Well, about the Tori game, I wouldn’t advice since it’s some creepy shota. It will definitely not please everyone. (Well on the other hand, nothing pleases everyone, but since Enzai is both violence and shota, and Absolute Obediance has a lot of genres including violence and shota, I would suggest staying away from anything involving violent sex and/or shota for a while.)
On my opinion, the best choice would be Lamento or Togainu no chi. Since the anime and manga are well known, the word that the game is to be released in English will spread quickly. (Even though I maybe wouldn’t recommend it because there’s a patch being released… Okay, I think piracy can be a good thing when responsably used, but if the girl who is doing it releases it first, some won’t bother buying it after it’s released in English. If she doesn’t get done in time, that poor woman will have spent YEARS translating in vain. Plus she’s really advanced in the process, that’d sure be a shame. And it’s really about gore and violence. I don’t mind it and with the popularity of Viewfinder, we’re apparently a lot not mindind it, but it’s not exactly for the fluffy fans and they’ve not been spoiled with games.
Also, despite the fact that I haven’t played it, Lamento is known for it’s strong and original plot. Plus I had a look at the CG and they were just amazing. That’s to a point where I would play it even if it’s boring just to look a the art. Plus the music is known for being good and the title is something we all heard about, it’s English realease will be spread quickly as well. Actually, it’s not completely without violence, but the CG don’t show that much of explicit sex scences or crude assaults, that’d avoid a massive turn off for certain fans.
To tell the truth, I think a lot of the problem is as well an obvious lack of communication between fans and the staff. It reminds me when a french manga editor aquired a bunch of licenses in a row. They made a poll to know which ones were those we can’t wait for, and released them first. If they don’t want to make a mistake, they just have to ask for title suggestions or make a poll with some titles to know which one is the most expected, then release it. How could they know what on earth fans want if there is no talk with them?
I must apologise, then. Sumimasen! Despite that, if they ever decide to go Yaoi one more time, they must do it that way too. It’s somehow true with more popular titles, but with something niche into something else that is also niche, you must know precisely what fans want to avoid a disaster.
Yeah, the problem is the two yaoi games they DID license were not very successful for them.
You can look at it and say “maybe the yaoi wasn’t the problem, maybe if we try a different kind of yaoi game it will be successful this time” … but that entails spending time (=money) and effort (= not doing other projects) on something that has a track record of not being successful.
Unfortunately, for every Mass Effect 2 (that eliminates flaws in the original and is more successful), there’s games like Conduit 2, or Iron Man 2; the reviews of which generally boil down to “sure, it’s better than the first one. Doesn’t make it any good.”
Niche industries like b-games can’t really do that. If games would sell twenty thousand units, then you could experiment on something niche, like a yaoi title, every couple of years to see if you find one that is successful. But they don’t.
If JAST could sell twenty thousand units, they would be able to license anything at all. Pretty much no eroge company would turn down the opportunity to ship another 20K units, even at a heavily discounted price.
If you’re a fan of BCyc – the old BCyc that made great stuff – then check out their first and only Rose Cyc series. It has the honor of also being the only Cyc game ever ported to PS2 and rates as one of their highest ranked games.
I’m rather surprised the company - being desperate as they are right now - hasn’t bothered making an updated renewal for it. Then again: Rose Cyc is like the forgotten and abandoned stepchild of the studio.
I’d love to see more Yaoi games, and good Bara would be very welcome too. I’ve seen pictures of Hunks Workshop and it makes me want to cry that I will probably never get to play it, as it looks so good.
Otome games are also something I’d buy if the game was good. Princess Nightmare is one I’ve heard great things about I would love to play.
I think the problem with the yaoi games already released is that they were hardcore and not focused on romance.
Enzai I loved the story, but a lot of people didn’t buy it because of all the rape, the shota content, etc. A release with a stronger romantic content would sell better to yaoi fans I think.
I think Hunks Workshop is being translated by two seperate groups so I guess thats a good sign. One of the groups plans on redrawing the cg and making an uncensor patch. I kinda want to play this game as well. http://vndb.org/v4679
