*shrug* For some reason it's easier for me if I memorize it in hiragana than in romanji. Now the question is, how am I going to work that in a conversation somewhere?

Easy.

Actually, for some reason, it appears to be written in katakana: ハツカネズミ. I can only assume that the word derives from some foreign influence, although it looks Japanese enough to me.

ISTR there is a small mouse-like thing called a pika in English, though… lives on mountains or something?

Oh, it’s a Japanese derived word, but since the Kanji for mouse is pretty complicated, it’s pretty common to use kana instead.

The kanji for Nezumi(mouse) is ¬ël…and the Hatsuka can be either "√±¬è\(20 days old) or "√π"√∫(young)

Uh…correction on that. The 2nd kanji for Hatsuka also means 20 days. I was thinking about something else…

Heh, reminds me of that show "Eddie Izzard: Dress to Kill". For those who havn't seen it, there's a part where he talks about learning French and that the first couple of phrases he learned were stuff like "the mouse is under the table", "the cat is on the chair", and "the monkey is in the tree". Then he briefly talks about the only way he could work those in a conversation is to walk around France with a cat, a mouse, a chair, a table, and a monkey in heavily wooded areas.

Er oddly enough, I found this page on "pika":
