Large demo downloads question

Is ftp ever an option ,because my computer is almost open all the time. But there are 2 problems. One is that my address always changes, bcuz I am in DSL. Secondly, I only close my computer somewhere at 11p.m to 3:00 a.m EASTERN time…

I am sure that those difficulties are not impossible to surmount. I could always post my address after waking up…And some people has a schedule when one is able to download a file…or another person who also knows ftp in the western part…There is always creative ways to solve a problem…

Anyway, I do want to help in some form, so if Peapri is unable to find a more viable solution, I could always be an alternative…However, I must say that I am a very dependable person…one who does not slack around…

Kumiko wondered if anyone here has access to a large web space that could host downloads of some very large demos we have for certain titles. These run in the 60 MB range, so they're really too large for us to offer directly on our site, but if someone has the space and their ISP wouldn't mind, we could supply the downloads and then link to them.

We're just trying to figure out a feasible method to get these to people. Before anyone asks... demo CDs cost $$$.

Maybe I can because I have enough space. Also, ISP (Internet Service Provider) cost money correct. Do I have to pay the $$$? .

might want to check with fileplanet. I have downloaded strip poker games from there

Kumiko-san, does the demo files are executable demos or movie demos? If it is the later, you could try to reduce them before uploading to anywhere.

I have my own server (or rather, at work), but it is on an ADSL. The maximum upload speed is less than 5K, which is on the short end for hosting purposes… (Add the fact that it takes about 4 or 5 extra hops to reach where the server is)

However, I agree with Woodelf-san. By breaking the file into several pieces, each of us willing to host it, can have a part of the big file. AFAIK, none of us can host a single 60MB file, but many of us is willing to host, say a < 5MB file, each. It is just a matter of several small downloads instead of a huge download.

BTW, Kumiko-san, not all of us has broadband connection at home, so bare with those not-so-fortunate, and grant us the wish of smaller files. Have it ever happened to you that when you almost downloaded a 10MB file (a bit more than an hour on a 56K modem), your pesky sister picks up the phone, and breaks the connection? Oh, did I mentioned that it just happened that the site doesn’t support resuming, and you have to begin from scratch?

Hmm, spliting files. Can’t you just use something like RAR? I guess you don’t like it because most pirates use it? Anyway, RAR is just a compression program like ZIP but let you compress and break up big files. Once you get small RAR files, you can give those to people willing to put on their site.

However, the problem is the cost - not the file size. File size doesn't matter unless you have a problem with connections being dropped, but we can't do anything about that - a large file simply takes longer, that's all. The problem is that downloads cost $$$... and we don't have the $$$ to afford large downloading from our site, right now. We wish we did - it's sort of a catch-22.

I think somebody has been missing the point: None of us can host the whole file. I have a < 10MB website running, and I am barely using half of those 10MB. Likewise, several of you, is in a similar situation, has 10MB, but it is not using all of those 10MB. The point, right now, is not to divide the file for easier (or more cumbersome) download; instead, those demos can be hosted somewhere!

Kumiko-san: The option you are referring to is called disk spanning. It only works for removable media. BTW, WinRAR is also an off-the-shelf software, just as WinZIP.

There are utilities that can slice a file, for later reassembling, if you don't want to use WinRAR, such as (freeware) WinSplit. The choice is yours...

How much space do you need exactly? I have an account at Hostpro (Have no idea what they are called now) which has 300Meg of space and large amount of tranfer per month. 15G or so.

It has anonymous FTP. So it is possible for you to link to that server straight from your page if you like. I won’t using more than 40Meg, maybe 50, so there is heaps excess space. (Most of my stuff comes from the database which also has it’s own space.) Since this is professional hosting company and located in the US, it shouldn’t be down at all. (I hope anyway) And the bandwidth should very high. Also if the badnwidth exceeds my 15G monhtly maximum they won’t just shut my site or cut access either, they just charge my account automatically.

But I doubt you are going to find something free or that low cost without some kind of condition.

Well, my server has space for a 60meg file, easy. If you like I can give you acces to the public FTP site so your webmaster can start testing.

I thank whoever I can that I have a cable
modem because some of the demos I have downloaded over the months have been over 30 meg and even then some have been 3 separate files from the gamemaker each file being over 15 or so meg. If I did not have cable no matter how many pieces you broke it up into I could never download them… AS usual my 2 cents…
