Well, that's the thing - to me, visual novels clash way too much with the different types of genre that are present, so there isn't anything I consider ''best-in-class'', except for very vague definitions to keep myself oriented (''Mahou Shoujo'', ''Slice of Life'', ''Romance'', stuff one can easily categorize).
I find a title either interesting, or not.
Reasons for that may vary, because I find several aspects interesting, namely artwork, style, plot, tags (I don't want to play a VN with nice art and/or gameplay just to see decapitation or any other sick shit later on) and background.
(By ''background'', I'm referring to ''nifty observations'' I made. Take ''Fukai ni Nemuru Oujo no Abaddon'' for instance; it has a striking resemblance to Corpse Party, another franchise popular in the west.)
I don't really see a reason in cherry-picking titles; I love Visual Novels in general, if something has a specific theme I like or am curious about, I'm buying and playing it.
I even buy stuff I'm not too interested in at times, just for the sake of contributing my money to something I like. :)
Also, regarding Irotoridori no Sekai, then it IS a good title?
While I don't care the slightest bit about other opinions in regards to VN's (because, it's just like with anime: Find your own stuff you prefer), but I hear them out for reflecting on my own preferences and see what might pique my interest.
Well, even if Fault!! just offers great art, that's not to say that others might see more in the story aspect for example as you do; everything is subjective.
And something without a story can be fun as well, if you are into this kind of stuff.
I prefer simple, more basic stuff that doesn't revolve around a lot of plot twists, for example. :)
It's just sorta interesting to notice the differences between taste.
In its core, you are right about your statement about people probably not caring the slightest bit about Fault!!, if it wasn't for the nice artwork.
Maybe, Mangagamer would be interested in picking it up... they brought out ''worse'' games after all, without wanting to sound mean or anything. :/
Really?
Because somehow, I don't really like the style in France Shoujo, it looks so different. O_o
Well, it's not like I hate it or anything, but I'm not really a fan of the cover, nor the screenshots I've seen there.
Maybe it's simply a character preference?
It does have interesting tags, I like mystery, but the plot doesn't sound intriguing at all to me.
More like something sorta random.
Well, everyone has his own interpretation of things, I will repeat myself here (because I'm very sure I will hear people disagreeing with me here. >_<).
