This is actually a (I believe diagnosable) variant on obsessive-compulsive disorder. I saw a thing on TV about it once. At the end they did a “a couple months later we followed up on this story, here’s this update” thing. The guy was like “I watched the show. It wasn’t until I saw myself on camera – where I stopped the interview when I saw a dumpster, and rooted through it – that I realized I am a disgusting person who has a problem. Until then I didn’t want to stop.”
According to the wiki on compulsive hoarding, there is " no definition of compulsive hoarding in accepted diagnostic criteria (such as the current DSM)". Also (according to the wiki), while it isn’t “clear whether compulsive hoarding is a condition in itself, or simply a symptom of other related conditions”, “several studies have reported a correlation between hoarding and the presence and / or severity of obsessive-compulsive disorder (OCD)”, as well as also being “related to obsessive-compulsive personality disorder (OCPD)”. In addition, “there may be an overlap with a condition known as impulse control disorder (ICD), particularly when compulsive hoarding is linked to compulsive buying or acquisition behaviour”. Furthermore, “those diagnosed with attention-deficit hyperactivity disorder (ADHD) often have hoarding tendencies”. Despite all these connections with the mentioned conditions, “some people displaying compulsive hoarding behaviour show no other signs of what is usually considered to be OCD, OCPD or ICD”.
In this particular case, thanks should be given that what is being hoarded are things. It could have been the much worse instance of hoarding that involves animals.
Coming from a family that displays some hoarding tendencies (though, thankfully, being exhibited in a way that isn’t dangerous like that poster’s mother), I’m grateful that the way it manifests within myself is non-destructive. That is to say, instead of having a tendency to be a hoarder of things, my tendency has been channeled in to being a hoarder of data (e.g. I still have saved email from February of 2001). Thankfully, since hard drives keep getting bigger, its not that much of a problem.

While this is great news, the nanotech news I’m really waiting for is when they figure out how to make ultra-strong cables out of carbon nanotubes that are long enough for such uses as a space elevator. From what I understand, they already have figured out the basics of how to make the fibers that compose such a cable. The problem is in making them long enough for practical use.

I mean, I like fiction (and fictional characters) as much as most of the other people here, but let’s get real. There are two choices. One, admit you like the “2D world” world better, and accept the consequences. Specifically including the withdrawal from the real world, meaning that you’ll be a loner. Two, look at what you want (a wife, friends, a community, whatever that might be) and face up to the fact you’ll have to change things around to get it.
All he’s doing is trying to avoid having to make that choice. It won’t work. Even if he gets two orders of magnitude more signatures , it still won’t happen. And if it did happen, what would it mean? Nothing. This is like the scene from Life of Brian, where the revolutionary tries to get it added into their platform that men should be able to have children. “What’s the point of defending his right to have babies if he can’t have babies?”
