… and yet this world is supposed to be “mostly” good.
Sometimes I just want to give up. It really isn’t worth it anymore.
… and yet this world is supposed to be “mostly” good.
Sometimes I just want to give up. It really isn’t worth it anymore.
Its a gray world not a mostly good world.
I’d say black world… and it is becoming harder to give a damn about anything anymore.
There are way more good people in the world than bad. The bad ones just get more attention.
When someone sees a total stranger suddenly stagger in pain, more likely than not, two or three people will ask if they’re okay. Of course more will just gawk and stare… but that’s because they’re afraid of “bursting their protection bubble” than actually not wanting to help. It takes effort for one person with burdens of their own, to lookout and carry that of another… but society preserves. Hence culture and civilization.
By the way… can’t but help notice you’ve been kinda down the last few posts. Been in a run of bad luck?
I think the world is still existing because more people who are good. But then what is good and what is bad?
I think its more about values, if a person has positive values, then he is more likely to contribute positively compared to a person who is more inclined towards the negative side.
Remember Julius Caesar? “The evil that men do lives after them; The good is oft interred with their bones;”
Basically its what Narg said, Bad people get a lot more attention, even good people become bad because of one or two ‘bad’ things they might have done.
If people were truly good, the world would be a better place. Sometimes I can’t help but thing that “there are more good people than bad” is simply a comforting lie that we tell ourselves to struggle through the day. But I really wouldn’t say it is an issue of more good than bad, but the fact that the combination of apathy and outright evil is far more prevalent than any sense of principle or heroism. People really don’t seem to give a damn. The few that do either stand as the rare beacons of hope or are quickly smothered and trodden by the masses. The world might suck, but we have become comfortable with it… too many people are scared of trying to tame the beast. It might just piss it off.
As to the last question… does 12 years count as a run, or is that a flood?
Your just letting the media get to you. Crazy shit has been happening forever. I mean look at the cult slew in the 70s,80s.90s. And thats not even counting the stuff only in historical records.
The true danger to us all is environmental issues. Fisheries are strained, the ice cap is melting,a trash wad in the pacific, deforestation , mass extinction…etc.
Its like T.S. Eliot said, “This is the way the world ends ; not with a bang but a whimper.”
Pollution and over-population are a problem. I don’t see global warming as a real issue (never really have). Most problems in terms of the enviroment will stem from too few resources and too little space for this many people. It is astounding that the people who cannot afford, by any measure, to have children just can’t keep their dick in their pants. I look at some of these countries with billions of people and weak economies and resource capabilities and can’t help but laugh/cry at the stupidity of man. Yeah, I can’t already afford or even feed myself… so let’s go out and knock up every woman on the block and have a horde of children I can’t afford or feed…
And my pessimism doesn’t come from the media so much. It comes from reading history and seeing that for all the “progression” we have made, we are still the same fucked up world that we were 5 thousand years ago. Very little has actually changed: the rich get richer, the poor get poorer, and the stupid masses follow whatever messiah tickles their fancy, despite that messiah clearly leading them over a cliff.
Well remember that the function of life is to reproduce faster than extinction can claim it, otherwise it fails the hard way.
I have confidence that humanity will find a means to survive the problems it has made for itself. We are very resilient species. Sharks haven’t changed for MILLIONS of years. Neither have roaches. They ain’t got a lot going for them.
Unless a species advances where they can modify the environment around them in grand swaths like humans can, they’re doom to extinction. Roughly 50% of everything dies off every 50 to 100 million years, because the Earth under goes natural mass extinctions. So in all honesty we’ve got better odds right now than we did as ignorant cavemen. If humans lived peacefully with the Earth, we’d end up getting screwed by it. Our world is a pretty cruel place: watching wild animals survive is proof of that.
Human nature is shaped by environment: no child is born prejudice or filled with hate. A lot of what we’ve become, is because our own planet has made us that way… but of course as we became more intelligent, less of the planet has had a direct influence, and more of it has become ourselves. Time will test if we pass the challenge. And if not? Well… giant space rock would (and still could) end it all anyways. Sun explodes in another 5 billion.
It’s all gonna end if something can’t make it off the mudball or figure a way to stop the giant gas fireball from going boom. Don’t worry too much about human self destruction: Natural constant of the Universe leans towards normal death and destruction on it’s own. We’ll save ourselves or end up dead. Don’t even have to do it ourselves: gonna happen if we can’t fight the odds this Cosmos has set against us.
I ave to agree, apathy can sometimes be more harmful to the world than downright evil acts. People who actually need help never get any, and at the same time some people get all the privileges. Over time this yields in a society with a lot of negativity. Ultimately if we see history we will find that a lo of ‘evil’ people became so because they were treated that way, and because they grew up in a environment that wasn’t very nurturing.
So what we do as as informed people living in such a society? Should we shut our eyes to everything? Or should we join this race and become a lot more materialistic? or should we just learn to get along with the things in the society and concentrate on our well being only? That is a question we have to ask ourselves. And I think the situation is a lot worse is the third world countries, what’s with everyone eying the same resources and doing whatever can be done to get them, using political will and power? What’s with no jobs, children being born in poverty and undernourishment with so litle hope for the future. At the same time the head of the country has a big harem with new girls being added everyday  If I remember correctly the Sultan of Brunei lives in Gold, literally.
People fuck girls because that’s the cheapest source of entertainment and recreation for them. I am not talking about the people who have access to theaters and amusement parks. I am talking about people who barely make 1$ a day, even if a country has a high GDP per person, there is vast difference in income levels. Its much better if the government introduced methods to stop childbirth, say condoms at cheap prices. What’s amusing is some people believing children are a gift of god so we should have as many gifts as possible.
And the society has been built like that. There are always people who have power and want to keep it. And to do so they invent and fabricate, concepts of religious heads and damnation if you don’t follow them, rulers oppressing people with all their might. People are always afraid of change, even if they say that they want change.
Interesting views man. So I assume that you are in favor of finding another Earth so that we can inhabit it someday? don’t misunderstand, I am in favor of doing the same, but that doesn’t mean we destroy this planet on which we live.
World is inherently cruel, but whether it is unbiased or not is another question. And if I remember correctly the role if any species is to survive and reproduce, so in that case we are doing a fine job. Over population in itself is a problem, but not as much as centralization of power and some people abusing others for materialistic gains.
Genes do have some shape in shaping the person, it is a question of nature vs. nurture. and thats why religion and philosophy are such big tools. Imagine a child being told since birth about a certain belief system which may not be good in any way.
And the fact about human self destruction is like this, we need to find alternate solutions before we destroy ourselves, thats it. Eventually every system is supposed to end at one point or other, for humans specifically, not only should we able to live together amicable, but also we should try to have a more empathetic approach. doing good is just one part of the overall scene. Its much better if we mind ourselves and help others around us. I believe if everyone does that the world would be definitely a better place by default.
I don’t think we have to destroy the Earth to survive… and if we could save our planet to last forever, I’m all for it. For all we know, this could be the only planet that can support our kind of life form in the entire Universe. Be it divine intervention, alien pollination, or natural evolution: this world is the one humans were born on. It’s really ours. Even if we found another planet: the life there isn’t the one that “grew up” with us. They wouldn’t be our genetic and carbon-based cousins.
So I’m all for saving the Earth. However I don’t think we should believe Mother Nature has our best intentions. Only the strongest adaptive species survives: the Earth has made that perfectly clear. It’s not like we’ve always been on the top of the food chain. There’s a lot of evidence that shows great cats/dogs were our natural predators long ago… now we make them our pets.
That’s the least of our worries. As far as we can tell, we only have a few million years until the sun turns into a red giant. Depending on how much the sun expands, we either become a barren rock, or are completely consumed. Either way, it is going to become very inhospitable long before the sun winks out.
Hell… the laws of physics could suddenly just cease to exist and suddenly everything is chaos once again. Assuming the status quo is the only way to stay sane. Just look at all the shit that could happen: gamma ray burst, asteroid, wandering black hole, comet, freak stellar event, magnetic shift, super volcanic eruption, alien attack, biblical armaggedon, god sneezing…
We could die so many different ways and never it see it coming. Hell, we have probably only witnessed a mere fraction of the destructive capability of the universe. We have only been around long enough to not even register as a blip on the radar. Who knows what’s beyond the next horizon… maybe we’ll learn that the big bang was nothing special in the grand scheme was simply the equivalent of a rainy day on earth.

This letter is from the guy who recently suicide crashed his plane into an IRS building.
Now don’t get me wrong: I totally agree that what he did was an act of insanity and murder. However at the same time, after reading his rage, I can see why he did it. In some ways, he wasn’t totally off the mark either.
Man, what is the word coming to. I feel the more one learns, the more helpless one becomes. and is democracy ever implemented ion the right spirit?
Whatever that man did was wrong, but he had his own reasons for doing them

It’s damn hard to find good looking samurai miniatures for tabletop RPG’ing purposes. Spent an entire week, until I could find two that suited what I needed and was actually nicely made. So that others don’t go through the same ordeal I did, in case they find a similar need for their own campaigning:
