About BL games (To the staff)

To the contrary, releasing a game in English will increase the number of times it is illegally downloaded.

Of course, this is a moot point because 1) it is impossible to stop illegal downloads and 2) there’s no profit to stopping illegal downloads

I agree too. Otome is a lot better than BL games with more public ready to buy them.

Yuri could sell better than Bl because guys buy more yuri games tan women buy yaoi games. But as i man, a rather to see in sell otome games than yuri’s, even thogh i’m not going to play a otome, yuri game or BL game (the last one i don’t even want to get near to them).

I occasionally play yaoi as well as otome games, though obviously not as much as regular eroge. So, my top picks in each genre look something like this

Yaoi Games:

  1. Shingakkou -Noli Me Tangere-. I’m a huge fan of the shoujo artwork, the music is great, the characters are compelling, and it has a damn fantastic premise. It’s mostly focused on plot which happens to have yaoi content, not yaoi constructed around a paper-thin excuse for a story. It takes place in a rather unique time period: directly after WWII, and PIL/SLASH actually takes into account the whole persecution against gays back then, especially in such a strict religious environment. The scenario writers are also the people behind Cyc Rose (one of them is, at least), so take that as you will. Definitely not for the average fangirl.
  2. Laughter Land. I think this is the best Langmaor game to date. It’s far from amazing, mindblowing stuff, but I enjoyed it significantly more than a lot of other yaoi titles. It has a very happy-go-lucky, typical fantasy-land atmosphere at first glance, but it gets progressively darker as you get deeper into the story. Above average, though definitely nowhere near the best.

I haven’t played the Nitro+ CHiRAL games yet, so I can’t comment on those.

Otome Games:

  1. Gekka Ryouran Romance, although it’s a 15+ title for the PSP. Truthfully, this is the only otome-ge I’ve ever liked. Yuri fans may rejoice, there is a girl/girl route avaliable! Each hero/heroine is also a major, major yandere in at least one of their endings, which is great if you’re into that sort of thing. Each winnable character has roughly five endings each: one bad end, two pure love ends, and two prohibited love ends. Although the names are misleading: the “pure love” endings often have the worst outcome.

and that’s all I can recommend for otome-ge, although the upcoming OZMAFIA and Black Wolves Saga look like they’ll be great.

Boy you’re naive =P

Also, you forgot to list Hadaka Shitsuji.

Hadaka Shitsuji <3

I’d give up all the spider-girls in the world to have that in English :o
But since it has both bestiality and incest it wouldn’t stand a chance at an unedited English release :frowning:

Princess Waltz has incest.
STARLESS has bestiality.

You’re saying they can’t both be in the one game? =P

STARLESS has to be censored to be released legally. It’s illegal to show any form of bestiality in 32 US states. http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Zoophilia_and_the_law#National_laws
Hadaka Shitsuji would fall under the same boat, meaning we’d lose one of Komines scenes.

The incest part is mostly a concern due to it being a bl game.
People react differently to brother/sister in h-games then they do to father/son.

Meanwhile, i started uploading the files for Hadaka Shitsuji to TLwiki. DO WANT TRANSLATORS!

There should be less objection, since they can’t BREED that way!

Nothing stops you from buying the Japanese versions…

Language barrier?

EDIT: I’m idiot, I missed the line about downloading the Japanese versions.

This sentence seems to suggest she downloads them.

Yeah, realised that after I posted. Nitro+ don’t seem to be releasing the Chiral games for DL sales, which is generally the easiest way to get titles that are a bit old, but they seem to be widely available second hand at relatively cheap prices.

Naturally I still stick by my recommendation of Toki-Hako as far as otome games go. I can’t recommend any titles other than this at the moment but I’ll definitely bring them up if I find them.

I play a lot of otome games (I think I’ve played nearly every non-absolutely-awful-looking one on DLsite, including ???- which incidentally is no longer available anywhere) and it is really sad that I haven’t found more good ones.

So…anyone still here? Has there been any news at all or at least SOME kind of hint that we’ll ever be getting some BL games again? I mean, I’m fine getting by with Translation Aggregator and the few English patches out there but… I’m dying here…

They’ve mentioned an interest in Nitro+Chiral on twitter. But they’ve said they wont be licensing anymore Nitro+ titles till they get through the current catalog (so another year or 2).
Unfortunately by that time they’ll all be translated. 3/4 main titles have patches in progress and of 2 of those 3 are over 70% complete. Meanwhile 1 of the 2 fandisks they’ve released have already been translated.

Mangagamer however has expressed interested in Shinkon-San~Sweet Sweet Honeymoon~ since its from Baseson~SPICE~. They’ve also mentioned an interest in Gakuen Heaven every so often. But SPRAY is owned by Visual Arts who Mangagamer tried to license from already. Visual Art’s isn’t interested until sales increase. At one of the conventions too, Bamboo (owns Mangagamer) was asked about Yaoi and Otome titles. He mentioned he wanted Mangagamer to expand into them but he himself didn’t much about either.

In the words of a wise person, money talks. Companies might not start licensing more games with alternative pairings (such as BxB and GxB) until they sense there’s money to be made. So if you enjoy alternative pairings, and you know of a still-in-print game in your language that matches your interests, then make sure to buy it.

I filtered the Visual Novel Database for the tag “shounen ai,” and then ordered the results by release date. Seven of the titles released since April 2011 are freeware products in English. Only three of these are also tagged with “yaoi.”) A couple of upcoming indie games are set to include BxB pairings. I know that some fans are still trying to translate BxB games, but it’s been a while since the most recent effort reached completion.

A few companies have been localizing GxB games. Looking at what’s been released since October 2011, four iOS games and one PSP visual novel have been translated. As of this writing, it appears that Hakuouki has sold almost 50000 copies. If that’s considered a success for a niche product on a console that’s not often considered profitable, then perhaps people will take notice.

“That matches your interests” is where the issue first arose however.

The general thought in the Yaoi community is that JAST didn’t look for what fans were interested in and instead chose what they already access too (‘Will’ being the parent producer of ‘Langmaor’). Neither of the titles being high on the interest chain…even if they were straight titles they wouldn’t be successful. The idea was a failure as soon as JAST chose to take the easy approach rather then to do the research.

Take Enzai:
We got a 16 year old boy (18 in the english) locked up in jail who is repeatedly raped, pee’d upon and tortured by inmates and prison guards. Many Yaoi fans refused to buy the game due to the content, it’s far to extreme for a first title.

Take Absolute Obedience:
An agency that goes around converting straight/curious boys (of which atleast 3 are not over 18) into gay sex through rape, blackmail and other methods. While not as extreme as Enzai, its extreme enough to scare off a fair few people.

Mangagamer has at least taken a more forward approach. Making a post on Aarinfantasy asking for title suggestions, interests and more. Eventually making references in one blog post to Gakuen Heaven and making a mention of Shinkon-San ~Sweet Sweet Honeymoon~ on Aarinfantasy. Quiet frankly they’re the direct opposite of what JAST released and have received a much better response that Aarinfantasy even had a mini-movement on the forums and people started buying Koihime Musou to show support for the company and what it was doing.

I didn’t know that much detail about the two of them. But it certainly seems like the content would be a problem. I can easily see that being the problem, then.

There’s a long history of very iffy products being localized into English. Pro Les-ring, Time Stripper Mako, Transfer Student, Sandwiched by my Wife and her Sister … It’s just Sturgeon’s Law. The problem is that the market is so small that large decisions about the future direction the market will take end up being made by games that aren’t the best example of the strengths that other games like it have.

I hope Hakukoi does well enough that the market for VNs can expand even just a bit. 50K units is not bad, especially for a PSP title that actaully shipped to stores at this late date … But it’s also not great.

Funny how Enzai is too “extreme” when most of them want Nitro+ Chiral games.

Theirs not as much extreme stuff in Nitro+Chiral games when compared to Enzai. Plus, Nitro+Chiral has story to back it up which neither Enzai nor Absolute Obedience has.

From memory:
Togainu No Chi: Optional gore bad endings and 1 scene in Keisuke’s route involving screwdriver rape (Keisuke’s entire route being optional and not required to unlock the true ending). The rest are fairly tame, Shiki’s is probably borderline at 1 point. (He gives Akira a bellybutton piercing, the act itself not being bloody and being over in about 10 lines.)
Lamento: Optional Bad ends (if i recall right the optional bad ends contain tentacles)
Sweet Pool: Arguably this is their only main extreme game and the one that’s spoken about least. But extreme is arguably what they were going for with the game…heck its about pooping out monsters and a guy who menstruates  . I don’t believe this one was that well received in Japan either, its the only Nitro+Chiral title not to recieve a fandisk or to have various official mini-games released for it.
DRAMAtical Murder: The most recent title. Contains nothing extreme, unless you count people dieing in certain endings.

None of the fandisks contain extreme content either:
Togainu No Chi Limited disc
Lamento Treasure Disc
ChiralMori (3 games based in alternate realities of the main games, features CGs and alternate stories. Togainu Poker + Lamento Typing + another Lamento block game i forget the name of)

No urination
No questionable aged guys
No wine bottles being shoved inside orifices…
No forced viewing of extreme content (cept Sweet Pool)
No S&M/Bondage
No forcing ones self on straight/curious/ect guys

Thank you person above me, I wanted to say something similar but you did it much better. Yes, the N+C games are extreme, but that’s in terms of gore (mostly just the bad ends), no underage prison rape and all noise. I’ve pretty much resigned myself to the fact that there probably aren’t gonna be any BL games coming to America in the near future. So until then I’m all right with my translation programs and fan patches (Togainu no Chi’s almost done!)
