spirits would believe you were one of them and food and treats would be left outside to appease those spirits so they wouldn't enter.
