Interesting read. Will Wright on video games. He’s a video game legend, plus I love all his sim games, and therefore gets all my respect… but I TOTALLY disagree with his views on “premade” plot driven games. They’re some of the best ever made.
Nonetheless, he’s a gaming designing god, and I’ll buy whatever he makes that catches my eye. :o
Yeah. I mean, if he’d said that he doesn’t like premade plot-driven games, well, that’s his opinion. But to say that games are the wrong medium for telling stories is just flat out wrong. Some of the best selling games in history have been story heavy. In fact, a common criticism of even an action FPS will be that the plot is weak.
The number of games that are pure gameplay with little or no story is much smaller than games that have narrative worked through them. It honestly seems strange that he would say such a thing, since it’s so clearly at odds with what you see when you go into any store that sells videogames.
It IS an interesting read though. And the man IS rightly regarded as a genius.

Google Books settlement rejected today. Can’t say I’m terribly surprised … given the severity of the objections, I would have been quite surprised if the judge had approved it.
My guess? Google changes it to opt-out which would eliminate pretty much all the problems … Then Google and the publishing industry go lobby for new laws to deal with the orphan works issues.
I don’t understand blogging when someone can just start a private journal. If they wanted feed back on things can’t they just join a forum? Or is it because it is taboo to grab too much attention on forums that they run those people off to blogs. Does every blogger think their posts are special enough to have their own page? Perhaps they just want to help others and it isn’t for the feed back.

I’m going to learn Japanese now. Not just for a bigger selection of video games. I’m going to learn it for listening to jpop. I can set aside those other hobbies for a few years now that my heart is open due to an album I took a chance on despite the fact that I rarely listen to music. I want to see if I have the discipline to learn especially when my pride can take a hit if I fail. Being able to communicate in another language is extremely useful and more options in entertainment would be great. I will do it.
I’ve mentioned this elsewhere, but I recommend taking college classes for the beginning. Sure, it moves slow, but memorizing the two phonetic alphabets takes time anyway. Find somewhere the classes are taught by native speakers and take classes at a community college of some kind. There are two main advantages - one, it forces you to do the work on a schedule, and two, if you work the price out you end up paying less per hour than you would for a private tutor.
Some of the youths I know are idiots but then I only know them online so I may be wrong.
Down the road I’d be interested in that to learn the language, Nandemonai.
