That's because it unpacks it to a Japanese file name, so you'll need either JWin 95/98/ME or a program that will allow your English System to accept Japanese File names.

It depends on the adventure games... many of the ones brought over here have been the simpler ones, certainly, but just remember that's not necessarily indicative of the actual genre as a whole. Also, taking time by fighting bunches of wandering monsters doesn't add value to a game... or being delayed by a bunch of silly puzzles, etc. If a game takes longer because of actual gameplay and storyline that would be good, but using pointless elements to extend the gameplay time is a crutch that plagues the RPG genre and many others as well. Kumiko doesn't think you'll finish Snow Drop in a couple days... and certainly not Little My Maid when it comes out, or Tokimeki Checkin either. Probably not even Water Closet because of the secret paths within it. Gloria was very long - so was DiviDead. These are all games that actually have long gameplay value without resorting to silly pointless extensions - the gameplay length comes from game design and story rather than through somewhat "artificial" means. This is for the best, right?
I've pre-ordered all the games except Water Closet. I'm highly anticipating Snow Drop. I want to see why you think its so great.
well… actually there’s something that i don’t like about WC: F.C… the CGI style cuzz… hey! it’s not as good as the other game’s images… but anyway… i’ll consider about preordering WC… in fact… just to support PeaPri (so they will consider about traslating better image-quality games in the future)
Have you seen the Kimagure Orange Road anime? I always thought it was funny that all the really cool, romantic stuff happend between Kyosuke and Madoka. Even though he was Haikaru-chan’s “Darling” at the time.

Sorry to intrude here, but... If you liked KOR anime, by all means, get the manga. I don't regret each dollar I spent getting all the volumes. (Besides, it has served me as a reading tool! ^_^ BTW, it is Hikaru.
well… i think that i finally was able to guess what’s my problem with the CGI style of WC:F.C. it’s the hair style… yeah that’s it… it’s Ikumi’s, Shoko’s and Setsuko’s hair…it simply… tsk tsk… i don’t like it… maybe it’s as Kumiko said i like the hyper-kawaii style (and… that’s true! ) also… a little question why you will relase first Forbidden Chamber instead of Used Condom? cause as far as i know Used Condom was relased first than WC in japan… also Shizuka’s kimono is prettier than Ikumi’s and (for me) Used Condom’s graphics are a bit better than WC:F.C.'s ones

well… that’s a good point… many people use to thing that “bishoujo” is the same as “hentai” honestly i used to think that some years ago and this mistake comes with the piracy, cause many people only access to the “bishoujo material” in pirate sites so they quickly get familiarized with the term “hentai” or “ecchi” instead than with “bishoujo” and that’s cuzz in the pirate sites they only offer the explicit sexual images without explaining that there’s a history which is the origin of them… plus the problem that the bishoujo stuff itself isn’t as popular as the free distribution of the “hentai images” (actually i haven’t seen any bishoujo related page yet) so here’s it, the origin of all the problem… (before you say this Kumiko… i know that us the costumers must be the ones that promote the bishoujo on the net… and i’m thinking of doing that cuzz that’s the only way that the bishoujo market will grow here in america… but before i must play the games )

hey… this countdown is for Brave Soul right? what you want to mean with “trasnslation” is… that this’s the time that’s left before it’s available in america?
I have played the demo, so add my vote for this game. I have played both of the orginal Lunar Games as well the new ones that came out as well as the Shining Force games for Sega. I would like to play a bishojo RPG.
Anyhow, I don’t think it’s entirely fair to characterize “fighting” necessarily as a crutch in a RPG. If combat is cumbersome, it’s usually a design flaw in my opinion. Bishojo games may often give players different outs for problems, but it’s just a different approach. If you’re going to look at the flaws/merits of any RPG, or the “goals” of a successful one, you should consider where they came from: Pen and Paper. Back in the pre-dawn era of computer games (early 1980s), someone decided it would be clever to move the Dungeons&Dragons experience to the computer.
A Role-playing game in that sense, meant to be an “adventurer” to go on a “quest”, as some sort of fantastical/mystical person. In the pen&paper version, in good company, you -could- actually have any of those choices you mention Kumiko, solving problems in a more… intelligent manner, or conversely, pursue more physical means. All the while having what is some sort of social interaction with your fellow “players”, in the role you have chosen.
The problem then, lay in the translation. Obviously, unless a programmer wants to be typing till the sun bursts with a caffeine IV and horrible carpal tunnel syndrome, they can’t possibly cram every possible choice into the game. The solution, as it has continued to be for the most part, was to focus on the “heroics” part of the role: save the princess, slay the really evil demon, catch a fish… whatever, and maybe solve some puzzles along the way. This is a long tradition, be it Wizardry And Ultima in 1980, or…er…hrmm Wizardry 8 and Ultima 9 now.
These days, it’s become increasingly vague exactly what constitutes a “role-playing game”. “you’re a ninja… and you run across this screen, see? you play the ROLE of a ninja then, must be a RPG.” That’s not much of an exaggeration either. People can offended about it too, people get annoyed by Diablo being called such, or Final Fantasy being denied such status by others.
I’d say it boils down to this, by nature of the limited time programmers have, games will have focus. In most RPGs, this will be combat and adventuring. While you could say this is inferior as far as filling the shoes of your prospective “role”, there is a genuine attachment to a well-built, time-honed character. It’s nice to have attained power while playing the role. Other RPGs, say of a more Bishojo(bishojo-ish? no idea) bent focus more on the relations with people, and wether you’ll choose to be a nice guy/ a bastard/ or just a plain ole pervert .
As a final note, for those that haven’t dozed off. You can see games that are trying to mix elements more often in todays market (with mixed results, heh). Azure Dreams, is a playstation game that involves adventuring in a tower, as a means of winning the affection of various girls, also there was a something of a monster raising system in the game. I hated it, mostly because it moved slowly, and the action was horrible (bad for the Peach-Princess cause I suppose). Another, Baldur’s Gate 2, has a fair amount of character interaction, some romance, and adventuring… a good game, I loved it.
In conclusion, I think translating “Brave Soul” is a great idea. It mixes the action and character development, which is great. Along with the bishojo images I love.
…I’m not exactly certain we were really in disagreement there. I think I acknowledged life outside combat in RPGs, and the presence therein being a D&D holdover. Perhaps the comments weren’t directed at me?
I wouldn’t blame the “action-dominated mindset” on the American industry entirely though. Console games make up a large portion of electronic game sales in the US. Of these, most of our RPGs on the consoles are Japanese imports. This makes sense too. However big the Bishojo industry may be in the land of the rising sun, RPGs are truly a mega-industry. Such that companies such as Square and Enix were only allowed to release their games on holidays. Spell and monster names found their way into the vernacular. Mainstays from these companies also performed well here, but in the earlier days (of the 8bit Nintendo) RPGs were performing relatively poor, and thus many titles were passed over for American release. One thing you may say for their titles though, they certainly appear to personify the game-qualities you dislike.
I would agree that combat has nothing to do with being an RPG, it just appeared to coincide with RPGs in America. Also, I would agree that mystery, horror, action, drama, and sci-fi can also be the focus on a RPG. I would say that at least a couple of games have been released for all of the former themes (more than a few for action of course). The theme that is the exception of course is Romance. (which is where you come in)
It took some successful RPG (combat-type) games to get the ball rolling for RPG releases in America, and quasi RPGs like Diablo to help people make a crossover. I think as long as you release quality products people will buy them. (and from what I’ve seen your quality of work is -SUPERB- or I wouldn’t be typing here ). It couldn’t hurt to have some cross-genre games like Brave Soul though I’d think (and there is my tie-in).
then , here i come again! since the topic is about rpgs, i guess that i have to say…OPZZZ,i mean, “write” something!
just to point out, i have being playing those rpg-liked-games since they released those PLAY-YOURSELF-A-RPG-IN-A-BOOK…[those from steve jackson, rpg books with adventures for one single person] and i still playing, but i focus in CALL OF CTHULHU area[horror, ghotic amazing rpgs].
well, finished with the brief, talking about rpgs. i dont know about u guys, but i lived one year in NY and played rpgs there AND i noticed that ppl ONLY get happy when a COMBAT SCENE appear in EVERY RPG game[ad&d,d&d,gurps, vampire, werewolf, EVEN for console games] and thats sux since RPG IMO should be a game to THINK and act not A DAMNEC HACK&SLASH a 2handed sword on a orc or a dragon[btw, have u noticed how a group of adventures kill a giant dragon? man, i guess that they kill it attacking its feet or nail, ].
in pc games this STARTED to change with baldurs gate, it has combat, ok, but u can avoid without problem! the main objective isnt JUST KILL THE BIG BOSS AND BE HAPPY, u must understand what is going on.
in hentai area[or bishoujo, whatever] an example is KOX[knights of xentar] , man , the WHOLE GAME IS FIGHTING, damn, and they call it a rpg? geez, u dont EVEN have to use strategy or have variety of attacks and spells[very different from words worth, but i wouldnt call WW a rpg, instead, i would call it an adventure]…
to put it simple, rpg to many americans and others r just kill and get treasure[hack&slash] , some just DONT EVEN READ texts of it, so why they say they r playing a rpg? they arent acting like a rpg player…
however, who played that game REVIVE would be VERY happy about what is a game VERY CLOSE TO A PERFECT RPG… it has puzzles and ideas all over the game!
i wonder if doug realised just what he was starting with such a simple question. i think this has generated the biggest response yet. i think it show’s that there is a real market out there for quality rpg hentai game’s. looking through a copy of e-login it is evident that there are many more of this type of game just waiting to be translated into english and a ready and waiting market. let’s all hope this and many other game’s get translated and released over here (and/or stateside).
well… i think that Doug is finally achieving what he wants… keep his forum alive… so maybe chances are to someday in the future see Brave Soul released… so Doug-san… you deserve my respect… you’re giving your best shot to get the game you want… (not like me… cuzz i don’t have enough time to try to keep a post alive like Doug… tsk… tsk… anyway… someday i’ll start a topic for some of Sweet Basil’s games (Kumiko knows which ones) and keep that forum alive… nyah hah hah hah )
I personally started the petition to make everyone aware that Crowd was releasing an honest to goodness RPG. Since PeaPri is affiliated with Crowd and being an RPG fan, I’d like to see Brave Soul translated into English. I really appreciate everyone’s interest in the Title, both good and bad. I’ll be updating the countdown regularly until its available for translation. (30 March 2002) Unless PeaPri somehow works out a Snow Drop type deal and gets to begin work on it earlier than its expected available for translation date.
I loved that game. I must’ve been one of the only four people or so to own a TurboGraphx-16 (with the CD thingy). I had Book 1&2 as well as Wanderers…which was a pretty different game.
That was some really great game music, I used to play the game CDs in my stereo when I was playing other games.
I take back what I said about game music being disposable in that other thread…
hey nobody, about vampire games , ma, it should be the most difficult game to play, however almost all masters use just this kind of story: 1- u arrrive at city 2- u meet the prince 3- u get a mission 4- u fucked something up 5- blood hunt on u or someone else 6- u flee or kill or do diablerie 7- u got to another city 8- go back to 2
and this is the same idea of AD&D most masters! 1- u arrrive at city 2- u go to a tavern 3- u got a mission from the king 4- u fuck something up 5- hunters on u or someone else 6- u flee or kill 7- u got to another city 8- go back to 2
thats sux! thats why i love GURPS and CALL OF CTHULHU[and MAGE, but few masters has the guts or wisdow to master a MAGE game], they r the MOST DIFFICULT rpg games to mess with, so u must know the deeps from hell or the core book of mithys to play it, or else, be killed or be insane…
