Haven't you Canadians already had your Thanksgiving celebration? Just be thankful Peter doesn't treat you guys like the staff over at TRSI.

Yes, the newsletter is early this week - but that's because for Thanksgiving, even the slaves at Right Stuf get their shackles taken off, their 2 mandatory cups of turkey gruel, and their 3 full hours of daylight.

Right here:
A Holiday Pack of Turkey & Gravy, Mashed Potatoes & Butter, Green Bean Casserole, Cranberry Sauce, and Fruitcake.

In a very odd form.

All must rejoice and pay tribute to the Turkey gods by ingesting thier mortal decendents on this day of feast Happy Thanksgiving!

What’s Thanksgiving?

It’s an American holiday that presumably celebrates the success of the English colony settlement at Plymouth Rock (I think this is in the current state of Maine). The English settlers were having a rough time, but thanks to the local natives they were able to pull through the harsh winter. The natives and settlers held a joint feast in celebration.

However, the original purpose seems to have been somewhat lost, much like Christmas. Now it’s just about turkey and stuffing your face. The overall theme remains the same though; you’re supposed to give thanks for all the things you usually take for granted, like food, shelter, and a loving family.

Actually, it's the Christianization of the Algonquin Harvest festival.

And the native was Squanto, right?

The meaning of Christmas has been lost? Depends on where/in which family you live. I still go to the church when it’s Christmas, for instance.

Somebody needs to visit the historical site of Plymouth, MASSACHUSETTS. There you'll find a stone that's been excavated from the harbor and marked 1620, the year of the founding of the Pilgrim colony [actually inscribed in 1859].

Actually, the original holiday was proclaimed by Abraham Lincoln on October 13, 1863 in the midst of the long and bloody War Between the States.
quote:
I do therefore invite my fellow citizens in every part of the United States, and also those who are at sea and those who are sojourning in foreign lands, to set apart and observe the last Thursday of November next, as a day of Thanksgiving and Praise to our beneficent Father who dwelleth in the Heavens. And I recommend to them that while offering up the ascriptions justly due to Him for such singular deliverances and blessings, they do also, with humble penitence for our national perverseness and disobedience, commend to His tender care all those who have become widows, orphans, mourners or sufferers in the lamentable civil strife in which we are unavoidably engaged, and fervently implore the interposition of the Almighty Hand to heal the wounds of the nation and to restore it as soon as may be consistent with the Divine purposes to the full enjoyment of peace, harmony, tranquillity and Union.
The Canadian holiday was proclaimed in 1957 by the Canadian parliament. As to why it falls earlier in the calendar year than the American holiday,
quote:
In Canada, Thanksgiving is celebrated on the second Monday in October. Unlike the American tradition of remembering Pilgrims and settling in the New World [sic], Canadians give thanks for a successful harvest. The harvest season falls earlier in Canada compared to the United States due to the simple fact that Canada is further north.

I hate Xmas, because

a) I'm communist

b) since it's tradition to eat lambs for Xmas here, i spend mines butching them and working in a sea of blood....

Eh...whatever. Maine, Massachusetts...same thing. Just another one of those New England states that no one can tell apart.

I hate it when I see people butchering the term Christmas into Xmas. It's Christmas, nothing else!

Xmas, ‘cause i cancelled that day from the festivities’ list on my calendar.

Oh, I see. Thanks for the list, Nandemonai, it was enlightening.

Well, Italicus, because of the above link, you’re contradicting yourself now.

Why? Don’t make me put blasphemies here… X for me is not the greek Chi, but the X for eXcluded, cancelled.

Do you recalle the Viking saga of the cristian that celebrated the heathen festivity of Jul ( hint, hint ) only to see his son - loyal to the old religion - in his house?

I meant in the way that you say you scrapped Christmas, but not Xmas.
And whatever you interpret Xmax as, the above link proves that it’s legitimate. You lose.
