Back to Escaflowne for a minute…
Slight Spoiler Ahead
I’ve watched the first 11 eps now, and it’s starting to get more interesting. Up until now, the best part for me had been the Club Escaflowne extra featuring seiyuu interviews. The actor who played Allen seemed as vacuous and self-absorbed in real life as the character he portrayed. The woman who voiced Dilandau won me over with her comment that she couldn’t understand the popularity of a character who just seemed evil and insane to her. She played two other roles in the series, including, what I gather is Dilandau’s alter ego. Maybe he [she?] finds redemption in the end.

I don't know the manga, so I can't compare.
But if I call the anime just "crazy", it would be an understatement and not a slight one.
However, I don't know about the english dubs either because I only watched it in japanese with english subs...
Thank you, I had looked for information found reviews which were confusing, which now seems to be because the anime is well “unique” in it’s sanity, and the only thing that was not confusing what the information on the English dub VA who burned her voice.
Thank you for this information.

Escaflowne gets better and better until the end. Personally I didn't really like the ending but that's just me. The middle to a couple episodes before the end are the best in the series IMO.
There was a slight difference in the Onegai Teacher Manga and Anime, but I enjoyed both very much. I saw the anime first and I think it may be my favorite series. I then got the manga and found the slight differentiation enjoyable.

Try the series Onegai Twins only in well I guess it can be called 'novel' format at this time, it is interesting, and is suppose to be the follow-up to Onegai Teacher.
Yeah Onegai Twins, is a good read but it really doesn’t have much do to with the origional Onegai teacher. There are new main characters and only some of the origional cast is back in supporting roles. Mainly our lovely Mizuho sensei

That would make them a Hero, not a Villian. Heroes often have revenge as their motive. To make it black versus white hats, you need to make it cookie cutter on one side or the other. And a cookie cutter villian is much preferable to cookie cutter heroes.
The anime Rune Explorers has some interesting thoughts on Heroes and Villians.
[edit] Okay I checked and in the back of Volume 1 it does say Volume 2 Coming in AUGUST. So does anyone know why they delayed the release of the second Chrono Crusade to now sometime in October? That is around a two month delay.

Another main one back is Ichigo that has somewhat of a main supporting role in the first 'novel' anyway, not sure who from the original cast stays strong in supporting roles as the novels go along.
I just finished the Escaflowne series. The ending does give closure, and it’s not that bad.
slight spoiler It has one of those I’ll never forget you, rather than I’ll never leave you conclusions. I found the fate/good fortune/mystical power theme pretty confusing. They seem to have lifted some ideas from the 1950’s scifi classic Forbidden Planet. end of spoiler
This is definitely a series for those who like mecha and sword fights. Just not my favorite sub-genre.

So this series overall had a satisfying if not classic ending, or perhaps the other way around with some classic sci-fi themes outside of the mecha?
quote:Personally, I didn't find it all that satisfying. The sci-fi element was interesting, but IMHO not well carried out. In one of the Club Escaflowne extras they interviewed the creators. They seemed really fatigued with series, and it shows in the last couple episodes which feel rushed and a little incoherent.

Troubles in production I take it, or maybe things just did not turn out as they had hoped? That's too bad about the last few episodes though, never good to have the first few or the last few feeling rushed and incoherent since, as someone said, they are often the linchpins to the series.

I should mention that there’s a movie sequel to the series. I haven’t watched it yet, but I will. I bought it with the series during the TSRI sale, but if I’d seen the series first, I probably would have passed.
The movie isn’t a sequel, but more of a retelling of the story. Think of it as an alternate demension, kinda like Tenchi ova/ Tenchi TV. It’s still good but the character designs are very different and if your used to the tv designs the movie designs can be jarring or the other way around if you watched the movie first then the tv series.
In case anyone is interested about the Third Tenchi OVA I have just learned that FunImation, is going to be doing the dubbed production on it, as they are GXP at the moment, not sure if that is a good thing or not they have not done a bad job with GXP, just massively different then any of the movies, original OVA and the television show, all of which I think were done by Pioneer.
Yeah somehow they wrangled the tenchi liscenses from Geneon. I’m just hoping they’ll allow the origional VAs to reprise their rolse in the tenchi OVAs. I heard they were trying to get them to do the cameo portions of GXP.

The voices in GXP sound all wrong, they did not get them [edit=the original VA's] to do cameo voices. Washu sounds a little like Washu, but Sasami (who is spelled Sasmi for some reason in the VA credits and as near as I can tell is never called by name in the subtitles) does not really sound like Sasami, and Tenchi is also noticably different. Perhaps the biggest two massively noticable changes are Ayeka and Ryoko in the GXP dub. Mostly they sounded like recycled voices from other characters not in that episode, and they changed the characters far too for a GXP cameo, i.e. Tenchi a better cook then Sasami??
Whoever does Ayeka sounds like she is trying too hard to sound like the original VA (not sure if this is her real name but it is the credited name for the original Ayeka dub, Jennifer Darling) and it comes off badly, in and of itself it is not bad, but it is much more sounding of a fake British Accent then anything and it shows a lot on some words. Maybe if she just did her own version or if the other was not out there this would not be so bad.
Ryoko well she sounds more, instead of the original VA's (Petrea Burchard, again not sure if that is the real name) slightly gritty and husky voice (for lack of a better way to say it) the original VA had, GXP's sounds much more like the Noike(sp)'s VA doing double duty in GXP, either way Ryoko in this case is Mona Marshall, perhaps better known to some as Motoko Aoyama from Love Hina english dub and Minoru Kokubunji from Chobits if having a reference helps you imagine the voice better to compare it to the original.
Interestingly enough it is rather hard to find the credits for the VA's that did those voices in GXP or any voices in GXP for that matter. At that some of the characters or VA's seem to go uncredited such as whoever did Ayeka. Perhaps this is because, as far as I heard, none of them were FunImation 'in-house' VA's. Even though at the end credits they list all the VA's in the show they do not but list their respective roles. So it's anyone's guess as to who did what voices for a large part of this, as said only one site has listings of some of the voices and there characters.
Personally I think if you ever saw GXP you would shudder to hear how massively they changed the voices, I mean with the possible exception of Washu, they did not even seem to try to get ones that sound at all like the originals, and Washu might have been an accident. So with all of that in mind, I hope they can get the originals back for OVA 3 which they might be able to do it since instead of part of one show it would be six full shows.

I’m in need of a new anime. Anybody have, or hear anything good about Angel Tales? I’ve heard AOD’s take on it.
Also, I just wanted to bump this thread up, for some unknown reason.
