Dark Translations

Meh, i just don’t care. Seeing how The Dark Knight is a pretty dark movie and i was totally absorbed into it, i have no problem dealing with dark games either. Hey, i can stand even School Days

@Darkstar

Point taken, lol. I guess YMK is a dark game (or at least not a “light” eroge), i’m not about to replay it though, because I didn’t really like the other two characters at all. And wasn’t even aware that his sister has a route O_o. Looking back there was def some (drug induced) rape, mind altering substances, suicide attempt (with a hint of murder), depression etc goin on there. But I think the reason I considered it a light game, was the main character was a nice guy, and it was the girl(s) that was/were nuts or had bad intentions. And the whole happy ending thing obviously. But it’s not written anywhere that the main character has to be the genre defining character.

Unkind, there isn’t a path with the sister. She’s a tease character. I’d erroneously posted her name. And that is what I’m interested in— how some games are viewed “light” and some are “dark”, even when they can hold the same elements. What is that we, the community, use to personally define a game as “light side”, “dark side”, or something else.

papillon, that’s what I wanted to discuss. Some time back, I thought we’d established that to be a light side game, it had to have no rapes or at least, no such nasty things done by the hero to others. But the way it was tossed out as “ok” in Crenscendo, made me think I’d been mistaken in “Light side versus Dark side” game standards that were settled on by the light siders. I personally think such acts should only be in “dark side”, but this being eroge, it is often used to establish “sex is now part of the relationship”, which I find to be a the worst possible writing device to introduce the characters having a sexual relationship. I don’t have any problems with a rapathon game, so long as I know it is meant to be that when I start playing it— but if I think it’s supposed to be a light and fluffy game and it tosses out a few rape events just to get the significantly cute NPCs, who all show signs of being infatuated, crushing, or at least intrigued, with the hero, that is VERY upsetting. Which is part of the problem JKC had on its release— it is a light side styled game, except that it has a high rape count. That’s what keeps it out of the “light game” listing— and IIRC, the only thing — as long as you are also tolerant of a loli character “having relations”.

JKC spends the majority of its time clearly in fuzzy, feel good light side territory. If I recall correctly (I might not, it has been years since I last played it), other than that first “forcing” event to get the player and the ladies started, on 2 of the available 4 ladies’ path, there is no more such events. In JKC, all of the girls are actually protected from most to all of the downside of those “forced” events by their “magic”. Their personal drama due to those events comes from, for instance a conflict about feeling like they are cheating on their sweetheart because now they like two guys (and no proper woman could EVER like two guys at once— hence the mental anguish), or because she isn’t so strong that she can fight every bad guy in the world at once by herself and so she still needs help (she wants to be the uber super saiyan living god of war). Yeah, it’s poor writing, but most eroge are equally terrible in their writing (hence, our enduring love for the better written ones).

So, JKC is not a proper light side game— but it is certainly tries to be very close to it. Most of JKC is “marshmellowy fluff”, but the “time for sex!” scenes are not limited to sweet scenes of two people who like each other, and the game insists on “lots of sex”.

I suppose we could call it (and games like it) a “Beige Side” game? Although I do like your description— I suppose you’d call it “Stupid side”.

nod And I wouldn’t call YMK either light or dark… just good.

It’s not aimed at the dark fetish, it’s certainly not fluffy candy, and it can be disturbing at times.

That’s got to be one of the stupidest things I’ve ever heard. I really think it’d be better if it were the Let Parents Think of the Children, and We’ll Stay the Fuck Out of Everyone Else’s Business Banner.

That would require parents actually taking responsibility and raising their own kids instead of counting on the government to raise them. That would require effort, and we wouldn’t want that, now would we?
Sarcasm aside, there are many harsh criticisms regarding the government of the UK that I could talk about, but I’d rather not open up that can of worms.

Actually, that isn’t the problem. The problem is that our society is structured so you cannot lock up your kids and control every second of their lives. What with having to send them to school and take them outside (and most families having to have both parents, when the mother has a steady in her life at the time, having to work to afford to live), that is what creates the problem of “save the children from bad things!”.

Consider that even where you have a family structure that allows for one parent to spend full-time with the kids, something as simple as taking your kids to the park could expose them to dangerous non-parent approved thoughts and concepts (ie, two people having sex in the park— or just an “over the edge” advertisment on a billboard) or danger (wild dogs running loose, attacking small humans).

All human societies purpose is to continue to exist. One of the primary way they do that is by insuring children are taught the proper concepts and behaviors expected of them, and insulating them or demonstrating why non-approved concepts and non-approved behaviors are bad or punished. We humans will stop caring about “the children” when we no longer have them or raise them (ie, artificially created and raised by nanny-bots). Until then, we will have to put up with the worsts stupidities “for the sake of the children”, and keep an eye out for humans using that as cover to control other behavior or for their own personal gain in power.

In some cases, it’s a fault of too much information, not enough common sense.

Many many times, you’ll see a panic start about an issue that, examined properly, isn’t actually an issue. Like shark attacks. One shark attack in the news will trigger panic attacks and worries about what we might need to do to save ourselves from the horrible danger… even if such attacks are extremely rare and about as likely as they ever were.

But with so much information on tap, we tend to feel like we can control everything, if only we try hard enough. Clearly, that swimmer’s parents should have been aware of the danger of shark attacks and avoided that beach! Clearly, we should be aware of every possible threat that could ever occur and act to prevent it!

Not only does this build stress and paranoia, but it also contribute to a nasty sense of moral superiority over anyone who suffers a misfortune. “If they were good parents, this wouldn’t have happened.” Sometimes that’s true, often it’s not, but people eagerly pass judgment anyway. After all, surely the parents should have been able to find all the relevant information and make all the proper choices!

Listen to the endless high-pitched screaming of news reporting over, say, foods and disease. One day all vegetables cause cancer, the next day they cure it. One day eggs will give you a heart attack, the next day not eating eggs will make you bald. It is literally impossible to follow all or even most advice given on foods, but as soon as you come down with some disease, someone will immediately tsk at you for “not eating right”. Because you MUST have been doing it wrong, or you wouldn’t be sick!

The horrible truth is, sometimes bad things happen to kids. If you let them play outside, some of them will be run over. Some of them will fall out of trees and break their necks. Some of them will be kidnapped by two-legged monsters. If you don’t let them play outside, something else can go wrong. None of these things necessarily mean you did something wrong, sometimes bad stuff just happens and it’s not your fault. But people want so desperately to believe that they can make the ‘right’ choice…

Asagi 2 seems to be going fairly quick
according to today’s update, 8/22 files are done ( 1-6 already edited )
35% currently ( 8/22 is really 36% though ).

Translation is estimated to finish around the end of February apparently, according to one of the posts Nephrinn made.

Just to let people know, Asagi 2 was finished early this morning and next up is Shion. After that, hopefully it will be MinDead Blood, unless of course more people bid for Taimanin Murasaki :frowning: . Fortunately, MinDead’s currently ahead with $600 while Murasaki is at $530. Just wanted to give people a heads up

It seems this commission system turned out like an auction system in the end. Too bad, really.

Actually it’s because DarkFusion wants MDB so badly. :stuck_out_tongue: According to the FAQ:

1. Once any game reaches $500 in proposed commissions it will be accepted and translation work will begin as soon as the requirement below is met.

However there’s also a side clause that states:

4. If multiple games hit the $500 mark, then the one that has the most proposed commissions will take priority. For simplicity sake, I won’t switch translating between games if it happens another commission I’m not working on happens to get more commissions than the one I am currently working on.

So he’s going to do it. It’s just a matter of when.

Well, don’t get me wrong, Nephrinn can work the way he wants to. I’m not going to pay for his translations, so for me they’re the same as any other fan-translation, and I’ll get them whenever they’re finished. It’s just that I didn’t like the whole pay-for-translate thing from the beginning, and I like it even less now.

Besides, it’s quite funny that complete Taimanin Murasaki translation costs 600$, which is exactly the the current commission mark reached by Mindead Blood. This means that, basically, Taimanin will not be translated before Mindead (unless, of course, there is someome who is willing to overpay the translation to get it done first, but I don’t think that’ll happen). And while this is a good news (I would like to play Mindead, while I don’t give crap about the next mindless big-breasted ninja rapefest), it just doesn’t seem right for the “customers”. I really think he should change that rule, and start translating game in the order they reach the 500$ mark (or whatever the starting mark is for each given game).

hehe, that was me that boosted MinDeaD BlooD up to 600 XD

I’v been really wanting to play it, so i had to put it ahead of the Asagi Spinoff XD

In case anyone’s interested, MinDead and Murasaki are now tied at $600 :expressionless: Not sure how I feel about that…

Make him translate MinDead! Taimanin Murasaki is probably as bad as Taimanin no Asagi 2 (I did play it for an hour and a half before determining this, that it’s the worst eroge i’ve ever played, little my maid is probably better, lol).

I pushed it ahead ( Swiftnissity = Me ).
I’m prepared to go into the high numbers if i really must.
I want to see MDB in English sometime this year ( Estimated translation time is currently at 6 months ).

Ah… I see what you’re saying. I agree with you.

Part of the problem is he doesn’t seem to know exactly how long MDB actually is. But as long as he translates the one with the most funding then I’ll make sure it’s MDB.

Looking at the list of other games he’s translated, I would dare say that MDB would be his largest attempt. Even if you have a walkthru and read without the voices (since people usually read faster than conversation speed), the title takes quite a while to finish. If he’s going to attempt translation by himself, it will take a long time. Moreover since - as I’m told - he’s not fluent in Japanese. MinDeaD likes to gloss over “background fluff” here and there, and throws around some obscure kanji and terms for all the pesudo-history of the BCyc vampire world (more so in the expansion disc). For the record it has thirteen endings. Three of these are canon (since BCyc refuses to reveal which officially happened). The expansion adds another eight endings - one of which (Vampire Road) is an additional canon end.
