So how many here watch anime and read manga

You know, I'm trying to remember why I picked up Sugar in the first place. It probably was the opening song since I do remember it from the previews. You should get the full length version. It really gives the feel of an older style 60's song. (Or at least I think it's the 60's. I'm not that old, sometimes I have trouble distinguishing older song styles...)

Btw, Yoko Ishida is definitely one of my favorite singers. Or at least she seems to sing the anime songs I really, really enjoy. "Eternal Flower", "White Destiny" and the mentioned "Sugar Baby Love".

I don't believe the original Sugar series is airing in Japan anymore. I know there's a sequel either being made or airing where Saga and the other children are now a bit older. 17 or so I think. Since I'm not sure how Sugar ends, I can't even speculate what happens in that series.

The Do-Wop sound was created by black musicians in the early 50s. That together with the vocal harmony and synchronized dancing is a tribute to rock music of that era.

I struggled through the Japanese BBS on TBS's Sugar home page and learned that the series is no longer being aired except in reruns. In fact, the last episode was released on video 2002/7/25. There are 8 R2 DVDs, but they contain the same 24 episodes on the 6 R1 discs. There is one "special edition" DVD that came out 2003/10/24. I can't decypher the program content [2 talk inclusion of the first part and the latter part??]. The extra for that one is [Bath set enclosure schedule???]. I think episode 24 will be the true ending, however.

Domo, perigee-san. “Do-Wop” was the word I was looking for. (No wonder I always score low on music intelligence.) I’m surprised I was only a decade off. But I love how there’s even a spoken portion in the full length version of the song.

Hmm, all CDJapan lists about the special edition is:
"Contains 2 episodes aired on TBS network’s digital BS-i, in August 2003. Bonus feature includes “Sugar Ofuro Gangu (bath toy)” (expected). "

And yup, “Eternal Flower” if AYA. “White Destiny” is from Pretear. It was kinda silly, I was watching the Pretear DVD and I was kicking myself for not getting the soundtrack since I had just placed an order for several Japanese anime soundtracks (Especially with the yen gaining on the dollar, not sure when my next order will be). Then I finally remembered that it was on Yoko Ishida’s Sweets CD. I still will probably get the soundtrack or singles later. I like having both the opening and ending tracks for the shows.

Though off the talk of Sugar has anyone gotten all of the Chobits pencil boards? I just found out I have two and finally thought to put them together and they seem to be making a picture. I am just wondering what the picture is and if anyone has gotten all the different ones of which I assume there are 6 or 7?

I have just started to collect some of the soundtracks and find them almost as addictive as the anime and manga. What style of music is “White Destiny”?

Man those chobits pencilboards are the work of the devil. Forcing you to look everwhere for a chobits dvd with the pencilboard sticker on it. I think I got 1-2, 4, kinda gave up after that as it's soo hit and miss with pioneer's limited items. I much rather like ADV's little puzzle postcards they did with rune soldier louie(basically the same idea as the chobits PBs but as postcards). Heh sometimes I even get more than 1 postcard

I am starting to notice that, I did not even think to put them together or that the design on the back was more then that until I got one that said 'Chobits' on it and then realized they can fit together. They are that hard to find then and this is typical of Pioneer with such things?

I found something on an anime music site that shows we were both partially wrong (or partially right). It seems that Sugar Baby Love is actually a cover for a 1974 release by a British do-wop band known as The Rubettes. Funny, I don't remember ever hearing it. If you want to listen to a few bars of the English release, go here and click THE BAND link. Also, here's a nice fan page for Yoko Ishida. RightStuf is offering a $10.99 deal on Yoko's autographed Sweets CD, including Spring Field, Believing, White Destiny, Proof of Life, Eternal Flower (from Ai Yori Aoshi), Cuz I Can't Say,Yokohane 2 a.m., Broken Flower, Sugar Baby Love (from Sugar), The Door of Truth, Thankful. You can hear 40-second cuts from several Sweets selections at her discography page.

I’m unsure about Sugar… on the one hand, it looks really cute… OTOH, I might get bored with it. But still…

I’ll have to look into it.

I’m also thinking about getting that Yoko Ishida deal… that looks sweet (quite).

Oh and also at RightStuf, they’re currently having a special on Casual Romance Club for $58.99.

Interesting, a Japanese cover of a 70’s British Do-Wop band’s song? Why does that amuse me?

Er, not sure what style “White Destiny” would fit normally. Just Japanese pop off-hand. (Or techno-pop, which always sounds like a weird soft drink to me.) All I know is that when I first heard it, I definitely looked forward to seeing the anime. For some reason, it just reminded me of the feel I had from other anime op songs that I really enjoyed, like the ones from Magic Knight Rayearth and Fushigi Yuugi.

I know, that Yoko Ishida autograph is really tempting. (And the CRC deal as well.) I’m having a hard enough time as it is resisting the J-List DVD sale. If anyone hears any scurring sounds, that’s just my wallet trying to escape…

Only if you want blood and gore and mecha will you get bored. The stories are simple but not watered down like most TV shows and Sugar does have a plot and the characters do grow a lot. I found Chobits to simpler in story than sugar most of the time.

Yeah I'd say it's pretty typical of Pioneer's free goodies. They say the put extras in all the first pressings to incourage people to buy the dvds early but some of the first pressing doesn't have the extras. So people who want them end up going everywhere looking for a package with the sticker saying it has the extra. Almost every time a new pioneer release with an extra comes out there's a thread on AOD asking where they got one with a sticker. It's a pain in the ass if your a collector or a perfectionist. I'd much perfer they just charged us a little more for a LE release than this wheel of fortune system.

I ordered the AYA cd since I really liked the OP and I got the signed placard. Woohoo I'm such a sucker for LE extras. You know I would have got CRC if I didn't already spend $80 for it 4 months ago

I cannot imagine that this wheel of fortune helps their reputation at all, and I agree if they charged say 4 dollars more for a 'special edition release' or 'limited edition' whatever they wanted to call it, they would make more money and drive fewer people crazy looking for these things they desire to find.

Well, that’s good to hear about Sugar. I’m up for anything usually, but all anyone talks about in reference to Sugar is usually it’s cuteness. Nothing wrong with that by itself, but I have many similar shows already… but if the characters are well done, and endearing, I’ll give it a shot

I also ordered the AYA Sndtrk and got the Yoko Ishida autograph.

I also am a sucker

AAAAARRRRGGGGHHHHHH!!!

I already have the AYA and the Sweets CDs! I’ve so tempted to buy another just to get that extra. It’s bad enough that I already have several dupliate CDs! (The original Japanese version and the localized version usually)

Hmm, you guys reminded me. Now that I have all the DVD’s of Rune Soldier, I can put those pieces together…

Well, you can always preorder the Gunparade March Soundtrack. They'll still give you the autographed placard with that order.

I take it you either got lucky, worked hard, or every DVD released had one of the pencil boards for Rune Soldier?

Hmmm... I would advise against that, only becuase, the GPM OST is a pre-order, and RightStuf even mentioned in their newsletter that the autographs would probably be sold out by the time that starts shipping (the autographed placards are first come, first serve).

You could always re-sell or exchange the CD you order... just don't open it.

That's all I can think of.
