I enjoy Fruits Basket immensely. But I’m comming at it at a slightly different angle. I don’t look at it as a romantic comedy at all. (Hey, it’s my own take, I’m allowed to be disagreeable.) For me, because there’s no real discovering or pursuit of romantic love, it’s not a romance at all. I want to call it a dramatic comedy, but I always thought that term sounded silly.
The story is more about finding one’s place in the world. About finding people who accept you for who you are, as well as learning to accept yourself. For the most part, it isn’t about getting rid of their curse because most of them have accepted that the curse is part of who they are.
There’s only one member who’s trying to “attain their place in the zodiac”, because his curse animal is the cat. (I’ll look for a link later, but hopefully most people know the story about the zodiac animals and how the cat fits in.) He’s an “outsider among outsiders”, and again it comes down to finding people who will accept you. He thinks that he needs to become one of the zodiac to be accepted.
I’ll admit I’m having a little trouble with the manga though. The same problem I had with Ai Yori Aoshi. I’ve seen the anime first, and I like those characters designs better than the manga ones. Sigh I guess I should just be happy that I have the chance to see both the manga and the anime now, wasn’t that long ago where that wasn’t possible. (Although I wish I’d stop picking up Tokyopop manga series that sort of “stop” while we wait for the next volume for whatever reason…)
