A bit off topic from engines, but I guess I’m the only one who actually enjoyed BDD? As a whole, it wasn’t great or anything, but I really liked the characters.
Don’t worry, you’re not alone as I enjoyed BDD as well. Could have been better, but I liked the characters, the music and artwork were good, the job choices thing was an interesting idea, and the stories for most of the routes ranged from decent (Leonora’s) to pretty good (Norma’s). The only route that sucked was Lyui’s.
I’m not actually sure Narg’s still around. Dunno if you saw in the other thread, but he took a job where he basically will have very restricted access for like a year and wasn’t sure when it would start.
They’re just cash cowing the last drops of their old glory. Most everyone who worshiped Cyc, already has two or three copies of the same game already. (I’m looking right at you MinDeaD BlooD).
Black Cyc is not desperate. It already died years ago. There is no BCyc anymore. Hell, Cyc in general is pretty much gone and and a shell of itself. The management change and talent exodus spelled it’s doom long ago. First the vanilla Cyc branch choked to death, then White Cyc, and finally Black Cyc. Gone are the elaborate eroge with intricate gameplay, detailed stories, or Denkare soundtracks.
Today we have Cyclet and Cyc Nonos… cheap one shots that are… well… cheap to make and easy to assembly line.
I gave up trying to figure out what the hell Cyc has been trying to do long ago. For awhile, I thought they were going for the monster girl fetish market, as the Poison Berry branch appeared to have been a bit successful and got attention, but that too was dumped away (reminds me of the short lived brilliance of Rose Cyc really).
It’s pretty much an eroge studio with no real vision or market ambition… just a generic “dime-a-dozen” releases that keep the wheels greased enough to keep turning for another cheap thrill. It’s like a zombie now… waiting for someone to just give it the dignity of true death.
So I just picked up this beauty from Barnes&Nobles, and I’ve been reading it like a man possessed since I knew sooner or later this would happen and decided to buy some Lovecraft when a complete edition was created.
Now that I’ve read some more stories of his, I’m curious about how he influenced GSS. Which of the Great Old Ones/ elder gods do you think influenced the creation of Gore?
Personally, I think Gore is a combination of Nyarlathotep and maybe some other eldritch being.
Can’t find the blog post that revealed it some years ago, but I remember the scenario writer saying that Gore Screaming Show was inspired by IT from Stephen King. So Gore is actually based off Pennywise.
Ah, I remember that, still even while they’re similar, I was never comfortable with a 100% imitation since Pennywise is the 100% ultimate evil in that universe if I remember correctly. His good foil choked to death on a galaxy IIRC. I just like the idea that at some point in the future (if everything hadn’t gone to shit of course) that Black Cyc would have introduced an even more powerful-perhaps the #1 most powerful-eldritch being in the universe. If he’s too much like Pennywise, then he’s at the top of the pile.
On the topic of Lovecraft, are there any games in the Black Cyc universe that are good, or in the corpse maid game that reference imply the Necronomicon?
I think that would be interesting and will be on my list to buy when I’m able.
Thinking it over, though I certainly agree that Gore is vastly more powerful than Pennywise, I’m hard to consider Gore a true eldritch horror of the Great Old One level. Case being, a true Lovecraft Great Old One is not directly aware humans even exist. It is so vastly alien and godlike, we aren’t worthy of consideration or value. It awakens, it’s vast power spreads across Creation, and we all die. Great Old One doesn’t even know it exterminated us. End of story. Gore interacts with humans, and considers us amusing and/or a delicious meal. In my mind, he’s more like a mischievous deity like Loki or Baron Samedi, than the likes of Cthulhu.
Not to revive an old thread, but there was apparently a side-story disk for GUN-KATANA which was included as a preorder bonus, does anyone know the romanization of it? ???
