JAST USA Re-launch Feedback

Figured out the remaining issue.

On the first page of any topic, there’s a really irritating “related threads” box that a) I find completely useless, and b) wastes about a third of the width of the page, compressing all the text into a too-small box. The problem is that the box contains like 5 lines of text, but the layout reserves an entire column for it - even for posts that occur halfway down the page, where there isn’t any content at all in the column for several posts.

Also, it is confusing and annoying to have the first post of the thread be the first post of every page.

The "code" feature as a replacement for forum quotes is less than satisfying. You have to horizontal scroll to see it. If you've ever tried web browsing with a horizontal scroll bar, you'd realize this gets old quick.

Also, the page list needs to be on both the top and bottom of each topic. It's annoying having to scroll back to the bottom of the first page to review a post after I've posted.

@jacksprat: The archive for Japanese Bishoujo Game Discussions is completed. I'll cross check this week if I missed any page. Will start with a new section after that.

@SidVanHalen: Dude, you’re a gentleman and a champ! Thanks so much for handling that section. On my end, I have the archiving for the “Bishoujo Games–Help!” section completely finished (no errors or omissions that I can see), and I think I have most of “English Bishoujo Game Discussions” finished, with a weird exception. On “English Bishoujo”, I started from the very oldest page and worked my way back to the present, and I seemed to be doing fine until the very end. I don’t understand why, but I am having an extremely hard time getting the WayBack Machine to remember the ground I cover for pages 1-10. It’s weird – it will selectively forget every third topic or every fifth page within a topic, sometimes after me telling it to archive multiple times… It’s very frustrating. Anyway, if you want to see if you have any better luck conquering this thing’s short-term memory loss, that might be a good next section to take a look at. I will check out some of the older pages within “English Bishoujo” and cross my fingers that the problem wasn’t ongoing for longer than I thought.

I noticed that the timestamp on the front page of the forums isn't consistent across devices. I checked the forums on my iPad about an hour after my last post. The front page said that post was 7min ago. Then when I click the topic and check the timestamp, it says the post was about an hour ago.

One of my posts is still getting blocked by your antispam software. You might want to take a look at the spam filters so that at least it doesn't trouble existing users with many posts under their belt.

You need a feature for distinguishing user ranks. For example, as of now, I could pretend to be a company employee and no one (new) would know the difference. Conversely, someone reading a random thread that Peter Payne has posted in would not necessarily know that he's running the show.

Requesting an addition to forum rules: x-nay on sexually explicit images within forum posts. I don’t want this tied to stricter image restrictions in the software (sometimes those are legitimate, especially in a troubleshooting situation), but rather as part of the rules of behavior so such posts can be removed by a moderator with fair warning.

I know we’re all adults, most of your games are 18+, yadda-yadda, but since connect.jast.com is your “HelpDesk” for all-ages titles as well as explicit ones and there’s no clear “18+” area within this part of the site, I think that would be a good house rule. Plus, it keeps this part of the website publicly browsable without any “oh, crap!” moments away from home. I don’t think the member in question meant any harm at all by it, but going forward…

Yes, we know the software we're currently using isn't as good as it could be. Our expectation was that there wouldn't be that much discussion here because old school things like blogs, message boards and so on are less important than they were a decade ago, most of the features wouldn't be missed. We'll do our best to add back features as we can. Too bad there isn't a plug in system for this BBS.

@Jacksprat1, that's a good idea.

Please add the edit feature. Lack of this feature is gamebreaking. The thread I just posted looks completely idiotic because I have to triple post to provide very basic updates. I'm trying to solicit community input for YOUR benefit, so this lack of professionalism doesn't only harm my message, it harms you too.

@Peter; Blogs and forums don’t compete, they complement each other. That’s pretty much all social media. These forums as they are, they’re very clean and cutesy. I could see myself using this place in conjunction with my blog/twitter/hentai-foundry/lite-erotica/etc. Any platform where people frequent is a place worth spreading your presence to.

Should you perhaps have asked people about this, whether they wanna use your forums? Sounds like you just kind of assumed stuff on a gut feeling. :open_mouth:

@Peter - that wasn't a very good assumption to make, since you also wanted to keep the regulars who expect those features to be there. And I'm with OtakuApologist - This new forum is nicer in some ways, but sucks in comparison in others. Asking would've let you find this out much earlier.

I'm really not feeling this antiquated vibe you keep saying about the previous forum, but it's pretty obvious you do considering you've already done as much posting here as you ever did on the old board. (You pretty much only ever showed up when you had no other choice before.)

I vastly prefer the previous forums from a functional standpoint. The only standout advantage of these forums, from a user perspective, is that staff post here. I understand however that spam was a problem in the previous forums and therefore they may have been an administrative burden to maintain.

So I filed a ticket - #350 - asking why I hadn’t gotten any notice about Hanchirasu shipping. I received a reply in my email which told me it had shipped but didn’t give any more info.

So I replied, also via email, asking for my tracking number. I see that this email created a new ticket rather than adding a comment to the existing ticket. This doesn’t seem like a good way to track tickets to me.

Wonderful, the lack of edit functionality.

For reference - the second ticket is #356

Here are a few improvement suggestions for the website and other areas:

Website:

- JAST USA: Add options for Pre-orders, Coming Soon, and Redeem Game Code under the Visual Novels in English drop-down menu. For Coming soon list titles scheduled for release one quarter out. Consider merging all-ages and adult store and to add a new tag All-Ages tag to drop-down menu; why have a separate store for 4 games? Offer free demos for your games and list option to download between Digital Download and Package Edition area. Add more screenshots to each game's product page (especially pre-orders) and add at least one trailer as well.

- JAST CONNECT: Enable editing of posts and hiding spoilers (text and images).

-JAST USA / CONNECT: Have a link for all of the various JAST sites (including social media) on the top of each webpage. Integrate JAST CONNECT into JAST USA as time permits.

- TUMBLR: List all licensed titles under Upcoming Titles and rename to Future Projects.

Games:

- Add walkthrough file/graphic that can be viewed in game to look up different routes. Consider color coding viewed and not viewed routes differently.

- Offer image stretching options for the game when playing in full screen allowing users to retain proper full screen ratio on a wide-screen monitor.

- Consider adding demos & trailers for your other titles on hard copy versions of your games.

Marketing:

- For marketing target paying customers that are already buying closely related goods. For your adult games advertise with H-Manga companies such as Project-H and Fakku by having them place a color leaflet in their books or have an ad at the end of the book itself (print and digital) or both.

- You could also check if Rightstuf would be able to include ads for your games in their shipments that include H-goods from companies other than your own. You could also place an ad for your most featured titles in their catalog and/or see if they can add a JAST (company or game specific) coupon to their catalog as well. Be sure to mention free demo availability in your ads. You could also check with Kitty Media if they would include game trailers on their upcoming release.

- Consider adding game download card to hard copies you send to other retailers / sell at conventions while using email to distribute game codes for J-List customers. This way everyone has an incentive to check out JAST USA no matter where they buy their game from.

- Last but not least do a Kickstarter for Mahoutsukai no Yoru.

Sorry for the font/size folks, copy-paste didn’t work out the way I wanted it to…
