Japanese manga ruled obscene

http://news.bbc.co.uk/2/hi/asia-pacific/3391951.stm

Intriguing.
I’m sure it was obscene but I’m also sure that lots of other stuff is too.
But now that the precedent has been set, I guess we can expect lots more to follow.

Do we think this will have much impact on the games industry? (Probably won’t affect the market in the West for bishoujo games, H or non-H. I expect this will just affect Japan…)

As the correspondant noted, there is plenty of pornography in Japan that escapes such scrutiny. According to him it wasn’t particularly obscene either
(“Given what’s available it seems an extraordinary decision”).

This is probably little more the government flexing its muscles, vainly attempting to keep things in check. Unfortunately for this poor fellow he’s the one they made an example of.

I can’t get over the wording of “…(which) damages the normal sexual sense of shame of ordinary people…” The normal sexual sense of shame?

Probably an election year for one of the officials It probably won’t affect the industry too much. Maybe the publishers will lay low for a little while until the heat is off.

I am more curious about 'ordinary people'. Maybe it is just what I do and where I spend my time but I don't meet a lot of 'ordinary people' in this world. Those I meet are great people that happen to like anime and manga, however they just about as close to ordinary as a dog is to being a cat.

Another thing that I found interestin was the prase "unnecessarily sexually stimulating". I imagine that was fun to explain what falls into the "unnecessarily" category in order to justify the decision.

It will be interesting to see how this plays out in the appeals court (well Tokyo High Court) though I hope freedom of speech wins out as it should in my opinion.

As Interzone stated, this whole case seems like a warning to publishers and artists that don’t follow the law.

http://www.geocities.com/hgyrl_2000/honeyroom/ <–sample art from the comic HoneyRoom…they did kinda cover stuff LOL

I don’t think it’s going to affect the adult gaming market, simply because they seem to be alot more strict when it comes to the correction of game art.

I’ve never seen an uncensored professionally produced adult game come strait from Japan.
Though I have about 10 or more published comics that are totally uncensored.
I’ve noticed publishers kinda changing the way they do things after this happened though.

Kinda like that Child Protection thing…was that ever passed??? Not sure??
Cause loli is still rampant in comics I notice.

Sounds like RIAA type of thing to me…scare tactic.

In some ways it probably is a scare tactic, but those rarely work as the RIAA is finding out the hard way themselves, if the news reports are to be believed.

As for the Child Protection thing, see maybe I am foolish but I think there is a difference between protecting real children adn trying to 'protect' drawn images of what someone might take to be a child. I know there are people out there . . . but society cannot always be built just in case for those that might do horrible and stupid things. In this cast that would be a person reading whatever they are reading who is a person that is likely to do a dumb thing and, a Child Protection case, possible one of the wrost things against children. However this is another issue entirely.

Asian's have a different standard actually ! Kissing in public is almost never done, so what would you expect on their views about normal sexual sense of shame .
