What is Most Important to You in a Bishoujo Game?

Well? What comes first when you think about getting a particular game? Good art? Lots of options? Good story? Romance? Twincest( :stuck_out_tongue: )?

Personally, the art comes first, immediately followed by an interesting story.

Story and art will both get me to buy games, because Iā€™ve got high quality art games with a story that is almost non-existant, basically just sex and the usual girl running away and the guy catches her and wins her over crap.

And Iā€™ve got games with great stories and art I donā€™t like quite as much, though itā€™s far from bad.

If there was a twincest game in english Iā€™d be all over it. Yuri as well.

I avoid anything that involves tentacles, and girls that look like creatures(Sensei 2).

Well, if we would only discuss english b-games here, I would have not much to contribute to this topic:
because english localized b-games are still quite scarce, I simply collect them like pokemons!

Huh? Growing backlog? Do you solved your problems with German Customs?

I wanted to get Sensei 2 but the frog artā€¦ ugh.

If it has good art but a crappy story, Iā€™ll play through all the endings once or twice then put it up for good (Virgin Roster). Iā€™ll play through a few more times if it has good art with at least a decent story (Sagara Family), and I am careful not to get games with bad art because I know I wonā€™t play it through even the first time.

In my case, what turn me on in bgames, in order:

  1. Good Story; (+6)
  2. Great, deep characters; (+5)
  3. Suspence, Mistery and/or Romance; (+4)
  4. Funny Comedy; (+3)
  5. Good graphics; (+2)
  6. (Re-) Playability, Omake, Animation & 3D; (+1)

What turn me off, in order:

  1. Full yaoi game; (-20)
  2. Some Yaoi, Yuri, dickgirls & pornchild elements; (-10)
  3. Monster-Tentacle & bestiality; (-8)
  4. Rape, S&M, Humiliation & Scatollo; (-6)
  5. Porn, poitless sex, gangbang; (-4)
  6. True, full Incest; (-3)
  7. Shit story and bad characters; (-2)
  8. Bad graphics; (-1)
  9. Completely Linear game, very few choices/options; (-1)

I will not play anything with less than +2 points, in my P.O.V.

EDIT: I just redid the points i gave because i was trying to be fair and not so picky, but i just realized thereā€™s no way i could take a full Yaoi game. Sorry PeaPri!

In a good game are important:

a) a good story
b) a fine artwork
c) deep characters

What makes a bad game:

a) a senseless and mindless fuking story
b) the harem route
c) an awfully bad charactersā€™ design

If the game has more complex gameplay than an ADV and a decent story, Iā€™ll be all over it!

If it has a good story Iā€™ll get it too.

Inexistent story? If I like the art, the girls, and itā€™s not dark, maybe laterā€¦

If I used a scoring system like you, Peter, it would be quite similar.

  1. Great/Good Story; (+9/+7)
  2. Great, deep characters; (+5)
  3. Suspence, Mistery and/or Romance; (+5)
  4. Funny Comedy; (+3)
  5. Good graphics, Animation; (+2)
  6. Replayability; (+2)

What turn me off, in order:

  1. Shit story and bad characters; (-10)
  2. Yaoi, Dickgirls, Yuri; (-7)
  3. Monster-Tentacle & bestiality; (-6)
  4. Porn, poitless sex, gangbang & Scatollo; (-5)
  5. Rape, S&M, Humiliation; (-4)
  6. True, full Incest; (-3)
  7. Bad graphics; (-1)

I think my minimum would beā€¦+1 but I guess it depends on other factors tooā€¦like mood and whatnot.

Iā€™m more interested in story and writing. The quantity and quality of h-scenes isnā€™t really that big of a draw because such things are essentially interchangeable; you donā€™t even really have to have a game translated if thatā€™s what youā€™re looking for, if itā€™s voice acted.

So if it had a good story (+6), great, deep characters (+5), suspence and whatnot (+4), good graphics (+2), playability & anaimation (+1), but had yaoi (-7), beastiality (-6), true full incest (-3) youā€™d still play it since itā€™s +2?

Did you EVER saw any erogame with yaoi and bestiality, but with good story and great characters, too? I know i never saw any. Probably they donā€™t existā€¦ :frowning:

Maybe i need to rethink the points i gave aboveā€¦

[ 09-27-2006, 08:20 AM: Message edited by: Peter Gilis ]

You think?

Yeah. Thatā€™s what i got trying not to be so pickyā€¦

[ 09-27-2006, 08:57 AM: Message edited by: Peter Gilis ]

Hmmmmmmā€¦hmmmā€¦hmmmmmmmmmmmmmmā€¦HUH?!Okay, Iā€™ll postā€¦

Anyā€¦That has art to my likingā€¦and a good story with a little comedy and dark approach.

Hmmmmmā€¦Games with a love-comedy would be nice.

So you would be interested in a rape comedy? :stuck_out_tongue:

Mehā€¦ I thought a rape comedy would be funny until I read both Tomoyo42 (by Dan Kim) and Jewel Knights Crusaders. oh, and not to mention Idols Galore.

I just canā€™t find rape funny. Maybe becauseI find it to be a very serious and evil act that canā€™t really ever be justified. Even when itā€™s taken in a light manner under impossible and nonsensical relations (like in Tomyo42), I still canā€™t find it funny. I suppose some people can, but I canā€™t.

Even if I were to play a game that had rape in it, I would prefer that the game that had both a good story, and negative repercussions resulting from the rape. Crescendo gave me that, and so did Gimai Hitomi.

Nandemonaiā€™s statement is the closest to what I usually go for, but, for the record:

Hereā€™s my list, not in consecutive order, which isnā€™t too different from Endymionā€™s:

  1. Good to Great stories (+7)
  2. Following no. 1, a bonus point(+1) for at least one literature/philosophy reference in a visual novel and eroge (like Schopenhauer in Crescendo and Dostoyevsky in Gimai Hitomi) and/or an attempt at a philosophical outlook (Kana)
  3. Innovation of some sort (+6) (can be anythingā€¦ a flowchart, points system, an explanation into cultural peculiarities, et cetera et ceteraā€¦ heck, even brave SOul was a good example of this: it was unique in the American market by being the only one of its kind for now)
  4. Genre exploration (+5): more than just drama/romanceā€¦ critical point was a good sci-if story, Private Nurse had a tinge of the supernatural to it, and Gimai Hitomi was a dark psychological thriller.
  5. WRITING (+6) I have to give some high points for thisā€¦ having been a bookworm (and I still read), any visual novel that at least puts effort into its text is a definite plus. The emphasis should not just be on pictures, esp. if there is a complete lack of pictures (Idols Galore comes to mind for a story that alcked writing AND CGs, whioel CHain is a agme that, though lacking multiple pathways, played like a real detective story)
  6. Mutiple endings, pathways, and sudden twists and turns(+4): In the quotes of Edmudn Blackadder, the eroge should be like Edmund, a Butlerā€™s Tale: ā€œa rollercoaster of a novel, packed with sizziling hot gypsies for good measureā€. Choices one take shouldnā€™t be too linear, and shouldnā€™t be stupid, but land you in situations you completely cannot expect at all (Examples: Critical point, Sagara Family, Kanon, Private Nurse, etc.)
5.Deep, good, engaing Characters (+3): Understandbly, I should have given this a higher mark, but, noting that the genre anā€™t always match up to that of the non-H market (which means the vast field called Literature), I usually donā€™t expect too much. Until a day comes when I find the likes of Edmund BlackAdder, Arthur Dent, Simon (from the Lord of the Flies), Haruhi Suzumiya, Lain (from Serial Experiments Lain), Benimaru (KOF), Nietzscheā€™s Zarathustra and so on and so forth ad nauseam, I wouldnā€™t really expect too much. Understandably, I have found a few unique characetrs in eroge, but, bearing in mind there roots, having them mix up with my other non-H chaarcetrs in my mind is justā€¦ unseemly (and yes, I have an over-actvie imagination)
  7. Replayability (+2): This one isnā€™t that important for me, sicne I donā€™t usually replay the games unless, unless, the game has completely differenet pathways, or there si one path that really gets to me.
  8. Graphics (+1): Being bad at art myself, I donā€™t usually give high points for thisā€¦ unless they use stick drawinsg or art that a 10 year old could pull off.
  9. Oh, and a bonus point for any ā€˜dating simā€™ Diversity (+4): The choices have to be reasonably diverse. While I didnā€™t like Lets Meow Meow, each of the characetrs were reasonably different. Crescendo was a stellar exaple, it had three stereotypical choices, two unique choices, and one choice that had to be unlokced, and the two unique chocies are really worth it. Also, while I donā€™t usually go for yaoi, if there is at least one yaoi chocie in a game, or a chocie where I can get to be another guy, than I wouldnā€™t mind it.
9 One last bonus pointā€¦ good, consensual, romantic sex if itā€™s an eroge (+5). At least one scene would suffice, even if itā€™s a dark game. With that in mind, this is one of the few saving points for Gimai hitomi, and this where Crescendo is the true leader.

Now for the bad pointsā€¦ note that, I have nothing against yaoi, even though Iā€™m not a fan of it as Iā€™m not one for homosexual sex, so I leave it out. Iā€™m not adverse to seeing it, though.

Hereā€™s the bad points list:

(1) 100% complete lack of plot unless for a humurous, postmodernist reason (if there is one)ā€¦ a definite (-7) points, as I usually go for story. Examples: Idols Galore, jewel Knight crusaders (the latter was supposed to be a parody, but, I donā€™t know whther it was meant to be postmodernist or not)
(2) Pointless sex and pornucopia (-6) : this is a major turn-off for me. Something like the very first blowjob in ā€˜Lets Meow Meowā€™, the rapes in Idols Galore & JKC, and the fact that you get into a rather sticky situation with all 5 horny bunnies in the first game before settling for one isnā€™t my kind of thing at all.
(3) Polygamy and amority (-5): I donā€™t like ahrems. A personal preference, but, itā€™s too unralistic. And itā€™d be worse fi the game degenrated into a fanservice orgy for otakun.
(4) A complete prick of a protagonist (-4) Never mind of the girls are cliched, Iā€™m used too itā€¦ if the protagonist is a complete bastard, for no real rhyme or reaosn, and doesnā€™t really chnage at the end of the story, or the change is a bit half-hearted and without reason, or if another side fo the protagonist is not displayed, I wonā€™t touch it. This is the reason why I was willing to try Tsuki and Gimai Hitomi, but not Virgin Roster, and Gibo had one saving grace in the form of the Sheena path.
(5) Overly vanilla flavour (-3): Thi one isnā€™t so bad, but, anythign that is too sweet is usually mass produced. Heck, it wouldnā€™t even need sex. Anyway, all stories need a conflict that is visible and one can actually feelā€¦ if there is none, or if it is non-existent, it wouldā€™t be engaging.
(5) Focus on CG alone (-3); if the game is more focused towards showing off its CGs than the plot, than this problem arises (aside from the use of enemas and extreme sex, Tsuki seemed rather vanilla.
(6) Linearity and lack of repalaybility (-2): I donā€™t usually have a problem of this. While I prefer really diverging paths, if the story told is reasonably good, i donā€™t mind reading it again. Unless, of course, the choices it gives are the ones only Johnny Bravo can get wrong, or if the storyline is basically the same half the bloody time (this is one of the few problems I ahve with Kana, since itā€™s a bit linear in that respect. I foudn it hard to replay the game, and would usually play it again for a different ending after some time had apssed)
(7)Bad artwork (-1): Again, I donā€™t usually place an emphasis on this.

A few additions:

Completely dull characetrs to a fault would get a (-2) for meā€¦ esp. if all the girls are head over heels for the protagonist for no real rhyme or reason, or if the reason doesnā€™t really seem to fit. Additionally, Iā€™d add a (-2) mark if there is a possible harem scenario, or if the protagonist does end up banging them all before settling for one of them. The Sagara Family would come dangerously close to this if it wasnā€™t for the fact that you there is an actual good, 99% non-H path for this game (where you end up banging only Maria, which aside from being a Zyx trademark, could really happen to anyone. No, seriously). Then again, I havenā€™t tried looking for a 99% to 100% non-H paths for both of Sekilailaā€™s COme see me tonight games, but, if those games, and other games, had such paths, where the player can actually choose not to bang anyoen of these girls, then Iā€™d reconsider the mark.

Rape is my main major turn-off as far as sex is concerned, aside from dickgirls, scat, and the like (-4) I have no real liking for yaoi, since Iā€™m not a fan of homosexuality, but rape really bothers me. At the same time, the futanari dickgirls are too damn unrealistic and are jsut an excuse for extra body fluids. Oh, and scat is also a bit disgusting. Noting that, I donā€™t go for both yaoi and yuri, but would have no prblems seeing both appear (in fact, if there is yuri in any game, Iā€™d prefer it if itā€™s balanced out with some yaoi. Gender equality !)

~

A few more bonus points, this time positive:

(+1) Presnce of a good, non-H path in an eroge.

Aside from a gay path, the presence of a path that doesnā€™t force sex on the player is good. Private Nurse does this well, and so too does Crescendo (aside from the very first Yuki scene)

(+1) Presence of comedy thatā€™s resaonably funny, and cute pictures

I kinda like the Ryo holding the fluffy bunny in the first Horny Bunny game, and the duo of Perpera and Itome from private Nurse were one of the best comic reliefs Iā€™ve seen.

(+3) Awesome, romantic pictures

Iā€™m sure everyone knows of the Ayano/Hiro-chan embrace at the end of Private Nurse. Soemthing like that. Other a meaningful embrace on a bed, or in a sunset. Sure, its cliched, but, if the story told is reasonably good enough, thereā€™s no better way to end it than with a romantic sunset.

And, very lastly

(+2) for sex that is palced strategically well in the story, and relates it too well.

Surprisingly, kana scores the mark for me, even though the sex canā€™t be avoided, as it was a reflection of Yumiā€™s character. the same goes for Crescendo for obvious reasons. private Nurse is another example, as the sex is a reflection of the maturing of a relationship, akin to Crescendo.

~

And thatā€™s about it. As you cans ee, my points absed system lacks structure, and I need to rework it, but Iā€™m willing to hear anyoneā€™s suggestions cocnerning this.

I donā€™t use a point-based checklist. Itā€™s too inaccurate in my opinion.

Same here; I donā€™t like rape either. My rape comedy statement is a contradiction of words, and I like such plays on words which is why I said it. I have created a different thread which discusses rape in b-games.

I seeā€¦ I also admit that i didnā€™t see it as a wordplay.

~

LOLā€¦a s one cans eeā€¦ my check-list demonstrates the potential inaccuracies. I donā€™t like the system myself.
