So how many here watch anime and read manga

That’s a cool trick I did not know it would look for the games in English only with “quotes”, I thought that was just for direct title searches, like if you were searching for something about a given school you put that name in “quotes” so it does not return anything with the word school in it.

Thanks for tip and the link.

So, um, yeah. It was quite a while. It's worth it, though. The Eva manga is rather different from the anime. I like it.

Meant to ask this a while ago but forgot, which do you think is better of the two or is it a case of each being good in their own right?

Sort of as I am finding with the new .hack//Lengend of Twilight manga and anime release despite what other reviews might be saying about the anime version at least.

::rubs eyes::

There are parts I like in the manga better. The manga skips a lot of Angels, for instance, and the character interaction gets more attention. The manga’s better for it, I think.

Of course the manga is not finished yet. Who knows how it will turn out? They’re just now getting to the parts of Eva where it becomes less conventional.

In case anyone else is following the story about the MI release, Viz announced at Comic-Con that the street date for box set #4 is November 23rd. They also said it would be a limited edition available only through Viz and TRSI, leading to speculation that the rest of the series might be in jeopardy due to poor sales. See the AOD extended discussion for details. And pre-order the next box set to let them know you want it!

Yeah that sucks but right now it’s all speculation and rumors. I still have hope that Viz isn’t going to screw us fans over by not releasing the rest of MI again.

What’s the status of the MI manga, they just released volume five, or re-released it, they show through 7 for the smaller ‘cheaper’ copies but there are at least 14 right? Are all future re-releases in as much danger, up in the air, as the anime seems to be at the moment?

Also the DVD is now up for pre-order for those interested.

I don’t think the manga is in danger of getting canned. Especially since they already released the entire thing in the larger sized GNs. All the speculation that MI anime was gonna get canned came from Viz deciding to make it exclusive to TSRI and Viz store. There has been no offical announcement that the anime is canned.

No but it does seem to be in danger.

I have found a lot of sites reviewing the manga Vision of Escaflowne, but what I have not found is anything that tells me if it is one that can be understood easily by those that have not seen the anime, if it is written in such a way that even in retelling seeing the anime is almost a needed first.

Anyone that has read it do you recommend it to someone that has not seen the anime?

I recommend it to no one. The anime is far superior. The shonen version (at least the 1 volume I could put up with) was far worse than the anime that was made out of it. Virtually all of the things about the anime that are cool, were not found in the manga. In their place are far more stereotyped plot elements to replace them. (More appropriately, the stereotyped shounen plot elements were replaced with elements from the shoujo manga, and thus was created the anime.)

Thank you, when they kept comparing everything to the anime, even when saying good things, I had my suspicions but no proof, seems like proof was just given to me. Sounds like the anime might be far more worth it, thanks again saved me money.

Not a problem. Escaflowne is one of the great classics, I’d hate for it to be ruined for anyone by exposure to the manga.

Coincidentally, I’ve just started watching the anime. So far I’m having a hard time getting into it. Does it get better as the story gets further along? Maybe I just don’t care for the character design. Hitomi just looks so non-bishi.

… … you weren’t hooked immediately?

Escaflowne rocks pretty much from the get go. Yes, it does get more interesting as more of the storyline is revealed.

I’m afraid I have a big dislike for anything mecha. Huge, overstylized suits of armor with impossible weaponry just get in the way of the characters for me. And then there’s the thoroughly detestable Dilandau. I wish he’d been eliminated in his first scene, but I have the feeling he’s going to play the idiot braggart right to the end. Villians should be smart and have some redeeming qualities.

I bought VoE because it had the reputation for being the best of its kind. I did enjoy Magic Knights Rayearth, so I’m hoping these characters will grow on me the same way. It is interesting to see some of the love interests begin to play out.

I was never into mecha until seeing Martian Successor Nadesico when the whole genre just suddenly grew on me and lead to watching others like Full Metal Panic, Eva, and most likely now Escaflowne.

With intelligent villians I think, from a personal view, a part of the problem is most of the smart villians I have seen in places either intentionally or not come off looking almost like Bond villians, they are smart but always going striaght for world domination oftan via Japan and no step in-between. There are exceptions but at least to me that is one of the problems with some of these shows having smart villians.

[edit] I mean can't any smart villian be geared to revenge for something or going for something other then world domination?

Of course, you don't want me to actually answer any of these ... so I'll just make some nonsensical allusions to Excel Saga.

WAtch out for the combined Digi Charat/Fist of the North Star parody. It's great.

That would make them a Hero, not a Villian. Heroes often have revenge as their motive. To make it black versus white hats, you need to make it cookie cutter on one side or the other. And a cookie cutter villian is much preferable to cookie cutter heroes.

I thought the hero always went out for vengence, which seems a lot more acceptable then revenge to most people that choose heroes.

Speaking of Excel Saga is the anime as crazy as the manga? Only thing I have heard about the anime is the English Dub actress for the lead character had to be replaced when she strained her vocal chords, burned out her voice, about halfway through the shows.
