For the record, Brave Soul isn’t a “Fantasy RPG and H-Game”, it’s a fantasy RPG erogame, that’s all. “Erogame” just means it has “eroscenes” (i.e. sex); it has no incidence on the gameplay (an erogee can be an ADV, AVG, RPG, SIM, card game, puzzle game, whatever) or genre (an erogee can be a romance, a thriller, a fantasy adventure, a horror story, a sexfeast, whatever). Just for FYI.
I just thought I’d point out that companies like Peach Princess don’t actually make these games per se; their job has more to do with such things as translation and modification of programming (i.e. making roman characters appear correctly). That’s why you never see an opening animation/movie with the Peach Princess (or other such company) logo outside of the teasers/trailers that are released. Instead, you see the logo of the original maker, for example Sekilala (???) for the Come See Me Tonight series, Digital Objet (D.O.) for Kana, Crescendo, and Snow Sakura, and r√∫f for Yume Miru Kusuri.
18+ games aren’t released on PS2/PS3/etc. consoles in Japan anyway. Some older consoles historically did allow them (usually as the console itself was dying), but in general it’s a big no-no.
Didn’t I hear something about Peach Princess being in talks with XUSE? They made Eien no Aselia -The Spirit of Eternity Sword- and it’s sequel, Seinarukana -The Spirit of Eternity Sword 2-. The series has a good reputation, so I hope I wasn’t just imagining the news. (I also saw a couple of other XUSE titles that looked good.)
The series is a S-RPG, though, while the OP seems to want a RPG. I’d rather point at the usual suspects: Softhouse Chara, ALICESOFT and Eushully.
As for the Eternity Sword series, I’d say that Eien no Aselia is awesome, Spitan is quite good while Seinarukana is merely good. Of course, a wargamer should add a few points to Spitan and Seinarukana because the respective battle system are so wonderful; the former have been called “too complex” by non-wargamers, though. For my part, I’d say that anyone who thinks that the battle system of Spitan is too complex never tried the Sequence Palladium series from Kogado Studio!
Like Lancer-X said, if you want RPGs Erogames, you should try STUDIO E-GO games - specially the IZUMO and MEN AT WORK series. During 10 years they have released many great RPGs nicely draw with 3D animation. Download some of the trial versions and give a try. Many of their games were ported to console, too.
But unfortunately, there’s little to no chance any of these erogame makers will release any of their games translated someday. The reason is, not only the rights for translate these games must be very expensive, but RPGs in general are very hard to translate and convert their playability to non-japanese PCs.
Sometimes some fansubber groups release translation patches for these games, too. But it takes a loooong time!
The best chance we have is with the erogame makers PEACHPRI and GCOL already have the rights to translate games… like for instance the ZYX’s RAIDY series and the D.O.'s SUMERAGI NO MIKOTACHI. This one looks to be a great ero-RPG i’m looking forward to see translated someday.
I personally think E*Go’s games are just cheesy and not really good (IMO they didn’t release a good RPG since the original Castle Phantasia).
The Baldr series isn’t really a RPG, but rather an ACT.
For punctual games, I kinda liked catwalk’s Maoh to odore, some praised escu:de’s Eikyuu x Maoh and PajamaSoft’s Prism Ark has a good reputation.
But they’re still H-RPG games with 3D animation. Personally, i like E-Go games, but i know not everyone find them funny.
To tell the truth, i think even great H-RPGs have a weak gameplay compared to console RPGs… but that’s something it can’t be helped. After all, bishoujo games are different, focusind more on story and characters than gameplay.
If every HGame maker were spend the $$$$$$$$$ necessary for a great - SQUARESOFT-level - gameplay in their HRPG erogames, they would be broken in no time!
If only there was some way to get financial investors in the eroge market. A pipe dream, I know. Doesn’t make enough profit for that kind of stuff.
On a side note: anyone else around here wondering what’s taking Konami so long with a new “boy side” for Tokimeki Memorial? I know #3 was a failure, but that was due to the 3D treatment and simplified mechanics. TM2 was golden.
Metal Yuuki (original music composer and producer of the main series since TM2, a position he technically still holds) always sidesteps the issue, so I guess it’s a lack of interest on his and the former developers’ part. He keeps joking about how Tokimeki Memorial fans are scary, and that no matter what they make, there are angry, crazy reactions.
If enough developers in Konami were to rally for TM4 (i.e. on a handheld platform), I think development could possibly happen. After all, some female staff kept “Girl’s Side” going, despite meager sales. However, the series probably isn’t popular enough for management to actually mandate sequels or remakes.
Yeah, I get the feeling they never understood what made Tokimeki Memorial popular. The team produced TM3 the same way they might create a mainstream product (focus on flashy but rough new technology over moe appeal, high sales expectations), so they probably aimed for success with a sizable teenage audience.
Calling Konami’s 10th Anniversary celebration half-hearted would be an understatement, so I suspect they have no serious plans for the future.
Unfortunately, i never had the chance.
I think i read in some place a review about how how great this game is. I think i will give a try someday.
It’s from XUSE, right? If i remember well, this maker did other good RPGs.
That would be awesome. Honestly, I think Nintendo DS is the best bet too. Recently Nintendo has been manufacturing 1GB and 2GB data flash storage, so there’s certainly room for full voice acting if they can find a creative means to compress it and/or reduce the audio quality without notice. Square-Enix has been experimenting with that for ASH (2GB) and the FF4 remake (1GB).
The XUse brand making RPGs is ??? and AFAIK, aside from the Eternity Sword series, the only other RPGs are the Pageant series and Ultimate Hunter. Never tried any of the Pageant game but I renounced playing Ultimate Hunter because its battle system sucked.
I could say I’m not a fan of the Eternity Sword series, but, considering I own all 6 of them and played 5 (6th is as soon as I complete TH2AD), you may not believe me.
…and the 7th game is coming and planned to be bought and played~
Nope. The only (remote) possibility along these lines would be now that many former Xuse employees have defected to form the Eternal brand under Will that we could have some talks with them there, but there’s currently nothing in discussion (that I’m aware of, at least).
Not to get too off-topic, the best ero RPG I’ve played is Rance VI from Alice Soft. I think the gameplay there stacks up against the best titles from major console makers (though the budget difference is obviously reflected in the graphics). The game is really worth playing more for the fun gameplay and the story than for the ero, in my opinion.
That said, it doesn’t have much in the way of “dating sim” elements so it may not be what the original poster is looking for.
Actually, studios don’t do AO titles in NA for a simple reason— the best way to have a product be successful is to be able to get it placed on the big box retailer shelves. An AO title would need to be sold like porn mags— so if you want to make AO titles, you are better off with a direct distribution model (Internet sales). But that leads to the problem of how do you get the game buying public turned on to your product in the first place.
Now, if Congress ever gets around to requiring purchasers to show ID for their Teen+ or MA-17 titles, well— all the MA-17 restrictions Congress keeps drafting is the same thing stores would have to do for porn, so at that point, there would be no reason for retailers that sell MA-17 titles to not also sell AO titles. Same restrictions— just MA titles can be sold to 17 year olds, and AO titles would require you to be 18. Not significant difference.
Right now, we just have to keep turning our friends on to the AO games translated by Peach Princess, and let the market keep growing until its big enough and the mainstream is tolerant enough to have it sold in your local stores.
