Played the demo if Brave soul

hmmm…I don’t know what to make of Brave soul’s demo…is the gameplay the same as the full version???. I was wondering if there is more to the combat system than what the demo had shown me…

I was hoping that brave soul would surpass
Megatech’s knight of xentar…(good old bishoujo RPG ^_^!)

p.s- I will buy the game even though the combat system is… (*yikes! Reminds me of RPG’s on the Old NES). I hope that the story and the multiple endings will make up for it.

I know what you mean. I think that this is probably the reason that Peach Princess have not added this demo to their downloads page. You have to bare in mind though that in the full game, you'll be controlling up to four characters at the same time and there will be loads of weapons / magic. The story also has multiple endings. It will definitely be one that I'll be getting (if it's ever released).

Since I own Knights of Xentar, I can say it is a good RPG with a really big flaw (which Megatech can be blamed for).

The writing and dubbing is awful (The lead character's voice changed to a surfer dude's all of the sudden). It just seem like they made up their own dialouge which disturbs the flow of the story (the part with the Goddess for example).

By the way, can Brave Soul be controled with the control pad? It is kind of cumbersome to play an Ys-type game with a mouse.

I’ve wondered and asked about playing Brave Soul with a keyboard (or controller) before. I mean, it would make more sense considering the game movement is on a grid, thus only enabling four-way movement, just like the keyboard arrow keys, or a controllers directional pad.

Actaully, I hate playing any game using a mouse. I rarely use my mouse for anything.

I’d like to see keyboard support too.

I’m not too worried about the controls really, if I really must use the mouse, then I will - Come to think of it, I haven’t pre-ordered it yet. I did just order X-Change though. (despite the not-so-positive things I hear about it).

I totally, completely disagree. I played “Knights of Xentar” and that was totally overrated.
The combat was very hard to play since most of it was auto-fought. There also wasn’t a speed selection, so on fast computers, all the enemies and monsters moved at some ridiculous speed, making any sort of combat control almost impossible.
And how about that “strategy” selection? Totally worthless. You could keep the fight selection on “Learn” for almost the entire game, and you’d do better than if you kept shifting it around between the different attack modes.

I can’t believe that there’s so much criticism for Brave Soul. I played the demo myself, and I wasn’t the least bit disappointed. (Except for maybe the targeting interface as it can make you tired from all the clicking). But overall, the game reminded me of those retro games like Legend of Zelda which I sort of miss. I’d personally rather play Brave Soul than all these new flashier games.
Plus, it’s an RPG. For bishoujo games, these are typically uncommon, so I like that uniqueness. And RPGs are great because your objectives are very clearly defined. A lot of adventure games are almost guessing games because most of the modern ones are very difficult to tell which answers lead to which endings off-hand.
I also like how your partners in the game aren’t just chumps that just wander around in the background and mostly get themselves killed. They are typically smart enough to take out a number of enemies and will try to keep themselves alive. I’ve seen so many countless games where your “pals” are just morons that don’t do anything useful.

Also, let's remember that RPGs are not rare for bishoujo gaming.

True. But they're not common either. AFAIK, bishoujo games rather tend to ADV and SIM...

...stats based CRPGs like Brave Soul really do not allow roleplaying, per se. It's more a matter of build up your character through combat to get to an ending. There's no chance to really playact as roleplaying was intended to be. That's true for most any CRPG out there - it's the downside of using a computer for the gamemaster rather than a human being. This has been stated many times throughout the history of CRPGs - it's just something that gamers have to deal with, and it's one huge reason why pencil and paper gamers still feel a bit superior. In essence, they are - at least as far as genuine roleplaying is concerned.

True, true!!! I hate how the tag "RPG" is now applied to various games with NO roleplaying whatsoever: T-RPGs, C-RPGs or all those online fightinggames!!!!

Or rather, they have the potential to be - if pencil and paper gamers begin to focus on stats over genuine roleplaying, they'll also become nothing more than a CRPG, pretty much automated and not roleplaying anymore.
Maunty hauls and munchkins are NOTroleplayers!!!!!

Depending on who designs the module, Neverwinter Nights from Bioware might just be the CRPG you’ll Have to roleplay.
