After watching the Mahoromatic Summer Special I was reminded of the things that initially drew me to the series - the humor, romance and plot twists involving an android maid. I also remembered how disappointed I was with the second season ending and thought about how I would have written it. [WARNING - SPOILERS AHEAD]
Throughout the first season and much of the second, the central story concerns Mahoro’s desire to settle down to the peace and tranquility of domestic life and the developing relationship between her and Suguru. There is the added element of the countdown clock that creates a sense of danger and ultimate futility. The writers throw all that away in the concluding episode. Mahoro sacrifices herself for the good of the organization and Suguru is relegated to living out a dark existence as a derelict and hired gun.
Forget all that. Instead, have Suguru discover the nature of the self-destruct timer, penetrate Vesper and uncover the secret needed to extend Mahoro’s lifespan. In the process, let Vesper, Saint and Management eliminate each other. I have no use for secret organizations run by megalomaniacs, no matter whose side they claim to be on. Give Mahoro and Suguru the chance to find happiness together. The closing scene has a liberated Mahoro dumping the last of Suguru’s magazines and telling him with a smile, “you won’t be needing these anymore”.
So how about it? Do you have any favorite anime that you would have given a different ending, or supplied an ending if it lacked one?
