Well, Curtis Shaw and I have decided to group up, and attempt to spread the bishoujo gaming news via the review format… amongst other ideas that we’ve tossed around.
Now, I know that a bunch of you were interetsed in helping Peach Princess, and offered to post reviews, thoughts, opinions, etc. to a number of on-line magazines and such. Curtis and I would love to be able to coordinate all this energy into one giant beam. (We also have other ideas as well, but you have to send your interested for us to share those )
However, we cannot be directly associated as that would defeat the purpose
think stuff written under Peapri would look more like advertorial than editorial material, no?
> Generally, whether or not the reviewer “liked it” or “didn’t like it” should not even be mentioned
have to disagree with that. the point of a review is to tell how good or bad a certain product is, so naturally the reviewer has every right to say whether he liked or disliked certain aspects of the game. the catch here is, he must justify whatever he writes. so if he says “I don’t like this” simply because he doesn’t like it, then he should simply keep the remark to himself.
A good review, imo, shouldn’t just explain what a product is, but in the process point out its strengths and weaknesses. of course, if the product sucks big time (and there are many of them out there…and really, it’s hell just to play them, nevermind having to write about them) the review has every right to slam it. but he must justify the things he says. as for how he goes about that, it’s entirely up to his style of writing, I guess.
have to agree with the quality of some of densetsu’s stuff…had difficulty even understanding what some of the reviews were saying…
btw, didn’t realise they’ve got a PC bishoujo gaming section on Gamespot Japan. It’s in Japanese, but for those who are interested, here’s the URL anyways:
--------------------------------------------- KUMIKO WROTE: A good review will inform the consumer as to what the product is, and allow the consumer to make their own, informed buying decision. There is no way that a reviewer can say that one artistic work is “better” than another for any particular consumer out there. From the consumer’s standpoint, they want to know what the product is --------------------------------------------- A review is, according to the Webster dictionary, "a critical evaluation (as of a book or play) " [and a game, in this case ]
There are product overviews, and there are product reviews, and the main difference between the two is that one’s purely factual while the other’s slightly biased. Imaging how movie reviews would be like if every reviewer kept their opinions to themselves. Wouldn’t be worth reading, would it? “You see one, you seethem all”, so to speak. If that’s the case, reviewers would be regurgitating product brochures and the like for a living.
Opinions are fine so long as they’re justified. And the fact that reviews are meant to express the writer/user’s opinion means that no one should jump to buying a product based on one write-up alone. usually, people are advised to read a few reviews, and then decide for themselves whether to buy it or not.
--------------------------------------------- KUMIKO WROTE: As another example… Evangelion is widely available, but Kumiko certainly has no interest whatsoever in spending her meager resources on such a show, in any form. She --------------------------------------------- which is why reviews should be written by those familiar with that kind of product. A flight-sim, for instance, would be best reviewed by a flight-sim afficionado, since it’ll most likely be read by people like him.
Eventually, whether a review is good or bad shouldn’t be judged by whether the writer expressed his opinion in the piece, but rather, how well he goes about doing it.
I look into the future…and foresee another long posting from Kumiko…(^^;

Okay, I think I get the hint that I should start a review site. So, since I already have an anime information site up, and a section about bishoujo games, why not just expand the bishoujo games section?
Anyway, if you have posted a review or some thoughts, please email them to me (of any bishoujo game that’s made it to the States.) I’ll do my best to put them into HTML and post them on the upcoming bishoujo anime review site. And, I’ll post the link to Anipike if nothing else.
Oh, Kumiko, if I do this, would it be okay to link to your products section any games that are reviewed. And, would it be okay if I use a few, small, pics so readers can see what the art is like (following the Fair Useage Laws and all.)
Oh, one last note, do to time for me being at a premium (what with my wedding next week, moving, and applying for my Masters) it might be a few days or even a week or two before I’ll be able to serious work on the bishoujo anime game site. So, please bear with me.
