Y’know, something’s not quite right when a Russian politician using Japanese honorifics in an English script is regarded as a good thing.
Just sayin’.
It’s all parody anyway so it probably fits right into the script.
If this was a serious political thriller honorifics would be baaad.
Point taken, especially in a world with extraterrestrials, anthropomorphic spaceships, talking pandas (remember, pandas are Chinese), and the brainwashed masses…
Still, I’m more referring to the fact that there’s this knee-jerk reaction among English-speaking otaku regarding localization policies: one where publishers that retain honorifics are revered as gods, and those that leave them out are treated as evil incarnate (even when their omission is entirely justified; see the comments in the Demonbane thread). Yagami has echoed these elitist sentiments on the MangaGamer blog and some of his usual haunts, so I was subtly calling him on it. If a company hopes to expand its market, it needs to stop catering to a niche within a niche (which, I’ll remind you, is a very vocal minority).
On a related note, I’ve recently seen the dubbed versions of Fooly Cooly and Bludgeoning Angel Dokuro-chan. Both titles are great comedies, but the prevalence of honorifics in their dubs holds the shows back from attaining mainstream success. An average kid stops being average when s/he sounds like a yaoi fangirl, and a lot of anime fans don’t take a moment to think about that… The fact that they’re comedies mitigates my criticism somewhat, but I still don’t think that honorifics belong in an English dub (I’m looking at you, Persona - I’ll note that I know quite a few people (non-anime fans) who won’t give the Persona games a chance specifically because of the dubbed honorifics).
Let the record show that I don’t hate honorifics by any means; I just think there’s an appropriate time and a place for them (I’d probably insist on keeping them in a subtitled samurai drama). Since dubs aren’t intended for purists / diehard otaku anyway, I don’t see why some otaku get so up-in-arms about scripts they would never have bothered reading / listening to in the first place. And, of course, I don’t see the point in applauding the preservation of honorifics in a particular English script wherin their omission would make much more logical sense.
Okay, I’m straying off-topic here, so I’ll zip up for now. I don’t want to be part of another flame war, far less start one.
So, all that’s left for me is to wait for the DL version.

Nobody ships expensive, yet compact things - games, jewels, whatever - in clear containers. Certainly not people selling porn. It is a pretty safe bet that most customers are not interested in advertising to the world they’re buying porn. So they usually make sure to ship it in nondescript blank packages.
