You write the ending...

After watching the Mahoromatic Summer Special I was reminded of the things that initially drew me to the series - the humor, romance and plot twists involving an android maid. I also remembered how disappointed I was with the second season ending and thought about how I would have written it. [WARNING - SPOILERS AHEAD]

Throughout the first season and much of the second, the central story concerns Mahoro’s desire to settle down to the peace and tranquility of domestic life and the developing relationship between her and Suguru. There is the added element of the countdown clock that creates a sense of danger and ultimate futility. The writers throw all that away in the concluding episode. Mahoro sacrifices herself for the good of the organization and Suguru is relegated to living out a dark existence as a derelict and hired gun.

Forget all that. Instead, have Suguru discover the nature of the self-destruct timer, penetrate Vesper and uncover the secret needed to extend Mahoro’s lifespan. In the process, let Vesper, Saint and Management eliminate each other. I have no use for secret organizations run by megalomaniacs, no matter whose side they claim to be on. Give Mahoro and Suguru the chance to find happiness together. The closing scene has a liberated Mahoro dumping the last of Suguru’s magazines and telling him with a smile, “you won’t be needing these anymore”.

So how about it? Do you have any favorite anime that you would have given a different ending, or supplied an ending if it lacked one?

After I watched that DVD, I was most amazed at Suguru’s collection…

Hmm, not sure. I do agree with you that Mahoromatic’s ending should have been different. Most of the other’s that come to mind are like Love Hina and Kare Kano, but that’s mainly because I know how the manga generally goes and I didn’t like the point at which the anime ended. Of course, after all the anime over the years, I’m struggling to just remember how they ended at all!

I would have liked to have seen Dragon Half been given a proper ending. How’d it end, I’ll have to come up with later. Busy busy.

I was always frustrated that they did Tenchi Muyo as a series, and never really “completed” the OAV. Okay… they “ended” it, but left a lot of plot elements hanging. I gather that the manga goes into some of them, but I don’t have the resources and the money to track down all of the old Tenchi manga to find out what the heck became of all of the things that they omitted or rewrote differently for the series

Hmm..actually the manga doesn't resolve anything either The manga kinda starts after the end of the first ova series then pretty much goes it's merry way not resolving anything your looking for.

Course the new set of OVAs that's comming out in Japan is suppose to resolve things. We'll have to see but from what I've read it's actualy even more convoluted now.

Great... Well, I'm glad I didn't spend a lot of time looking for the manga in hopes of finding any resolution

Heh... Double great. Actually, I enjoyed the OAV enough that I don't really care if they convolute the plot any more as long as they carry on with it. Hopefully, Pioneer will still be able to get the American licensing to do the English translation so that those of us who can only understand a teeny-weeny bit of Japanese can fully enjoy what's going on. Convolutions and all

Mahoromatic spoilers ABOUND in the below.

Well, there are a number of rewrites I would use on Mahoromatic. I’m not sure how much would survive, though, and that’s too bad. Basically everything boils down to “none of the show’s REAL plot makes any sense at all”. There is absolutely no reason that Mahoro had to die. She is an ANDROID. They could have given her a new body that was not susceptible to the limitations her old one had; probably it wouldn’t be very useful for fighting but she was retiring anyway. And it also seems to me they were just making things up as they went along in regards to The Overarching Story.

But aside from that I didn’t really like the Deus Ex Machina they pulled in the last episode. Either kill her off, or don’t; don’t do both. I would have kept the last episode largely the same, except that I would have had Mahoro turn out to be a ghost haunting him at the very end. It would even largely fit with the rest of the canon, because there is that one episode of the first season.

Manga? Really? And after all these years, I never knew. I just simply assumed it was an original anime that never finished because the director went to jail.

The director went to jail? Really? I thought that was a rumor.

Anyway - yes, there is a (fairly long) original manga. You know the demon kid in the second episode? Apparently they really DID write out all of his scenes.

I’m pretty sure that Tenchi will get liscensed here in R1. It did pretty well for Pion…err geneon when they first released it. My guess is that once all the episodes are done we’ll hear of the liscensing announcement

Dragonhalf manga was pretty good. If you liked the anime then you will definately like the manga. More hijinks and jokes in the manga Man I wish someone would publish here in english

That would be cool... Tenchi was one of my favorites. Is it not Pioneer? That's whose name pops up all over my DVD's, anyway (I've got the set that bundles the whole OAV together with all the little extras... The only problem with that one was that they left of the Magical Girl Pretty Sammy episode)

Pioneer is now Geneon. More or less the same people, just a different name. Wanfu2k1-san gets confused enough as it is...

Heh well Pioneer pretty much is out of the dvd production business they sold their productions to geneon so geneon holds all of Pioneers titles both here and in Japan. That’s why I used geneon

Oh and yeah from what I’ve read Tenchi looks like he may have a new fiancee

No, Pioneer is no more. There is only Geneon. As far as I know they completely renamed themselves. Nothing actually changed hands.

Heh... just what Tenchi needs--another girl to mess up his life

Well, I don't care who is called what... Pioneer, Geneon, Acme, Whatever... as long as someone puts out some more Tenchi Muyo!

I do wonder why they decided to change, though... maybe too many people wanted to buy stereos from them...

That's what I meant Pioneer sold their entire devision to Dentsu Inc last year so they no longer have any presence in anime production.
Actually the entire division changed hands from Pioneer to Dentsu.

Since Pioneer doesn't own them anymore they probably forced the name change so people don't confuse them with Pioneer the hardware component Company.

I thought the whole company changed names. Apparently I am misinformed.

It makes sense, though, that they'd spin off their animation division. It was always kind of odd, that a hardware manufacturer would be in the animation business. A bit too diverse to really keep everything in sync, I'd imagine...
