Not sure if Narg will review it, but as it’s one of my favourite eroges and I haven’t written anything for almost a year, I wrote down a few thoughts here. It’s difficult to describe how the scenario works, so to try and avoid any spoilers, I’ve erred very much on the side of caution.
I must sheepishly admit that I have not completed MK2 as of yet. Only about 85%. I fully acknowledge it’s one of the best BCYC titles, but the story type is not one of my personal favorites. Kinda hard to describe… knowing something is good, but not categorizing it as a personal favorite.
I’ll see if I can write a review for it in the future - still gotta finish that last 15% - as a personal challenge. However the game would clearly get +80 in the end. Just for the record, I think the following BCYC titles are outstanding must haves for anyone who enjoys dark ero… hell… even for people who don’t enjoy them (cause they might start afterwards). :o
* MinDeaD BlooD Complete Edition
Mugen Kairou
Gore Screaming Show
Extravaganza
Gun-Katana
Mugen Kairou 2
The following are “decent” titles the studio has made, but have huge glaring flaws that prevent true epic gaming. They aren’t bad games… just not on the level they could have been. Personally, I think they were rushed. 6 more months in development, and they’d probably have been epics. Especially Cthulhu… damn shame about Cthulhu.
* Before Dawn Daybreak
Cthulhu Omatome Set
I’d also like to classify Mushitsukai as worth checking out if you like Extravaganza, since Extravaganza is technically Mushitsukai 2. Never was a true fan of Yami no Koe, but I always hear good things about the original version and it’s remake from those who are. The various sequels and prequel are generally to be avoided however.
Thanks for the reccomendations. I have the Full Metal Box, so out of that list I’m just missing MinDeaD BlooD, with the Mugen Kairou series on its way. GSS was excellent, GUN-KATANA I got stuck on without a walkthrough and uninstalled, and I don’t think I’ll be touching EXTRAVAGANZA for a while. I love tentacles just as much as the next person, but I have to be feeling extra sadistic to play through that one. Although…speaking of MDB and GSS, anyone notice how similar these two look?
I believe it’s generally agreed by fans, that all BCYC games take place in the same Universe. However MDB and GSS have the most direct connections. Eri is also in GSS… and is often mentioned in other BCYC games: in Gun-Katana, Himena mentions being a fan of her music.
Timeline wise, I think GSS takes place a few weeks before MDB, given the spoiler character’s appearance and Yamiko mentioning about vampire rumors in Chisakura City. By the end of several MDB routes, the existence of vampires isn’t much of a secret anymore… :twisted:
Don’t remember the part with Himena, but I also remember that in Extravaganza Yumemi was a fan.
Actually, concerning Eri, I thought GSS took place shortly after MDB considering Eri’s mannerisms don’t seem to match with the kind she had during MDB. It seems regardless of the routes, Eri leaves the island (alone or not is debatable) and I figured each game would provide a little hint as to her growing popularity. I mean in MDB, Eri’s popular on Chisakura but that stems mainly from different (but obvious ) reasons, in GSS she seemed to come across as a standard performer at the club Kyouji and Aoi go to that’s being well recieved, and in Extravaganza Yumemi and Yuto talk about her growing in popularity.
The concept isn’t bad, but as they are 100% dialogue, the games are far too short, and are unconvincing as a result + just end up as a string of numerous, short H scenes. If tlwiki’s figures are accurate, Yami no Koe Zero is roughly 1/4 the length of MinDead (main game), and 1/6th the length of EXTRAVAGANZA. The original Yami no Koe complete edition has 6598 voice files, and as there are only 15-20 unvoiced lines in the game, it’s essentially 6598 lines of text, a lot of which are very short. Obviously it depends a lot on writing style, but I think you’d see at least five times as much text as that in a modern full-price eroge. I did finish one playthrough of Yami no Koe 3, and that’s even shorter and far worse than 1. Can’t even recommend them as nukiges, as some of the scenes are as short as four lines.
I’ve played it. High production values for the price, and very much in the same spirit as other games from the MinDead/GSS/EXTRAVAGANZA/Gun Katana line. It is short though, and the true ending makes it clear that there’s more to come in the next installment. They mentioned that the game had broken even soon after release, and now with a package version out, it’s probably been fairly profitable, so it’ll be mainly a question of when they have free time to work on it.
I know this is a minor quibble, but today, when I was replaying the trial version of MK2 for the umpteenth time, I realize there’s a bit of a coloring issue. Specficially, the color looks grainy, though the paper dolls are fine. It may sound like a tiny thing to complain about, but it’s especially noticeable when fullscreen, and I’m finding it hard to ignore. For comparison, the first image is a screenshot I took and here’s the same CG from another site.
Image one looks definitely grainer, at least to me, compared to image two. Is it just the trial, or does the actual game have the same lower-quality coloring?
So this new title is an attempt to tap into the monster girl trend. Courtesy of 2ch, I’ve attached a scan. No interest in the concept, and that combined with the problems Cyc has had of late, makes this a definite pass for me, unless it gets exceptional reviews.
Well the arts nice and I am kinda curious about how the horse girl would work :lol: but other than that theres not much to say about it. Story probably won’t be any good.
Surprisingly enough: yes I do. The BCYC Universe is filled with reality manipulators - Sayoko and Gore for example - so I’m of the mind that such a power is involved in Mugen Kairou. Of course who that force is… and why they’re so involved with the events in MK, opens a whole new can of theoretical worms. Seeing how there’s heavy implication that Sayoko’s powers are derrived from the mansion itself, it could be more of a what than a who.
My argument is that in MDB - no matter which of the main routes is canon - Eri becomes a vampire. Of course she’s a sentient freewill vampire like Shizuru (as opposed to a sexual beast or zombie slave like others tend to become), but a vampire nonetheless. Eri shows no signs of the changes, from what we’ve seen of her in GSS. I think the “stupidity” Eri demonstrated in MDB was either an act at playing dumb, or something occured between the events of GSS and MDB, which made Eri a sex idiot (doesn’t have to be supernatural - could be drugs). Because in Eri’s band had the whole “death rape” insanity occuring around it during MDB, I’m of the idea that Gore might have “kicked it off” somehow. Hard to prove of course, since we know Yuka’s ending is canon, and we don’t see witness Gore doing that with the club in that route. But then… we don’t see a lot of what Gore does anyways.
Well that might explain why it’s not a BCYC game. I can’t see this title taking place in the same Universe as the one MDB, Extra, and GSS do – even considering all the supernatural creatures that live in said Universe.
I know it’s gonna sound insane, considering how much I’ve bad mouthed the new BCYC, but I’m actually interested in this title. I’m a fan of monster girl releases, and as you pointed out, this has some really nice looking designs. Not like monster girl titles have plots anyways, so I won’t be crushingly disappointed for the lack therefore of. If Karen does the opening song for this, bonus. This is likely to be the most “big buget” monster girl release I’ve seen so far… most of the one’s I’ve bought are borderline doujin.
Spider girl interests me more than the horse girl.
