The fairy nights games

so who has played the fairy nights games? i have looked at them with interest for a while, but have never actually purchased them, because i read somewhere that they are not interactive in the least…

so could some of you who have played them enlighten me as to how it plays out, what it is like, etc? no story spoilers, please!

The Fairy Night stories play like visual novels. I wonder if the Mahjong part were originally available as gameplay, but if there were any they are gone in the English versions. I liked the stories a lot, the characters are cute and the dialogues are hilarious. Sorry this is short, people are lining up for these computers.

Pretty much what Bokmeow-san said. It’s a linear visual novel for the most part. And I was a bit dissapointed when I first played it and found that the mahjong playing was automatic, not interactive. The only interaction you really have is clicking to advance in the story. (And some slight scrolling if I recall.)

eek, you don’t even get ot play mahjong??? eek, yuck, pooh…

i think fairy nightsi s not for me, then…i like a little more interactivity than just clicking NEXT…i don’t mind one ending, as long as i have the illusion that i am making my own choices (example, EVE: Burst error)…looks like Fairy won’t even give me that

Japanese Mahjong also has one strange rule; Under certain bizarre circumstances, there are some cards that cannot satisfy victory conditions. I haven’t enough good Japanese to put the question to my host family yet. So, It’d be fun to have Mahjong game, but it would probably also be frustrating without a primer. I’m surprised I even managed to complete Super Real Mahjong Premium Collectino for the Neo Geo Pocket by circumventing that annoying restriction.

Thanks! That's quite a hint!
Got "Sho-Ki" from C's today and I think, this trap will be impleneted there too.

Hmm, if I recall correctly, it’s because there was some specification about your hands composition. Like if you played rummy with the additional condition that all your cards had to be the same color. I forget exactly. I used to know the rules but it’s been over a decade since I’ve played any mahjong (Japanese or Chinese) and I don’t really remember.

Unicorn be ready for frustration in Sho-Ki. It took me forever to beat that game, firstly they use some modified rules for the mahjongg and since I don’t understand Japanese completely it took me quite awhile to play around those rules. Also they throw in some sort of magic attack system that can allow the females to get an article of their clothing back which will really drive you nuts when you are just one piece from winning and they get another piece and a couple rounds later the game ends (ugh!). But all in all Sho-ki was a good investment and I did have fun playing the mahjongg. Dat-sui Jan 2 is quite a bit better though and uses very realistic rules and no magic attacks. Also it has full screen animated scenes that are very well done. I never did figure out how to get the secret characters in Sho-ki either.

Yikes!
My first frustration was, when I found out, that the engine of Sho-Ki does not work together with NJWin, but I figured, I would carry on by simply listening to the voices.
A magic system. Hmmm. Sounds pretty unfair. Maybe, this is in order to compensate, that a machine is no match for a skilled human player (as in other games, the laws of coincidence seem to be manipulated a bit in favour of the computer players).
Anyway, thanks to your warning, I am prepared and will try my best to beat them all (not to mention: find the hidden characters).

Good luck, I also have some minor translations I put together (basically only the stat screen and the 2 questions your asked) if you want them. I can also include my ideas how to get the characters. Let me know and I can email them over to you.
