? Are you sure about that? I've seen various people (none here, through) say that "aa" can be transalted as "yes" in some cases, and from what I've seen, that could be correct. Anyone can look up what a word means in a dict. However, you're supposed to look at the whole context to know which meaning is the correct one. So saying that "aa" expresses moaning or meaning "yes" isn't entirely correct. Look up words like "senkou" and "kikou" to see for yourself.

First of all, there are two entries in my dictionary, regarding "aa" (and both of them are neither "moaning" nor "yes").
However, I think "n" or "ee" are more usual as "hai"-substitutes with less politeness.
"aa" could be either an exclamation that expresses a surprise or sudden understanding, or ... darn, forgot that second meaning...

Hmm, let's see here... Regarding "aa" I was thinking of Aoshi in Rurouni Kenshin. He often just says "aa", and in all of the fan transaltions I've read so far, that is either transalted as "Yeah" or "Yes", so I throught that might be a correct meaning of it... Also, how you should translate a word depennds on the situation and the rest of the sentence, right?
