English translation question

After completing ROOT’s “Yami to boushi to hon no tabibito”, I decided to play to some backlog games. And I remembered…
On April of last year, I bought at a very high price (20000yens while the MSRP was 3600yens) NekoNeko Soft “Gin’iro” upon its fame for having very beautiful and tragic stories
So, I tried it.
Aside the fact that I only tried it for an hour or so and that the story told during that hour was truly… intense, I also tried the English text and… How is CRC’s English? Because Gin’iro’s English is very very bad (I quickly switch to the Japanese text to fully understand and enjoy the story )…
OTOH, it looks like the CGs shown with the English text aren’t the same that with the Japanese text… ^^;;;;;;;;

Don't worry. As far as I can tell, the english translated text of CRC is okay.

However, the japanese seiyuus reading their text from phonetic scripts are another matter, but have also a certain charme... But you probably had a similar experience with the english intro-text of GinIro ("This is a little bedside story...").

Hey, now you made me curious. Which pictures differ in both versions? If you only played an hour, you are still in the first chapter yet, right?

(BTW: You are going to LOVE the second chapter! I can definitely guarantee it!)

Yep. The ones I recall:
  • when the girl remembers her condition in the brothel just before the guy "dared" her to take the onigiri from him. With the English script, you have a H CG more than in the Japanese script. OTOH, in the Japanese script, you have a CG for when the brothel's customer asks the girl her name and another CG showing the girl looking at the outside behind the bars of her room.
  • when the guy lowers his sword to hit the girl, in the Japanese script, you have in a flash a CG showing the girl sitting on the ground. You don't have that CG with the English script.

    Now, now, what does *that* mean? After giving me a rep. for being a lolicon, now you want to give me a rep. for being a sadistic?! Leave that rep. to Spectator!!!

    Thanks, I think that explains why I am still missing many CGs, even though I already played through the entire game --- in the english version.

    You played in English?! I thought you were quite proficient in Japanese?!

    Ah, okay... I thought it was because bad, painful, sad and overly tragical events were happening to the girls.

    Who knows? After trying to just tame the Unicorn, he may wants to make it soulbound to him?

    I am still working on my proficiency in japanese. My knowledge about the kanji still needs some work, but I currently manage to get through games with some help from NJStar...
    When I played GinIro about two years ago, I was able to understand most of the japanese voise-acting but had no clue about Kanjis, so playing it in japanese was moot. Playing it in japanese right now would be another story, though...
    However, I very much doubt that I can compare my proficiency in japanese with yours. That's why I am a baby-newbie!

    Really? Olf, would it be possible to steal-soul/cajole/threaten/amuse/bribe you into making up a FAQ on the differences? I can get ladyphoenix to ask if you insist...

    :D

  • I just finished the first chapter and, Lain-sama, was it… powerful. It’s weird describing why it was so enjoyable though…
    When I played to Mizuiro years (?) ago, I wrote in the GameFAQs board that it was weird I enjoyed the game, because, all things considered, nothing much happens in the story. And that everything was in the storytelling.
    I’d say the same here (well, “Gin’iro” precedes “Mizuiro” you may say ). Of course, the characters are quite unusual… Such a weird and fascinating couple: he who forgot his name and she who never had one; she who doesn’t know if she’s alive or wants to die and he who knows he’s alive by killing others; he who is how he is because he lost everything and she who is how she is because she never had anything.
    But still, how the story is told makes their story so fascinating… “fascinating” as I like to define it: you know how it will end and that you won’t like it, and yet you keep reading, with the insane wish it would end the other way…

    P.S. I completed the story in Japanese and English, and it’s weird because the story is told differently in both, with sometimes the Japanese version containing more “events” and sometimes the English version containing more “events”…

    Honestly, I can’t promise anything… foremost because I swore not to post reviews or the like on this BBS and because I don’t write FAQ. But, if ladyphoenix-sama asks me on PM while bouncing enough, who knows what can happen?

    Okay, then. Ladyphoenix, I will let you borrow the game if you get Olf to do this ;)

    ooh I can borrow Gin-Iro? I’ll see what I can do…although, what does PM stand for?

    Hmm…since Giniro suppose to be OOP any chance of it getting rereleased on dvd like so many other bishoujo games?

    I think Himeya might still have a copy or 2 of it. That's where I picked up my copy... it was a while ago... so they might be sold out by now.

    PM stands for Private Message.

    If you can't get Gin'Iro from him, let me know. You can borrow my copy if you like.

    On a side note, while the translation is... below average, it is kinda neat that the game at least started with an English translation. Which is a plus. Anyway, I would say you really can't play the game in one sitting... it's very dramatically intense at times.

    I shall set my email up tomorrow (yes, I've had the new machine for several weeks now and haven't moved my email over. I'm lazy. Well, and I'm a pool table mover. X_X)

    Agreed. I always played only one chapter a time.
    Particularly, the second chapter made me bawl my eyes out. IMHO, it's a rival for Kana.

    It had been rereleased at cheaper price on DVD. The original version went out-of-stock in a blink, the new version in a heartbeat!!! Hell, I tried to fetch one copy about ONE week after the official release date and had to buy it at YAJ at FIVE times its original price!!!!
    Perhaps prices went down since then...
    *checks*
    Yeah, there is currently one copy at YAJ of the original CD release, used version, for 10000yens.

    "Below average"?!?! It's just A . W . F . U . L . Even a non-fluent English and Japanese reader like me could probably do better!! ^^;;;;;;

    I only play to it in many sittings because I don't have enough time to play to it in one sitting... I though it was intense, true, but not up to the point you wouldn't be able to stand more... In fact, it's all the reverse: it's fascinating, meaning you have a hard time NOT keeping reading the story! o_O'

    Nope Himeya sold out a while ago or I would have already gotten it. Geeze if it sold so well I’m suprised they didn’t do another printing. Who’s the publisher maybe they’ll do a best of collection

    I just finished the second story and I have to admit that, though I found it very beautiful, it wasn’t sad and bitter as I thought it’d be. In fact, I found it refreshing and soothing to the heart and soul and felt glad and happy for Sagiri.
    I would even say that I somewhat envy her… sa* ehs saw elba ot esoohc reh htaed dna ot eid ni ecaep dna ecandrocca htiw reh traeh, luos dna dnim, gnivah dnuof a esoprup ot reh efil, a gninaem ot reh htaed dna reh elor ot mrofrep ni siht yalp dellac efiL.

    Oh, and there is a major mistranslation in this chapter!!! For people who would play to this game, “ijimeru” means “tease/torment/persecute/annoy”. In the game, they kept translating it as “spoil”. I think the idea is that of “damaging/doing bad things to”, but alas “ijimerarekko” that is “a child being persecuted (by other children)” IS NOT the same as a “spoiled child”!!! ^^;;;;;;;;;

    Nicely put. You have a way with words!
    Apparently, I still have to go a looooooong way, because:
