I’m kind of fasinated by how otakus redraw their favorite anime or manga characters to do what they like most… Well I’m not against doujins but does it hurt the original artist big time .
No more than fanfiction really hurts (or helps, even) the original.

Well, I don't think it hurts them. Heck, some artists do the same thing with their own characters. Gainax and those nudie Eva cd-roms for example.
What’s more, some (maybe many) artists began as doujin artists.
You guys probably know that most of those doujin artists sell their works, eventhough it’s not their original concept, for quite an amount of cash in the net . If they really honor the original artist, should they ask his or her permission first before selling their plagarized works .

Actually alot of these Doujinshi artist make very little $$ off of the Doujinshi they print. Yes, they have to print all the books themselves. They go to a printing shop and use their money to print copies.
Many artists (Even pro Doujin artists) only charge 500-2000 ($5-$20) yen for their Doujinshi at Comike and other events.
A bit of profit will go to big shops like Toranoana and LL Palace if the artist chooses to sell his works again to the mass market.
Most of the time the circle will have to
re-print any books that these shops will sell. (More $$ out of the artists pocket)
The MAIN profit goes to the fans or "so called fans" that go auction crazy and put the artist's books up on Ebay and Yahoo. Some of these people make way more money than the artist will ever make for their Doujinshi. They all know since the Doujinshi is out of print, others have no real choice but to pay the price they charge (Same goes with used book stores).
Even when the artist will re-print the same Doujinshi again to sell at the next Comic Market or Event. (Even ones that went really exspensive on the Japanese market before) They always charge the same price they did before, dispite the previous "market value" of the book.
I seriously doubt any artists "Live" off of the Doujinshi they create. ^_^;;

Like that Rei Ayanami-fan artist for Brave soul? He've done some doujins of his own, it seems, but otherwise he's working as an artist of adult bishoujo games?

He was kinda joking around on his page, saying that he worked in fast food (LOL)
Then stated he was J/K and that he was working at a bank.
Even if an artist becomes a pro from dojin, there are not few people who don’t stop a dojin.
The reason is because he(she) likes parody, for the money, and varies.
