Kenzero Virus

read this today at work, another reason not to download bishoujo games illegally :stuck_out_tongue:

I like the idea of it but if this money isn’t going back to the people who made the eroge I can’t really approve of it.

EDIT: though I guess the people behind this are probably avid supporters of eroge and most of the money would probably go back into the industry anyway

Extortion is extortion, plain and simple. If the legit IP owner released a fake like this, and actually pursued legal process against downloaders foolish enough to volunteer their name and contact info, that would be one thing. However, these are just some guys looking to profiteer by threatening people. It doesn’t matter how unsympathetic the victim is.

According to the writeup of this I saw, the virus also drops several .mp3s onto your computer directly - which are “sold” for hundreds of thousands of dollars online. Ten bucks says they’ll come back after anyone who pays up and demand a lot more commensurate to the “value” of the planted material.

i doubt it. it’s just like illegal downloads/hacked versions of windows that have virus/malware planted inside them, i doubt they are created by “avid supporters” of microsoft per se

dont tempt us :stuck_out_tongue:

Old news.

And I really wouldn’t recommend you guys at JAST (or anyone else) doing anything like this either. It may be illegal to download unauthorized versions of copyrighted software, but that’s far less frowned upon in court compared to spreading malware to deceptively acquire/publish personal information. At worst, pirating software will most likely get you into civil court via a lawsuit by the damaged company, whereas any case involving the spread of malware or anything involving obtaining personal information in such a manner will almost always get you into criminal court.

Not if the EULA you have to click thru to, uh, turn yourself in says that’s exactly what will happen. (Which I heard is what happens.)

Look at the picture they used for Japanese Ransom Trojan Horse :stuck_out_tongue:
