Have you completely given up on BL content? (I know about piracy issues, but a lot of fans didn’t even know about Enzai and Absolute Obedience being translated in English, and this without mentioning that Enzai is disgusting to a lot of people. Even though AO is better on that aspect, it’s not the fav of a lot of fans either. And about fan translations… well, they can’t take off the censorship, so I think it’s worth buying American copies. And just by the way, you should make a survey to know what would bl fans enjoy, (on Aarin Fantasy’s forums, as an example), because really, I downloaded Enzai and loved it, but I’m not sure Canada boarder services will allow it in. I don’t want it seized.)
There are some cutesy BL games out there. If they ever consider it they may want to try a more cutesy game cause I don’t really think the ones they released (although Enzai had a good story) were really what most BL fans would enjoy (Dark, lots of rape etc). Although THe Nitro+Chiral BL games would probably sell well cause they are very well known among the BL community.
Disagree again: BL fans exist and are numerous. It’s just that eroge is not known well enough for it to sell well. I mean until I tried Enzai I thought eroge was like those weird and boring erotic flash games all over the Internet. Come on! If Yaoi mangas sell so much, why wouldn’t it sell in Eroge? (Though I admit that even if as a gay man I don’t like yuri much - though I find it cute - they should make more of it. But don’t talk as if nobody loved BL and everyone wants otome and yuri only.
I’m not saying there isn’t a market for BL. I’m just saying, JAST has localised BL, they haven’t localised otome/yurige (although they did acquire that Escalation thing, right?) before so it would be nice for JAST to diversify its stock a little.
Sadly the only particularly excellent otome game I’ve thus far found is a voiceless doujin title… but I’m sure there’s more.
Well, there probably are quite a few people interested in it, I’ve got no doubts about that… Though do you really expect they’d get the same amount of sales from a BL game, as they would from playing it safe with something else?
Might make a profit, I honestly wouldn’t know as I’ve never really put my head around those sorts of games. But with the marked which we’ve been talking about in lengths on different threads, I’d be utterly surprised if it would be a good “marketing” move from JAST’.
Mmhhh… I guess you’re right on that matter, but they can still give it a shot here and there (at least once every two-three years.) Yaoi manga are not as popular as Naruto, despite we still get some, so why not making a few at least? Besides, I’m convinced- though I might be wrong, off course - that the lack of success was a bit due to an absence of advertisement of any type and the titles they chose. I mean God, Enzai! Even among the Yaoi community, it’s considered weird and perverted. Lamento and TnC would sure make more sells. Not so much, but more.
The problem is, these games are already a niche market even among anime fans. And BL games are a very specific sub-niche within this small niche.
While perhaps the specific games selected were not good test cases, there comes a point where you have to say “is it worth throwing more resources at this to see what works?” And apparently, yaoi games were not very successful for them.
Pure yuri titles exist, but none of them are worth licensing. Titles that contain yuri are perhaps a better bet, as there are a reasonable number of them, some of which are very good indeed (there’s a fan translation of Katahane in progress, and the original game is very easy to get hold of from dlsite, so that would be one for yuri fans to look forward to). I’d throw my vote in for licensing otome games, as from my experience, I’ve found that yuri and yaoi work best as elements/routes within a title, not as the sole focus of it.
I understand the reason behind them not making any Yaoi, but yes, I think it’s worth. Not too often, though (don’t want them to go bankrupt!), but one every five years is not going to kill them. I believe there is a target audience for everything and everyone should be satisfied in the modern world. Make stuff for all tastes. When it sells a lot, make craploads of it. When it doesn’t sell, well don’t make much, but still make a few.
(Despite the fact that I have to agree that if there is enough of sex scenes and they focus on pretty bishounen, yes, might be a good deal for me, even more if there is a bit of yaoi in this too. But the plot is not to put aside, since it’s mostly what made me enjoy Enzai.)
As a player, and from what I’ve read on EGS/2ch/various other eroge related sites/blogs (this is one of the most interesting and informative ones I’ve come across). I guess I was also primarily referring to full length story based titles - if something’s being sold primarily on the characters or ero, or is only a few hours long, then the lack of (significant) male and/or female characters won’t be nearly as important. [Edit: Just to clarify, I think the real problem here is (at least in the examples I’m familiar with) with the vast majority of pure yuri/yaoi eroges, yuri implies an entirely female cast or otherwise no male characters of note, and vice versa for yaoi. As a result, the stories are kind of limited to ‘single sex’ settings, which really puts a clamp on what can be achieved.]
You’re right somehow, but I think this can be solved merely by picking the games with the best story/character development. (Which can be hard for them as they apparently don’t know much about Yaoi. I think the best would be for them to focus on otome, yuri, and other stuff like that and Kitty Media to go with Yaoi. They recently released a few erotic game translations and they know about Yaoi, those they picked are among the most famous ones out there.)
