What the hell kind of instruction are they giving during military training these days?! Anyone who is a responsible owner of a firearm knows that the first thing you do when cleaning a weapon is make sure the weapon is unloaded and the breech empty.
That gun didn’t fire off during cleaning… that’s what the military is saying to avoid a political shitstorm.
The military uses documentation called Standard Operating Procedures (SOP), for EVERYTHING they do. Painting. Cleaning a room. Turning on a machine. EVERYTHING. The damn things even have little pictures for someone illiterate. You can’t even checkout the cleaning supplies for something, without bringing a copy of the SOP with you - because the SOP says you have to bring a copy of it with you to check out cleaning supplies.
Someone was playing around - maybe didn’t know the safety was off - and unloaded rounds into the harbor. Ever since the USS Cole attack, US Navy ships stay fully ammo’ed and arm’ed… even in a peaceful port. The cleaning thing is just an excuse to keep the media away… my money is that it was an idiot sailor fucking around. Probably wasn’t even a Gunner’s Mate… maybe some random Deck Monkey fresh outta boot camp, who thought it be cool to touch it.
That or the US is really at war with Poland. Next week a 5-inch artillery shell from the main gun will accidently fire into a town. Then next month, a nuclear armed cruise missile will accidently hit the Polish capital, followed by an accidental air strike on all Poland military bases. 
… all that for Poland. Guess we want to pay back Poland for Roman Polanski.
France better look out next. At least with that war we know we’ll have the full support of the British .
I got an old friend who ended up in the Navy (long story, like most stories that end up “so I joined the Navy”, and I wasn’t actually around for much of any of it cause I moved away as a kid).
He was telling me about his basic training. They got these cool training guns they use for firearms training: the first lesson, they get real M-16s that have been modified to shoot harmless laser pulses. The instructor says “Treat this as you would if it were a real gun. Do not touch the weapon unless explicitly instructed.” Some guys, they followed directions. Other people said “Cool, an M16!”, grabbed it, and sprayed the room with … well, laser pulses.
The way my friend described it was “these are the people who fail this section of the training”.
