Non-consent discussion

After playing straight through Desire for 24 hours straight, and strangely enough not becoming blurry eyed due to lack of sleep at 5:45 AM in the morning, this is so far one of the better translated Visual novel games I’ve played that’s been translated to the English market. Absolutely engrossing, although I thought the H-content of this game actually detracted from the storytelling. I wish the game was fleshed out more without showing more flesh ^_^; But, I wanted to start a discussion on the topic of non-consent in erotica. Everytime I see a girl, or guy, being treated badly I start crying. I don’t think theres any amount of extenuating circumstances that can justify the subjectivization of a woman or man into acts of humiliation or violence. It seems to be a rather popular theme in erotica, but I utterly reject its premise that the subject of a non-consent relationship eventually comes to enjoy it.

Well, considering the total mutual consensus of total disgust for Makoto that draws intense reactions when her name is mentioned, I would say that a lot of English Fandom agrees with you.

What’s the draw, the audience appeal of non-consent relationships? Zen zen wakarimasen yo.

I have to agree, Desire was a cool game and the adult content did detract from the games a little (especially the non-consent stuff, I don’t really like that stuff either). It was still an awsome game, but I don’t think I could have ever played it for 24 hours straight, lol.

Oh, I apologize for not elaborating my stance on the issue of non-consent relationship. I said I rejected these premises simply because I couldn’t ever do something like that, my protective instincts would automatically go up and put a stop to this travesty, but I do agree that it’s just another facet of life that people would rather shun rather than study. I think Kunihiko Ikuhara said it best when he said ‘The adult world is a desolate and impure world, one may make the decision of not growing up and believing in fairy tales, castles, princes and princesses, or one can step out beyond these constraints and become an adult in a dirty world.’ I don’t think this is verbatim, but it’s most of the message. I just want to know, what’s the audience appeal of non-consent? Why is it an erotic appeal?

Hey all,

Not quite an answer to the question possed, but, when you do play Desire, make sure you watch the credits at the very end of the last scenario… the ending is fantastic.

Having read the books of John Norman, Ann Rice(try her Beauty stories) and other writers into M/S and B/D, where non-consent sex happen all the time, I would like to put my two cents in:

IT IS JUST SEXUAL FANTASY!!!

After reading these books did I want to go out kidnap, enslave, rape and abuse a girl, NO. I have read stories with non-consensual sex and I have read stories where the sex was consensual and that is all they were stories!! They were escapism from the real world. Why do we play these game if not to escape the real world for a few moments(as well as see all the pretty girls). Look in any romance section of a book store and you will see tons and tons of books that are just sexual fantasy and escapism. From the covers and the blurbs on the front and back, to all the words in-between.
Who does not like to let go of the real world every now and then and escape in to a world where all the men are handsome and muscular and all the women are beautiful and submissive, the sex between them is great and you can do thing you would not have done in your real life(including non-consensual sex). It is however important to remember that the real world and this world are not interchangeable and never will be. When the book or game is done, we go back to living our lives as they were before we started the book or game. I hope every one can understand what I have tried to say in this regard. It is just escapism from our normal daily routine.
