Would an ADV game or a visual novel work in a multiplayer context? I’m not sure, since they’re all about story. One could theoretically be created in a “round robin” way, but that generally implies a cobbled-together story.
Would a dating sim work in a multiplayer context? Maybe. True Love de-emphasized story and had a good number of abstract game elements. Just going from what I remember of it, it might be possible to create something similar. Would players only be able to create relationships with NPCs, or would they be able to connect with each other? How many NPCs might exist? Would this work in a “living city” environment?
None of the Newgrounds “sim date” games that I’ve seen were well written. But they had good gameplay ideas. If the bad characterization/dialogue could be removed, and if the fights actually made sense, then they might be good precedent for online games - multiplayer or not.
(I recall that Dave Barry once made a joke that if more women created games, there would be more player interaction and less destruction. In other words, hooray for shoujo!)
